with the night falling we are saying thank you
we are stopping on the bridges to bow from the railings
we are running out of the glass rooms
with our mouths full of food to look at the sky
and say thank you
we are standing by the water thanking it
standing by the windows looking out
in our directions

back from a series of hospitals back from a mugging
after funerals we are saying thank you
after the news of the dead
whether or not we knew them we are saying thank you

over telephones we are saying thank you
in doorways and in the backs of cars and in elevators
remembering wars and the police at the door
and the beatings on stairs we are saying thank you
in the banks we are saying thank you
in the faces of the officials and the rich
and of all who will never change
we go on saying thank you thank you

with the animals dying around us
taking our feelings we are saying thank you
with the forests falling faster than the minutes
of our lives we are saying thank you
with the words going out like cells of a brain
with the cities growing over us
we are saying thank you faster and faster
with nobody listening we are saying thank you
thank you we are saying and waving
dark though it is.

Happy Thanksgiving to all the L&G peeps! And W.S. Merwin, too.

Carol | 10390 comments Happy after Thanksgiving Day. Welcome to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. I am not doing that this year. No crowds , no short tempers, and no bad attitudes. I am hibernating until January 1 st.

I have not gone Xmas shopping in a store in the last 10 years.

Ruth, you wouldn't be a muse for Louise Penny would you?

[She features a Canadian poet-laureate of the same name; however, beyond that, the comparison isn't necessarily flattering. For one thing, that Ruth likes ducks ... as pets.] :]

God, grant me the serenity to say thank you to officials and the rich and trumpish.

Sharon (sharonstar) | 3345 comments We have many officials to thank today in Colorado Springs.

Colorado Springs is the birthplace of my son. Colorado College and the U.S. Air Force Academy are located there. It is also the home of numerous right wing / religious groups. It has a picture perfect setting nestled against the front range of the Rocky Mountains.

It is twenty plus years since I've lived near it. I wonder whether the climate of hate against groups such as Planned Parenthood has declined in those years.

Sharon (sharonstar) | 3345 comments It isn't yet known whether the shooter had something against Planned Parenthood or had some other motivation.

There are churches and dentists on every corner here! (scritchin haid)

Where do you live now? Maybe you've said and it disappeared into brain fog. Not in Montana anymore?

I've lived in three front range states: Montana, Colorado and New Mexico, where I spent the most time. Currently, and for as far as I can see into the future, I'll be stuck in rural Massachusetts.

The geography of my heart lies somewhere between the California/Oregon border and an imaginary line that runs up the great plains from Clovis, NM to Havre, MT. With a black hole where Las Vegas is found in this universe.

Sharon (sharonstar) | 3345 comments Do you like rural Mass.? I should think rural anywhere in all the northeastern states would be nice.

Las Vegas isn't my cup of tea either, but the natural areas outlying it are great. Fantastic rock formations and petroglyphs.
