This is a general group. In joining this group you have agreed TO REVIEW ANY ALLOCATED BOOK of under 45,000 words within the set 8 week limit.
If you don’t agree to that tell me now so that I can find another member who will do so.
There is no genre filtering.

If you are only willing to review your own preferred genres then sorry, but you’re better off finding a group that specialises in your preference, or joining one of the 18+ rounds or a ‘clean’ review round. In this general group you might be asked to review fiction/non-fiction, adults’/children’s books, a religious text, BDSM, or anything in between. Allocation is entirely random and there will NOT be any rearranging of the listing to accommodate genre preference. The ONLY circumstance in which you may duck out of giving a review is if YOU provide a stand-in reviewer.

Let’s be honest here – we don’t all like the same things but we all want reviews. Please consider each book as an example of its genre and length. A novella or short story is not going to have the same length/complexity of story/character arc as a full length novel. The only way this group can function is if we trust each other to behave honourably. And it IS perfectly possible to give a fair-minded review of a text that does not coincide with our normal choice of reading matter. If you need a few hints/tips, please see this thread:

Here we go.

START DATE: 18th December 2015

END DATE: 12th February 2016

Round 1 – post your review by 1st Jan 2016
Round 2 – post your review by 15th Jan 2016
Round 3 – post your review by 28th Jan 2016
Round 4 – post your review by 12th Feb 2016

Please remember the commitment you are making to your fellow group members. If you pull out after the start date for any reason it is the other members who will be faced with the problem of finding a replacement, or missing out on reviews, through no fault of their own. Please don’t ask the moderators to chase after replacements as we just don’t have the time.

It is the responsibility of the author to get their book to their reviewer in a format the reviewer can manage. There are no set dates for the start of each round. You can each work at your own pace, within the limits of the round deadlines. All reviews must be posted by 12th February.

When you have posted your reviews, please post the links to your reviews in this thread.

All reviews must be posted to GR, Amazon .com and Amazon.co.uk.

Postings to any other sites are by agreement by both author and reviewer.

If I’ve missed something that results in you being asked to review someone who has already reviewed you, please let me know asap.

To exchange book files, my advice is to use PM to give email addresses to each other (save the chance of spammers getting your addies from this open forum). Happy reviewing, everyone :)

As AUTHORS you send your book file to:

The rules are clear. Everyone needs to be prepared to accept at least a pdf from an author. If they have it, the author can also offer a mobi or epub file.
Authors are NOT REQUIRED to gift their book to reviewers. However, if someone wishes to have a verified review, they may send a gift at their own discretion, or organise an Amazon promotion to coincide with the group, but this is an infrequent occurrence on this group.
It is out of order to insist on such a 'gift' from one of your fellow group members.

message 37: by William (new)

William Peters | 29 comments Emma,

Thanks for the rule clarification. I will abide by the group's rules. However, I would like to point out that 3/4 authors had no problem gifting me a copy of their books. One even offered without me asking. Also, on a book above 2.99 you get 70% of the book's price back in royalties. On a 2.99 book that amounts to a cost of 90 cents. Not exactly something to complain about. Especially when you consider that a positive review is worth alot more than 90 cents, and a redeemed gift counts as a sale in Amazon's system, thus improving your sales rank which will lead to more sales.

Regardless, I will abide by the group's rules and the author can send me a PDF.

Regards,

Will

message 38: by William (new)

William Peters | 29 comments Yes, Carly, I will certainly OFFER the reviewer an Amazon copy of my book.

And until I'm convinced that Amazon is removing reviews of gifted books, I'll distribute my future copies of my low sales rank books this way.

message 39: by William (new)

William Peters | 29 comments Carly: I'm not arguing with Emma or against the group's rules. I just made a clarifying statement. I'll probably just buy a copy of the author's book. That way the author gets a much needed sale, and I get the book in the format I want. I'm not reading a PDF on my phone or carrying around a printed copy of the book.

Also, I recommend that you do as I do and backup all your reviews and review-related email. That way if Amazon removes a review you can restore it by contacting the review author.

message 40: by William (new)

William Peters | 29 comments If a review is removed because it's a review of a gifted book, I will restore it by asking a friend to post it so its under a different name. At this point I have too few reviews and can't afford to lose any due to stupid rules. I haven't had any reviews removed so far. Just curious, why were your reviews removed?

message 41: by Emma, Group Admin (new)

Emma Jaye | 4044 comments Mod
William, I have removed your post about an individual book. I did not mention you specifically in my initial post on purpose.
I will be away from my laptop for most of the day, so everyone, please carry on being thoughtful and polite in your replies.

message 42: by William (new)

William Peters | 29 comments Emma: I appreciate you not mentioning me by name in your initial post. I outed myself because I wanted to make some statements to the group about the practice of gifting a book via Amazon.

message 43: by Cassandra (new)

Cassandra Larsen | 44 comments I'd just like to jump in here for a moment and mention that Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/) is a free e-book converter that you can use to convert Pdf's or any other format into Mobi's or whatever works best for your e-book reader. I use it all the time on review books when an author only has a PDF to give me. I agree with you William that it's difficult to read a PDF on your phone, but if you download Calibre, you can simply convert the PDF into a Mobi file to read on your Kindle. Some formatting issue may crop up during the conversion, but overall it works pretty well. :)

And on the subject of reviews, I've had three removed the moment I linked my Amazon account to my Goodreads account, though I don't know why. I've since unlinked Amazon and Goodreads and haven't had any issues since.

message 44: by William (new)

William Peters | 29 comments Yikes, 3 reviews lost! That's devastating for an indie author. I wasn't planning on linking my Amazon and GR accounts, and I certainly won't now.

I'm hoping that after they link accounts GR offers a new type of book giveaway: one only open to GR users with Amazon purchase histories. A "purchase necessary to enter" type contest.
