Elizabeth: (view spoiler)[Poor Lizzy! It is just like her to realize that she is falling in love with Darcy because she thinks he doesn’t want her anymore. And of course she doesn’t consider the fact that Darcy’s sister had almost the exact same interactions with Wickham that Lydia did. Why would Darcy look down on Lizzy for experiencing a similar misfortune.

I love how she always expects the worst of him and he shatters those expectations every time.

Jane: (view spoiler)[I still like her, but I don’t find her desire, to see the good in everyone, as endearing as I used to. I know it’s her character, but she sets herself up for a lot of heartache and disappointment that way. Lizzy is a cynic so when things don’t turn out badly, she is pleasantly surprised, but when things do go wrong, she is also better prepared for it. (At least that’s the way I see it as a fellow cynic. lol)

Lydia and Wickham: (view spoiler)[Why do you think he ran away with her? Was it just to have some fun? Seems like a lot more trouble for him than it was worth. Lydia makes sense because she is easily swayed by pretty words, but Wickham is too calculating to run off with her just to have a little fun.

Mrs. Bennet: (view spoiler)[I am convinced this woman is the comic relief in this book. How can she always play the victim while simultaneously being better than everyone? It’s like an artform for her. First she blames everyone but herself and Lydia for Lydia’s bad behavior, then she decides her husband must die fighting the dastardly Wickham, and then she starts complaining that the Colinses are going to throw them out as soon as Mr. Bennet dies.

Oh! And what about that part where she keeps prattling on and on about her spasms and Lydia’s wedding cloths?! First of all lady, Lydia shouldn’t be getting a dime from you for clothes or anything else because of the huge mess she caused, and second of all, NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR SPASMS!

I promise, that is my last rant about Mrs. Bennet, but if she isn’t making me laugh, she’s making me angry.

Chapter 46-end

Darcy: (view spoiler)[ Why does he go to see Elizabeth when she gets the letter from Jane? I don’t think Austen explains but curious whether I missed it or it explains it somewhere.

When he happens to see her so depressed you see a very loving side to him though Elizabeth thinks the opposite but we see that from the beginning he was trying to formulate a plan to make sure she doesn’t suffer. (hide spoiler)]

Mr. Bingley (view spoiler)[It’s really weird that even until the end he needed “permission” from Darcy. I know Elizabethe loves her sister and all but I feel like she's doing her a disservice by letting her know how easily influenced Bingley is. I would have told my friend not marry him because it's really not okay. I do like him telling Mrs. Bennett whether they had any other lanes that Darcy and Elizabeth could get lost in. Elizabeth (view spoiler)[I like how she is actually thinking about her feelings and doesn't think that she is in love instantly after seeing him being nice. And her whole he loves me, he loves me not back and forth shows you a different side of her. Because we usually see her so confident and trusting of her own judgement. But at this point she knows she’s been very wrong about two particular people. (hide spoiler)]

Mrs. Bennett (view spoiler)[ Her behavior when her daughter runs away and then later when she shows up is just the worst. Especially, since she doesn’t do anything to help or comfort her family and is the one to blame for the way Lydia acts.

Love the interaction between Kitty and Mrs. Bennett when Bingley comes and she’s winking at Kitty. Mrs. Bennett's reaction to Jane getting engaged (She became her favorite child) and Elizabeth getting engaged is just funny.

And she obviously has some affection for Elizabeth because she apologizes to her when she has to hang out with Darcy for two days in a row. (hide spoiler)]

Lydia and Wickham (view spoiler)[ Lydia can be forgiven a little because she is a kid but Wickham (almost thirty) what a horrible person. Takes a child away with him and they are obviously shacked up together and then he has the nerve to come back to their house and pretend nothing crazy happened. Just normal marriage and all. I mean that takes some nerve. And when he talks to Elizabeth (again like he did not run away with Lydia) and tries to complain about Darcy I was like OMGGG shut up please. (hide spoiler)]

Mrs. Phillips: Bearer of bad news. She’s such a background character but she just not a good person. Though she is the aunt I feel like she gossips and spreads rumors about her own family.

Lady Lucas: Well all I can say is that she and Mr. Collins are definitely cut from the same cloth.

