Paul Emily Ryan (kickbackyak) Why do I have the strange sense that some of this is familiar to me Maria...? ;) (It's cool btw, just bear in mind that I haven't read most of these, I've just been riffing off things I have on my Kindle or stuff that's in my library and on my to-read list. When I can find the time though I can point you towards things I like that fit the categories if you want. :)

Oh, and I finished reading Wuthering Heights sometime back... I didn't actually like it that much, though I think that's more my fault than the book's. (view spoiler) For whatever reason the book just never really worked for me, none of the characters managed to properly come to life sufficiently enough for me and they were all horrible or uninteresting, even if it was technically pretty decently written and paced. It's something that I'm willing to come back to though.

Maria (mariah90602) | 1683 comments Omg Paul, I am so sorry! I thought I was just stealing your format. I hadn't realized you had put your own books there. I really was going to let you know but it got crazy at work with a holiday party. I am simply horrified and have deleted your books. Sorry again! But think of it as a form of flattery. :)

In regards to Wuthering Heights, I loved it. But I'm the only one out of my friends. It's an acquired taste. My friends make fun of me and say I like depressing books!

Paul Emily Ryan (kickbackyak) Maria, I saw your apology some time back but I didn't say anything before now because I didn't think I had to say anything. Really though, you've nothing that much to apologise for really! :) I think I'd had the idea already that you'd mostly just borrowed the format off me, as I'd seen that you'd changed some things. And like I either said before or should say, I really don't mind people taking inspiration and things from me (that's how this whole thing works after all right? ;) Honestly I wouldn't mind if people did it more often, which isn't to say that they necessarily should) as long as they let me know when they do.

(Btw, you still have some of my stuff hanging around in your first comment that probably doesn't apply to you if you'd like to take it out, it's everything with square brackets around it and the stuff after "Here are the 25 books". :))

message 7: by Maria (new)

Maria (mariah90602) | 1683 comments OMG, I cannot believe I still had that there. That's what I get for being lazy and copying. I do love some of your ideas, like actually rating each book. Not sure if I'll have time to do it, but I might. Thanks for being so understanding :)

Sure. I think I'll probably have the hardest part with that particular challenge, simply because I usually don't read a lot of non fiction books. Should be interesting.

In case you need help prioritising Maria (feel free to let me know if I'm stepping out of line though, and of course this isn't to say that you'll like something I don't and vice versa):

Books I like:
The Catcher in the Rye
A Game of Thrones
The Grapes of Wrath
Bleak House
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings
The Hunger Games (somewhere between kind of like and like tbh)
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
A Game of Thrones #2
The Woman in White (above kind of like, below like)
Frankenstein
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (I haven't read Through the Looking Glass yet)
Hamlet
Catch-22
The Count of Monte Cristo
The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
The Time Traveler's Wife
Station Eleven
Angela's Ashes
The Colour of Magic (Fair warning though: I think it's great, but a lot of people tend to find this difficult and odd and it's not really like most of the rest of them at all. If you don't mind my saying so, Mort/Wyrd Sisters/Guards! Guards! might be better ones to go with than this. Or you could just ignore me and you might end up having a great time! I just thought that I should mention it regardless. :))
The Ocean at the End of the Lane
A Spool of Blue Thread
Winter (It had its problems I admit, but I think it does ultimately belong here rather than in “kind of like”)
Around the World in 80 Days (Jules Verne)

Books I kind of like:
Agnes Grey
David Copperfield
The Chronicles of Narnia (the quality of the books varies, they fall pretty easy into all three, but in general this is where I am with them)
Oliver Twist (I haven't read it in years though)
A Christmas Carol
A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe

Books I didn't really like:
Crime and Punishment (there are things to like about it to be fair, there just weren't enough of them for me)
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (it's not terrible, mind, I just felt something missing)
The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

Thank you so much Paul. I see you like mostly everything on my list. I will probably start with that and work my way down.

Maria (mariah90602) | 1683 comments Goal 2 of 2
Monthly Challenge for January

EXTREMES CHALLENGE
Duration: January 1 - January 31, 2016

So January’s theme is extremes, here are some topics to explore:

1. The Weather can get pretty extreme in January...either really cold in the Northern Hemisphere or really hot in the Southern Hemisphere. Read a book that has an extreme weather event or a book that takes place during a hot hot summer or cold cold winter.

2. There are some extreme environments, and people love to explore them. Read a book about someone surviving in the wild outdoors or a book where someone travels to an extreme location (like outer space). Winter (they traveled to the moon) 1/1/16

3. Extreme sports have become very popular over the years, so much so that some are in the Olympics! Read a book about an Olympic athlete or someone who went to extremes to play the sport they love.

4. Going with the sports theme, there is not sport more extreme and possibly dangerous than Martial Arts if not practiced correctly. Read a book about someone who participates in Martial Arts, or about someone who ends up in a very dangerous position.

5. Unfortunately, even with modern day science, extreme mental illness still disables millions. Read a book about someone who suffers from an extreme mental illness like bipolar or schizophrenia, or a book about a tragedy caused by someone with an extreme mental illness like suicide or mass shooter. Luckiest Girl Alive 1/2/16

6. The media is dominated by news of those who practice extreme versions of their religions, if you could even call it following a religion. Read a book about a cult, or read a book about someone who is (was) a religious extremist.

7. Nationalism is often a good thing even if it’s extreme, just ask the founding fathers of a nation, but it can also lead to some serious conflicts like WWI. Read a book about the founding of a nation, or read a book about how extreme nationalism destroyed a nation.

8. Mathematics often talks about reaching extremes, but only the truly dedicated to the practice ever get to understand why math has such extremes. Read a book about a mathematician or read a book about a dedicated intellectual.

Duration: January 1 - January 31, 2016

Let's start the New Year off running! How many of us have a New Year's Resolution to read more books? How many of us set goals higher that we did last year? This is not a sprint, but a way to spend January in the pages! Pick the number of pages or books you would like to read in January and post them below. The goal is to get the New Year started fast! Who would have thought, with the snow coming, that you could do a marathon in January?

Spring Cleaning for the Soul
Duration: April 1, 2016 to April 30, 2016

During spring time so many of us set out to clean our houses from top to bottom, but wouldn’t it be nice to also declutter our lives as well?

For April, instead of the usual challenge to read books specific to the theme, we thought we would look inward instead of out. Let’s read some books that clean up our souls and minds.

- Read a book that inspires you, spiritually or emotionally.

When I'm Gone by Emily Bleeker An inspirational story about a woman who dies of cancer but leaves letters for her husband to find after her death.

1. Read a book with the word “Earth” is in the title. Journey to the center of the Earth?

2. Read a book where the book's environment plays a major role in the story, like the heat and humidity of the Caribbean or the harsh winters of Scandinavia.

3. Read a science fiction or dystopian book about an affected environment.

4. Read a book that takes place in an untamed or remote part of the earth (like Greenland, small islands in the ocean, the Amazon, the Himalayas).

5. Read a book about one of the world’s harshest environments (like the Sahara Desert, Australian Outback, Siberia, Antarctica).

6. Read a book that explores the effects of climate change.

7. Read a science book about the earth or some aspect of the earth – geology, oceans, atmosphere, climate, etc.

8. Read a book about how the environment and animals interact.

9. Read a biography/autobiography/memoir of a person that has been active in protection the environment.
