The small town of Parrish Springs is not ready for Matilda Honeycutt. A strange older woman with scraggly gray hair and jewelry that jangles as she walks, Matilda is certainly not the most likely person to buy the old Barton Building on the town's quaint main street. When it becomes apparent that her new shop doesn't fit the expectations of Parrish Springs residents, a brouhaha erupts. After all, Christmas is approaching, and the last thing the town needs is a junky shop run by someone who looks and acts like a gypsy. But as townsfolk venture into the strange store, they discover that old memories can bring new life and healing.

Once again, Melody Carlson delivers a Christmas story that will touch hearts and delight the senses. Sure to be a classic, The Christmas Shoppe is filled with the special magic the best Christmas stories share--that intangible mixture of nostalgia, joy, and a little bit of magic.

Mary | 7 comments I will be reading this one.

Maria | 131 comments Hope to read this one and join in the discussion. I've only read Christmas at Harrington's by this author and it was lovely. :)

Teya Teya | 39 comments This was an interesting read. I personally expected a romance or whatever, but this was a different take on the Christmas season, forgiveness and peace. I really enjoyed it. Fast read in read it in one day.

I do agree with you. I thought it would be more a romance book too. But I wasn't disappointed at all. The story was more about forgiveness and moving on from a hurtful past. There was a couple of budding romances there. I was quite shocked by the councilmen and I won't say more as it will give it away to those whom haven't read it.

Christine | 455 comments I really enjoyed this book! A storyline that was a real treat!

While it's fresh...

Have you read other Melody Carlson novels? If so, which ones and what's your favorite?

This was my third Melody Carlson novel and my favorite has been Christmas at Harrington's. I've also read The Christmas Joy Ride.

Who do you think Mathilda really was?

I'd say she was an angel and not a real person. I see her similar to Clarence in It's a Wonderful Life. Mathilda came to town to change some hearts and then went off to her next responsibility.

Any favorite characters?

My favorite character was Helen. She cared deeply for Tommy, was organized (a kindred spirit), was protective of her job and town and was open to giving the newcomer a fair chance.

Gabrielle (gabbilupe2012) | 23 comments my favorite character was Suzanna I thought Matilda was an angel too this is my first melody Carlson book, but i own Irish Christmas so I'm going to read that one soon

Beth (canadianbeth) | 103 comments I started and finished this today; it only took me about 2 hours. A very quick and interesting read. I suspect I would need more than one item from Matilda's shop however.

I had not read any of Melody Carlson's books before this one so it was good for my new author challenge. I could not use it for the 50 states one though because no state was given throughout the entire book.

--I have only read Christmas at Harrington's and this one. I definitely liked Christmas at Harrington's better. It was a little less Hallmark-ish and more realistic. This one was cute, but didn't impact me like Harrington's did.

Who do you think Mathilda really was?
--I think she was an angel as well. She knew things that no one else would know and had items that a real person wouldn't have had.

Any favorite characters?
--I liked Helen as well, she was probably my favorite character. She had a lot of spirit. I also thought that the mother-in-law was funny with her prickly attitude.

Gabrielle (gabbilupe2012) | 23 comments yes beth the mother-in-law rose I think had a sassy spicey Mexican attitude. I would have loved to hear about her story or her son's a bit more although it was told by Susanna that he it her.

Becky Neal | 1 comments I read "Here's to Friends" ...it was good...I would recommend...

Kalena (bookt2) | 138 comments This book did not start the way I expected at all! It should be very interesting to see what becomes of this cast of characters.

message 34: by Maria (last edited Dec 18, 2015 06:17AM) (new) - rated it 3 stars

Maria | 131 comments Finished and enjoyed it, though I didn't love it. I like the idea that anything is possible at Christmas and I think that there's some magic during that special season. But somehow I thought this was kind of unlikely.
As for Staci's questions:

-I've only read this one and Christmas at Harrington's, and I liked the latter better. I thought that the plot was believable and I loved the strength of the protagonist.

-I agree with those of you that said Matilda was an angel. It couldn't be otherwise. It's a Christmas story and angels are somewhere on Earth during this time period! :) Plus, she knew so many things.

-Hmm... favourite characters... I liked Helen and Susanna. I liked the way they faced life despite their past. But I also liked reading about the grumpy grandmother. She was amusing! :)

Kalena (bookt2) | 138 comments Have you read other Melody Carlson novels? If so, which ones and what's your favorite?

This is the first book I have read by this author.

Who do you think Mathilda really was?

Due to her special knowledge and possession of things that should have disappeared completely, angel seems like a realistic conclusion.

Any favorite characters?
Megan (reminded me of my youngest daughter) and Rose who I felt transformed the most. I kept hoping for a moment between her and Susannah.

Mary | 7 comments Have you read other Melody Carlson novels? If so, which ones and what's your favorite? The Christmas Dog was the first one I read.

Who do you think Mathilda really was? I think she was an angel as well

Any favorite characters? I really didn't have a favorite. I liked them all even the grumpy old councilmen. lol. They all had their own timing in the book. If I had to chose one it would be Helen. She had a lot to overcome and she did in a big way.

Amber Schamel (amberschamel) | 5 comments I snagged this book for free a while back, and since ya'll were reading it this month, I decided to join in. :)

This is the first book I've ever read by Melody Carlson, and although the book was well written and enjoyable, it was a little weird for me. Matilda was really strange. I suppose she might be an angel, but I'd love to hear the author's perspective on what she intended Matilda to be.

I agree with Gabrielle. I would've liked to learn more about Rose's relationship with Carl, and what she thought of the whole situation between Susanna and him.

My favorite character was Tommy. :) Probably because he was a writer.

Have you ever experienced a "Christmas Shoppe" moment? Where something or someone brings you back to something you've been trying to avoid?

Barb (barbdhf) | 25 comments I hope you're not turned off to Melody Carlson from this book, Amber. I've read many of her books and this is the only one I really didn't like that well. It was just a little too weird for me.

message 39: by Anne (new) - rated it 4 stars

Anne (annest) | 3 comments I finished reading this today, what a lovely story. Some people are sent into our lives to help us see and accept things that we would not usually see. My favourite part is when Tommy comes to realise the true meaning of Christmas again :)

Gabrielle (gabbilupe2012) | 23 comments I'm reading her other book Irish Christmas it's very intense. the christmas shoppe is so much more lighter and more magical if that makes since. she's an author who does seem to have the christmas theme down lol

Amber Schamel (amberschamel) | 5 comments Barb wrote: "I hope you're not turned off to Melody Carlson from this book, Amber. I've read many of her books and this is the only one I really didn't like that well. It was just a little too weird for me."

I understand what you're saying, Barb. I felt the same way. :)
We have a children's Christmas book that she wrote called King of the Stable, and I like to read that one to the kids. I'll try one of her other books. Which one did you like best?

message 42: by Barb (new) - rated it 3 stars

Barb (barbdhf) | 25 comments For Christmas books, I liked The Christmas Pony. For other fiction, I liked her series The Four Lindas, about 4 friends all named Linda.

Hannah (bookwormhannah) | 945 comments Looks like I'm the odd one out on this one. I found it depressing, and the town is definitely not one I'd want to go visit. Everyone was pretty down on each other and Matilda had a tall wall around her own life. And then the theology was off, too.