Collins: (view spoiler)[ At this point he’s really just the most malicious character in this novel. The letter he sends them when they are so depressed about Lydia and how happy he is that he was not married into the family was just such a horrible thing to do. But then the second letter telling them that she can’t or shouldn't marry Mr. Darcy was just ughhh. (hide spoiler)]

Mr. Bennet: (view spoiler)[I was wondering while reading this whether the reason that Mr. Bennett and Mr. Collins Sr. did not get along was due to the fact that Mr. Bennett makes many sarcastic remarks at the expense of others and he just did not like to be ridiculed, whereas Mr. Collins himself is just too dumb to pick up on it.

His reaction to Jane when she gets engaged and when Elizabeth gets engaged really does show his preference. But I like that he makes sure that she really likes him and respects him though i did not like the part about him being “superior” to her but I guess that was then. And some of my favorite lines from him

“No" said her father "Wickham's a fool if he takes her with a farthing less than ten thousand pounds. I should be sorry to think so ill of him in the very beginning of our relationship.”

He simpers and smirks and makes love to us all. I am prodigiously proud of him. I defy even Sir William Lucas himself to produce a more valuable son in law."

Mr. and Mrs. Gardiner: (view spoiler)[Seem to be the only ones in this whole book that know how to act and judge people properly. Except for Darcy and Wickham. And I blame that on the family and friends because they did not meet them just had second hand accounts from everyone else. (hide spoiler)]

Elizabeth: YES!!! exactly. Though I think its because he already thinks bad about her family. But this is the one instance where he could not say anything since his sister almost made the same mistake.

Jane: I still love her :( sorry will have to disagree on this point. I think she is such a lovely and sweet person. Though you are right that she sets up herself for disappointment she still doesn't let it bring her down.

And as for being a cynic. I totally am too. But when the worst thing I can think of happens I am still surprised and can't believe (My cousin says I am a pessimistic idealist ...... I am not sure how haha)

Wickham:(view spoiler)[ I think he knew the girls' financial situations so he definitely was not in it for money. But because of who they were and that they lived in the country and not London I think he was just using her for fun. They don't know anyone powerful enough or skillful enough to find him and make him marry Lydia. The dad is barely in the girls lives and the mother is well Mrs. Bennett. I have no doubt that if Darcy did not find him he would have left Lydia and just moved on with life. And she could never have. But why he did not just go to London and hook up with a girl there is beyond me. But it does make you think that maybe (and I have always thought this) that was in part trying to get back at Elizabeth a little. Because at this point he doesn't know that Darcy is in love with Elizabeth or that she is falling in love with him but when he does try to hit on her after Ms. King courtship fell through that probably hurt his pride. And in the letter that Darcy gives to Elizabeth he says that he feels part of the reason that he wanted to get with Ms. Darcy was to get revenge on Darcy for denying him more money. So he is definitely vindictive. But it could also be that she was available and open to the idea. It is Lydia. (hide spoiler)]

Mrs. Bennett: Isn't that the best part of her character. That she is somehow "psychic" and knew everything that was going to happen but somehow is always the victim and surprised by it.

Wedding clothes and the factories and yada yada. I was pretty surprised how fast she ignored the situation she was in before finding out that they would be married. (hide spoiler)]

Yeah I agree. I think living with her would never be funny but always irritating.

Jane: Oh, don't be sorry for disagreeing, Jane is so sweet and likable. To be honest, I admire people like her because they are strong enough to expect the best knowing they could be disappointed. :)

Mr. Collins: (view spoiler)[Well, if anyone wanted to know what kind of man Collins was, the letter he sent to Mr. Bennet would sum him up in a nutshell. How petty and nasty can one person be! Not sure if Charlotte is going to have the comfortable life with him that she thought. He is a nasty little man. (hide spoiler)]

She is so selfish that instead of sparing a moment of gratitude for her brother who she thought paid Wickham to marry her daughter, she decides he owed her that because if he didn’t have a family all of his money would have been hers anyway. Did I read that passage right? I must have fallen asleep and dreamed it because there is no way one woman can be this annoyingly selfish. And is she actually proud of Lydia for running off with some guy and causing all of this trouble because it means Lydia will be married at 16? Boy, that is one crazy dream I must of had. Jane Austen was a talented author and everything, but no one is creative enough to write a character like Mrs. Bennet. (hide spoiler)]

Elizabeth: (view spoiler)[Aw, I loved the scene where Lizzy finally decides she likes Darcy and starts dreaming about what a great couple they would have been. It was such a natural and relatable scene. And her regrets are adorable because we already know how wrong she is about the way Darcy feels. This scene also highlights just how beautiful Darcy’s love for her is. She is sure he couldn’t still love her because of the way she turned him down and how distasteful her family is, but as we know, he is growing to love her more. I’m so glad I read this again!

