Chrissie What book was that? I should make sure to put it on my shelf "not for me".

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments LOL. Dear Russell. How we miss him. ;)

Chrissie Is Russell a guy in a book that you all hated? I am getting more and more curious.

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Chrissie, it was The Problems of Philosophy by Bertrand Russell. It wasn't actually AS bad as it sounds, but yeah, it did hurt.

I think some sought rescue in getting it over with real quick, some may have drowned it in their lavatory cistern. I think towards the end Jean and I were the last ones standing ;)

Chrissie Thanks, Jenny, I don't even have to put that on my "not to read" shelf; I only put there books I might by mistake decide to read. ;0) At least it was short.

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Hee hee - you should have kept Chrissie in suspense a bit longer there, Jenny! And to prove I got through the thing, here's my review of the Bertrand Russell!

Chrissie Wow, you certainly did read that book from start to finish and clearly more than once. You deserve a standing ovation!

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) LOL Chrissie - it is actually considered to be a good analytical philosophical text, but put me off for a few months. Other members in this groups have read two or three more philosophy books since, but I am still licking my wounds!

To bring us back to the subject in hand though, has anyone else watched the old BBC dramatisation of Jude the Obscure from 1971? It must show its age now, but I always have a mental picture of Robert Powell as Jude Fawley.

Gill | 5719 comments The real advantage of reading the Russell book is that it has given me a marker to compare other books to!

Chrissie Don't get me wrong. I find philosophy interesting, but that book is not one I would choose.

Nope, never saw the BBC production. I haven't looked at TV in years.
