haha no God no! This is like the millionth time. I just thought it would be fun if I read with other people. I was in the another group and a girl wanted a Buddy to read it with and it had a been a while since she posted so I just volunteered because I would never say no. And then decided it would be more interesting to see whether other people would like to read it on this group.

I used to think that re-reading books was dumb and a waste of time. But past couple of years I tend to back to books I liked a lot and read them again. And each time you read them you find something new or depending on where you are in life they mean something different or you connect to them a different way.

Still not much of a fan of re-reading books but I have certain exceptions and this is one of them!

Really enjoying reading this with the benefit of knowing what’s going to happen already. I rarely reread books and have never reread a classic, and this is inspiring me to do that more often. It just feels easier to understand all of the witty conversations without also having to commit to memory who everyone is. The first time I read it it took me a few chapters to remember simple things like who was Jane and who was Elizabeth so I kept getting confused.

Yes, Mr. Darcy was a prideful jerk to everyone at the party, but what I find interesting is how his pridefulness brings out the pride in everyone else. Like when Mrs, Bennett and Mrs. Lucas were complaining that Mr. Darcy barely spoke to Mrs. Long even though he sat next to her, they used that as an excuse to discuss the fact that she didn’t own a carriage. Mr. Darcy was rude, but they were nice to her face while gossiping behind her back. Both prideful in different ways.

I like Jane, but she is a little vapid when compared to Lizzie, and that’s a nice contrast. Lizzie can come off as harsh and Jane can be too soft so It’s nice that they have each other for balance.

I feel like the relationship between Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy is the same. All four of them seem to appreciate traits other’s possess that they lack.

And Mr. Bennett is still my favorite character. I don’t like that he favors Lizzie, but I understand it. He is so sarcastic and that sarcasm is not appreciated by any family member besides her. She is just a safe place for him to be himself.

Mrs. Bennett is shallow. But as shallow as she is, she seems to fiercely love her entire family.

I had forgotten how well this book dissects so many different personalities. And each personality is given enough time to shine. I don't like everyone, but I feel like I know what drives them because so much time is put into them. It's also nice to get to know all of these different people from the perspective of others.

Minor spoiler for ending: (view spoiler)[Especially when you know how wrong some people are in their observations. My favorite thing about this book is how wrong both Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy are about each other's motivations and feelings. Cute and infuriating! (hide spoiler)]

do you only re-read the books that make you happy or do you re-read some of the dramatic and emotional books too? I have been considering re-reading Crime and Punishment or Jane Eyre for a few years, but they are so emotional I don't know if I want to go through all that again. lol

ooo I would do crime and punishment again. I re-read things I feel like I would enjoy (that be dramatic and emotional) as long as I liked and ones that I feel like i would gain from. I've read both of these actually and had them both to re-read. So i am totally down to reading them again. Though I liked both books when I read them, months after I had read Jane Eyre I started to be a little weary of the story.

Maybe we could do a Crime and Punishment re-read someday? I think I would need a buddy or two in order to get the most out of it. So draining in a good way.

That is so funny! I had a similar experience with Pride and Prejudice as you did with Jane Eyre. Only, I was so weary with it while I was reading, but then I kept thinking about it off and on for months later. The more I thought, the more I loved.

I am like that with all books. I remember reading a book (don't remember which one) but the book was from the first person perspective and half way through they mention a persons name and I'm like who is this person??? and it was the main character .... oops. haha

Response to spoilers (view spoiler)[Well I think the pride theme comes up a lot but also the hypocrisy that goes with it. Like taking the Bingley sisters for an example, they are very protective of the place in society they have because of their wealth and are constantly putting the Bennets down not acknowledging that society actually holds the Bennets in higher standing because they come from a line of gentlemen and have an estate, while the Bingleys came from trade and have no estate (apparently having one is very important in order to be taken seriously). And then there is a part where they are talking about Sir Lucas and how he probably had a shop somewhere before he was knighted and technically their family did the same.

honestly this is going to sound bad but my favorite part of this book is all the different ways the women spread news and while complimenting someone also putting them down. Takes some skill but also a lack of self awareness to pull that off.

I love Mr. Bennett too. I just tend to see the point they are making now. But his sarcasm and his humor in the most absurd things that go on his house you have to appreciate. (hide spoiler)]

Elizabeth. I never noticed how much modern romantic comedies resemble the formula in Pride and Prejudice, and it's a formula I like. Not only is Mr. Darcy falling first, Elizabeth is completely oblivious to his feelings. And of course her indifference is only making him like her more.

The inclusion of Miss Bingley and her petty competition for Mr. Darcy's affections is a great contrast to Elizabeth's indifference.

And unfortunately one of my least favorites characters just showed up. If Mr. Collins isn't the quintessential sleazy snob, I don't know who is.