I could feel her frustration when Darcy and bingley came to visit Longbourn, and it was so cute. You would think that she knew him well enough by now to know that he is quiet when he is uncomfortable. It’s clear to everyone but Elizabeth how much this man adores her and her ignorance makes the romance so interesting and fun.

She is so good at seeing how much Bingley cares for Jane with the little things he does, but she is oblivious to how much Darcy cares for her, and that is so true to life. You can always tell when someone likes someone else, but when it involves you personally, you don’t have a clue and question every little thing. (at least that’s the way I am). (hide spoiler)]

Lydia: (view spoiler)[Do you think Lydia is really as ignorant and silly as she seems to be or is she just pretending not to know what an awful thing she did by running away with Wickham? I mean it’s possible she would rather pretend she did nothing wrong because letting in the guilt would be too painful (People do that all the time.), but I think she is really that naive. And if she really is that naive, I “almost” feel sorry for her. The thing that keeps me from actually feeling sorry for her is how cruel she is. The first thing she did was insult Jane and try to make the rest of her sisters envious. Can’t feel bad for such a mean person. (hide spoiler)]

Mrs. Gardiner’s letter: (view spoiler)[Yet another wonderful letter! I didn’t remember how charming and informative the letters in this book were, but every single one furthers the plot in such a lovely way. If I didn’t already love Darcy, this letter would have done it. Seeing him through Mrs. Gardiner’s eyes was so sweet. He was shy and dashing all at the same time. And this letter also increased my fondness for lizzy’s aunt. I love the way she playfully teases her about Darcy’s obvious affections and slowly but clearly hints that Lizzy needs to do something about it. (hide spoiler)]

Wickham: The only thing else I am going to say about him is “YUCK!”.

Jane: (view spoiler)[I give her a hard time but she really is a lovely person. I was so happy for her when Bingley finally proposed. I’m also glad Bingley seems to have taken a liking to Lizzy. The part when Mr. Bennet says, “You are each of you so complying, that nothing will ever be resolved on; so easy, that every servant will cheat you; and so generous, that you will always exceed your income.” is absolutely true. Both Jane and Bingley are too sweet for this world, and I’m glad they have Lizzy and Darcy to protect and love them so they can keep being that sweet. I can imagine the four of them living very happy lives together. (hide spoiler)]

Lady Catherine: (view spoiler)[I could go on and on about what an awful snob she is, but I’d rather talk about what she brought out in Elizabeth. Even though I’ve read this before and watched at least three adaptations, I didn’t remember the events of chapter 56. I don’t know why I didn’t remember them because they cemented Lizzy as one of my all time favorite heroines! How many times have I read a book or watch a TV show/movie where the heroine doesn’t stand up for herself in the face of a rich bully. And the last place I expected to see a woman so eloquently stand up for herself was in a Victorian novel. Bravo Lizzy! This was a time when a title and money meant everything, but that still wasn’t enough to make Lizzy accept disrespect and ill treatment. Gotta love that! (hide spoiler)]

Elizabeth and Darcy: (view spoiler)[They took the long way around to get there, but they are an adorable couple. I could go on and on about chapter 58 and the pretty things they said to each other, but the moment that stood out to me the most was when Lizzy stopped herself from teasing him about his influence over Bingley because “He had yet to learn to be laughed at, and it was rather too early to begin.”. That showed how well she already knew him and how thoughtfully she was approaching their relationship.

Favorite quotes: “Darcy was not of a disposition in which happiness overflows in mirth; and Elizabeth, agitated and confused, rather “knew” that she was happy than “felt” herself to be so…” This pretty much sums up Lizzy and Darcy as a couple. He feels things on a deep level but refuses to let it rise to the surface and be expressed, and she spends so much time dissecting things in her mind she doesn’t get to enjoy her own feelings. lol

Lizzy responding to Jane saying Lizzy dislikes Darcy: “Perhaps I did not always love him so well as I do now. But in such cases as these, a good memory is unpardonable. This is the last time I shall ever remember it myself” This is the most strangely romantic thing to say. (hide spoiler)]

Final thoughts: (view spoiler)[I had the biggest smile on my face the entire time I read the last 3 chapters, and now my cheeks hurt. Every time Lizzy told a family member about loving Darcy, I swooned at her open affections for him and laughed at their reactions. The way both Jane and Lizzy’s father wanted to know if she was sure about Darcy before they would accept him was so loving (of course her mother only thought about the ten thousand pounds a year), and it was so sweet how they befriended him as soon as they were assured of her love. This has got to be one of the happiest endings to any book I’ve read because you can just feel the love that everyone has for each other, and you know they will live very rich and joy filled lives together. I think he just really really trust Darcy. And I felt a little better about him when Darcy said that Bingley was angry when he found out him hiding the fact that Jane was in town.

