Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 979 comments These awards have taken over from the NZ Post Awards (although I note that the Children's Awards haven't found a sponsor & are still in recess. That is very sad.

Here is the Longlist

I think having a longlist is a great idea. Anything that gives publicity to books by Kiwis is a great idea.

I have only read two of the books, both fiction nominees - Chappy by Patricia Grace by Patricia Grace & The Antipodeans by Greg McGee by Greg McGee. Both books have some of the same (for me) faults - too many POV characters & a jumping around timeline, but Chappy is the better written. I can't see The Antipodeans making it to the shortlist & it would have to be a weak field for Chappy to win.

That isn't quite right. The two awards for CYA (NZ Post & LIANZA) have merged. I understood this had become official when they approached me to be one of the judges. It was recognised that by merging the two awards the CYA literature would benefit from having more resource and sponsorship, so creating greater visibility and activity.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂  | 979 comments I'm going by the last paragraph on this link;

That is so cool you were approached to be a judge! I do hope that happens! :)

Not sure that being a judge will happen, but more likely a contributing reader just as I had been with the LIANZA awards.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 979 comments heh! I would love to know what Family First think about the children's awards being sponsored by Hell's Pizza! :D

message 6: by Lesley (new)

Lesley | 1570 comments Well, having lost the last round, they may not have another go! Hell's Pizza has been involved with LIANZA awards for the last couple of years. Because I was a reader we used to get Hell's Pizza luncheon from them! And they've put up a fair bit of sponsorship in the past for various activities to encourage kids reading, and it looks like they are going to add to that in the coming year.

So, not only could it cause a stir being Hell's Pizza but just being Pizza should get the food police involved - won't it?!

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1646 comments Nothing wrong with a pizza made of good pizza bread, covered in tomato puree, a sprinkle of cheese, and nice crunchy veg like peppers, spring onion, celery and more cheese and slices of tomato. A very healthy lunch with a salad and fruit dessert.

And three cheers for you Lesley, you are a super good Beta reader and ought to be well paid for your skills.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 979 comments & the shortlist has been published. I've only read Chappy which I liked rather than loved.

Well, well, well. The Daisley book sounded the most interesting to me.

I've been wondering what this whole Ockham prize was...didn't realise it was basically our country's literary awards with a new name. Did it used to be the post awards or something similar? The winner as well as Witi's memoir sound great.

Thanks for the link Lesley.

I discovered Spinoff yesterday when I read Graham Lay's somewhat ungracious article about Craig Marriner. Loved Braunias's response (although this article has a wee bit too much about the women's dress.)

I love Daisley's quoted remark to his wife!

Putting his book on my to read list.

P.D.R. Lindsay (pdrlindsay) | 1646 comments That's the trouble with the big prizes. The literati want to give it to their own special people. I too liked the sound of Daisley's book.
