I'll be brief -- I'm out of town burying my stepmom today.
As a guy, I have a natural tendency to "fix" things. Sometimes though, all that's needed is a listening ear. It seems like the challenges of this world are overwhelming at times. It's unclear where you're headed, there's no clear direction from God.
That direction you need is in the bible, but understanding requires the Holy Spirit. You can't understand what you're reading without that.
So pray to be filled with the Spirit as you read this month's bible reading.

Sorry about the loss of your stepmom. God speed...

When I read the theme for this week’s devotion I immediately thought of when the Bible talks about faith and works. These two things are very often and mistakenly separated. The Bible clearly states that faith without works is dead, and that we cannot be saved by works but through faith.
Let me expound on that a little more. We are not saved by the things we do, lest any of us should boast that we saved ourselves. We are saved through Christ, and then He gives us the faith to believe in Him. If we were saved by our own faith, we would also have something to boast in, God is the only one who is capable of granting us salvation.
Ephesians 2:8-10 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
However, this is not all there is. Remember that the Bible also says faith without works is dead. If you have faith in Christ but just sit back and let everybody else do the works, then your faith is dead and will not save you. Your words may be stating that you are saved, but your actions also state your true intentions. This reminds me of the saying “Actions speak louder than words.” So just like works alone won’t save you, but faith alone won’t save you, for if it has no works, then it is not the faith given to you by Christ.
James 2:14-18 What doth it profit, my brethren, though a man say he hath faith, and have not works? can faith save him? If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
Let’s remember today that we can’t save ourselves, we are dead in our sins and only Jesus Christ can resurrect us from our state of death. He is in control, not us, but we can learn with His help, to practice our faith with works and do what He has called us to do on this earth. Amen!