I also think Jane would have done the same thing if Elizabeth had told her Bingley didn't have feelings for her.

At least this is what I had to tell myself in order to forgive him for being so easily convinced. lol (hide spoiler)]

I think Charlotte will be fine. She seems like she's a person that can tune someone out completely.

Mrs. Bennett: Yup you read that right. And this is a women that does not like entails because it takes money away from her children but is ok with other peoples kids being deprived!

Elizabeth: Its a super cute love story. And its soooo true. I can always tell when other people are flirting or into each other but not when it involves me!

Lydia: Yeah I think she is just dumb sixteen year old who things she got a catch. Everyone is into him and only she got him. And none of the crazy stuff comes out until after she has run off with him. And then to come back home and your mom is so excited for you!! Well I don't know about you but I think any 16 year old would think they did the right thing. I really do think she is a copy of her mother. Who is also selfish and naive.

Gardiner's are the best in this novel.

Lizzie: Yes!!! she was great on that point! And I hope you don't mind me correcting you but this is not a Victorian novel .. which is something I found out two weeks ago!!

Ending: This is one of the better endings in her books too. I think you said you have not read the other books so I won't spoil them but a couple of endings were just annoying.

I imagine the 1995 version of Mr. Bennett. He was just so likable and lovely. And I personally like Mr. Bennett. I just wish he was more involved.

And final thoughts:

1. I heard on a podcast that they thought Charlotte's character was gay?? Do you see that? I just see her as a person, in today's society, who just doesn't want the family life and its ok. Not that she can't be presented in that way in modern adaptations I'm just saying I don't actually see her being like that.

2. Another discussion I usually see is Darcy on a spectrum of autism. I also don't see that. I just see him as a person that might be socially awkward or socially uncomfortable.

3. Elizabeth hating women: Elizabeth dislikes certain women. I can see that. But they are so awful that you can't blame her. But I was listening to podcast (maybe the same one maybe another one who knows!! I listen to a lot) says that she seems to only like girl characters are submissive and fit the vision of "what women should behave like for that period. And how much more harsh she is to Charlotte when she marries for money but not on Wickham when he pursues a girl... Here I can see it a little but again not really. I mean Charlotte marries a crazy and a complete jerk for financial stability. And the girl wickham pursues we don't know much about.

See, on all three of those points I feel like they are viewing it from a "present day" lens instead of considering the times.

1. I think it's a little condescending to label Charlotte as gay just because she takes a pragmatic approach to marriage. Why does she have to be anything other than a woman who knew what she wanted out of marriage and went for it. And I agree with your earlier point that she may actually be happy with Collins because she is good at tuning people out. They may actually be a good, if not perfect, match for each other.

2.Again with the labeling. I know that is something people love to do, but some times people are just people and they have strengths and weaknesses when it comes to interacting with others. I'm not saying he was or wasn't on the spectrum, but without the author expressing that, I don't think he needs a label.

3. I also thought Lizzy was harder on Charlotte than she was on Wickham, but I thought that was because she knew and loved Charlotte so she had higher expectations of her than some guy she just met. Plus she was enamored with Wickham and that clouded her judgement.
And once again with the labeling. Why does she have to be a "woman hater" just because she likes being around a certain type of woman. People like who they like, dang! Lol

Now, thanks to you (and Google), I know it was a Georgian novel. Or at least it was set in the Georgian period. :)

3. Thats a good point too! She is closer to Charlotte but I think she also know Collins better too and realizes hes annoying!

I don't really mind it if someone takes a work and then adapts and interprets it in whatever way they want. I feel like there is just enough evidence for them to interpret it that way if they wanted too. But I don't see how they can be certain that its what was going on. And the author is dead so you can't ask her. You can't say it with 100% certainty. And I think that's what bothers me the most when people think their viewpoint is correct.

Anyway i love this story and I feel like every time I have read I've learned something new and every time I seem to learn something new from the book. I had no idea it was Georgian Novel!! So now I know that. Haha. I just knew that it wasn't Victorian!