And about the romance formula. Yes I have noticed that a lot too. I never realized that (view spoiler)[you've got mail was based on this book until recently. And its one of favorite movies. Also I saw (can't remember where) a category for romance where MCs do not like each other in the beginning. So there is a whole subcategory for this type of romance. Put this in the spoiler so people don't get a hint of what is to come

And that's a good point actually on Miss Bingley and the contrast to Elizabeth. I guess it might be different for Darcy to find someone who couldn't care less about him

Mr. Collins (view spoiler)[ I get that he really loves his "boss" but wow this guy is just obsessed with her. It always surprises me just how much he brings her up. And when he acts like a complete moron at the ball ... ugghhh You just want to lock him in a closet until the end of the party. Like stop being such a kiss ass. Though I have to say this is probably one of Austen's best characters. Because I feel most people try to avoid people like this in real life because they can be embarrassing but in this book there is no escaping him.

And he is so obvious with this motive towards the Bennett's that its insulting. Now thinking about the proposal I would be so insulted, if someone came up to me and was like you obviously will marry me because what better choice do you have. No one else will want to marry you. He purposely targeted someone that he knew (or thought he knew) would be in such a position in life that she could not say no. Like why would you want to be with someone like that. And also aren't you putting yourself down by thinking only a person with no options would marry you. (hide spoiler)]

Mrs. Phillips (view spoiler)[The only sister for Mrs. Bennet and its interesting how much she is like Mrs. Bennet. (hide spoiler)]

Wickham (view spoiler)[Never noticed this the first time I read this book but its funny to me that he talks about not telling anyone about how horrible Darcy is because the love he had for Mr. Darcy's father and then goes around and tells everyone how horrible Darcy is. And no one even notices how hypocritical he is. (hide spoiler)]

Caroline (view spoiler)[ If I couldn't stand her before this, now shes just the worst. (hide spoiler)]

Elizabeth (view spoiler)[ Usually a really good judge of character but I think we are starting to see how much her own emotions are clouding her judgement. And the thing that I admire the most about Elizabeth is that nothing keeps her upset. She talks herself out of it.

Two things that Elizabeth says and does that endear her to me more ... and probably makes me a horrible person:

1. when her friend Charlotte tells her that she might actually enjoy the dance. and She says that's the worst punishment any one could have is to like someone you are determined to hate. (But even though this a joke there is a grain of truth to it. She is determined to hate him and won't look at any evidence that he might actually be a good person).

2. And ignoring Darcy during the dance but thinking actually if I talk more than he might get super annoyed so i'll talk. (hide spoiler)]

Darcy (view spoiler)[ So Elizabeth is rude and calls him out on his behavior sarcastically and he totally picks up on it but instead of blaming her or himself for the way he is acting, he blames Wickham. You would think he would be more bitter towards her for not understanding him and in his own words purposely misunderstanding those around her but he isn't. (hide spoiler)]

Mrs. Bennett (view spoiler)[God!!! this lady. Just wow! It's like the more they try to get her under control the crazier she gets. And the last line in chapter 18 is that Elizabeth is her least favorite daughter. I wonder if this because she is Mr. Bennetts favorite or because she is the child that is very different than herself. (hide spoiler)]

Mr. Bennett: He's like the ultimate sociologist but with an appreciation for the absurd.

Miss Lucas: (view spoiler)[I'm just not sure how I feel about her. She was there scheming to get Mr. Collins toward herself and away from the Bennett family. And that just seems crazy that she would do that to her friend. I do understand that Elizabeth did not want anything to do with him but to willfully lie to your friend and get this guy to propose to you just sounds wrong. And how awkward is it for your friend that the guy that proposes to her then proposes to you two days afterwards. (hide spoiler)]

Mrs. Lucas(view spoiler)[Honestly what a horrible person. To come over and start to calculate when someone will most likely die so you can have a house ... Ewww! But also to go and rub it in that her daughter is married. Its wrong. I understand that Mrs. Bennett is not any better but to go about doing something you hate yourself is stupid. (hide spoiler)]

Some of my favorite lines:

"Very true, indeed; and now, my dear Jane, what have you go to to say on behalf of the interested people who have probably been concerned in the business? Do clear them too, or we shall be obliged to think ill of somebody." -- This line I think really explains Jane and how she just can't comprehend that there is evil in the world and that anyone could purposely do something that is wrong.

"Laugh as much as you chose, but you will not laugh me out of my opinion." -- I have heard this line so many times in so many different ways and never realized it was from this book.

"My dear, do not give way to such gloomy thoughts. Let us hope for better things. Let us flatter ourselves that I may be the survivor" -- Classic Mr. Bennett

Okay, getting in some reading today, and I need to vent about Elizabeth for a minute.

Elizabeth:(view spoiler)[It's interesting that Elizabeth refuses to believe Mr. Bingley when he says Mr. Darcy has good reason to dislike Mr. Wickham because Mr. Bingley only heard Mr. Darcy's side of the story, but she has only heard Mr. Wickham's side. And she barely knows Mr. Wickham!

I know Darcy was rude to her so it is easy to believe the worst of him, but this is the first time I have really seen Elizabeth as prejudice. And she is not just prejudice when it comes to Darcy. She really believes she can figure people out by simply observing them for a short time.

Her character is very interesting to me because I know I can be the same at times. It's a good reminder that what you observe can often be just a fraction of the truth or not true at all.

Mrs. Bennett:(view spoiler)[Oh how this vapid woman gets on my nerves!! How anyone can be that unashamedly shallow, I don't know. I tried to be easy on her with her blatant favoritism of Jane, but I can't do it anymore. Having a favorite child is bad enough, but this woman actually ranks them all and Elizabeth is last!

Not to mention the fact that all of her silly, snobbish remarks at Mr. Bingley's ball couldn't have made any of her daughters look good. Any man who likes them would have to like them in spite of their mother, that's for sure.

Well when you reading the story I feel like the reason none of her girls are married at this point is because of her. I mean at this time Jane will have to be 23 or 22. And she's smart, pretty and super sweet. There's no way she would not have attracted someone by now. Its got to be the mother that scares people away. (hide spoiler)]

She knows exactly who Mr. Collins is, doesn't like him, but decides to marry him because she believes it's the best offer she can get. I don't know too much about the Regency period, but I'm sure it was a time when more women made decisions about marriage the way Charlotte did. It gives me more appreciation for the fact that both Jane and Elizabeth want to marry for love and not comfort.
However, I also have respect for Charlotte's resignation to what she will need to accept in order to live a comfortable life. At least she doesn't romanticize Collins or believe he truly loves her.

Ok I will get some reading done as well.

I've read all her novels but not any of the unfinished one or short stories. My least favorite is Mansfield Park and not a big fan of Emma (even though the movie Clueless was based off Emma). To me these two novels did not have any likable characters. But Second favorite was persuasion. Just thinking about it right not makes me want to read it :)

Charlotte: Good point on that. Though I honestly would rather be alone then be annoyed I don't think that was an option back in the day unless you had money.

Jane: OMG soooo true. I actually laughed out loud when I read that. Only difference is, is that we would be reading directly from the guy.

Charlotte: I did think less of her after what she did, and I thought it was smart of Elizabeth to think less of her too. It was mature of her to still be Charlotte's friend, but keep her at a distance.

Darcy: Okay, this is one of my quirks, but I think it is adorable the way Darcy blamed Wickham instead of Elizabeth and sees some of her faults as virtues. It's mostly cute because he is such a stuffy and cautious person, but he seems to appreciate how kind Mr. Bingley is and how unselfconscious Elizabeth is. Makes me respect and like him more. I also love the way he tried to ignore her and just eneded up thinking about her and watching her anyway. Lol (hide spoiler)]

Yep, I love heroes like Darcy. Dont know if you've read North and South, but the hero in that book reminded me a little of Darcy. That is by no means a romantic book, but I did enjoy what little romance it had.

haha ... I was actually thinking about this book this morning. And I was like i should mention this to you but the I totally forgot. And yes I have read it and the romance is very much alike. I think it might have been based off P&P but I am not sure. Have you seen the BBC Show of the book?

Yes, I have seen it and loved it! Felt so much more romantic because they couldn't put all the details from the book in it.

Love how the hero basically tells the heroine he is going to keep loving her even if she doesn't love him back because he likes who he is when he loves her. It made his love for her seem healthy instead of desperate.

Mr. Bingley: oook so this was in interesting. Because I have never thought of him that way. But its a perfect description because Mr. Darcy says that Bingley easily falls into and out of love. I guess because of the negative connotation that we have for playboy that word never even crossed my mind. But dang you're right.

Mr Darcy: Yeah and I got to imagine that being surrounded by a bunch of people you don't know can be intimating especially if they all know each other. And I can understand that because most people think I'm a snob for the same reason. But I think the part that makes him super rude and obnoxious is the fact that he calls her out on her looks and social status. It doesn't matter what the situation you are just mean.

You're right! She has been directly or indirectly responsible for some of the best scenes in the book. Sending Jane to get sick gave us some great scenes with Elizabeth and Darcy, (view spoiler)[acting like a nut at the ball is probably why Bingly left town, and she convinced Mr. Collins that Elizabeth really didn't want to marry him (hide spoiler)]. I don't like the woman, but she does keep things interesting. Lol
