How informed are you on the current Japan-China discord? How informed are you about the rising nationalism in Japan? How about the increasing fervor in Japan to re-militarize?

In Thursday, February 27, 2014 The Wall Street Journal, these questions are posed in an article titled “Tension in Asia Stokes Nationalism in Japan.”

The last paragraph in the article quotes a Japanese politician as saying, “The era when the U.S. was a superpower has ended. We need to protect ourselves.” When asked how he thought Japan should do that, he answered, “Nuclear armaments.”

That follows a previous article in The Wall Street Journal May 2, 2013. “Japan Nuclear Plan Draws U.S. Ire.” From the article: “Japan is preparing to start up a massive nuclear-fuel reprocessing plant over the objections of the administration…The Rokkasho reprocessing facility is capable of producing nine tons of weapons-usable plutonium annually, enough to build 2000 bombs.”

With the U.S. adamantly opposing nuclear armaments in Iran and North Korea, if Japan did follow through with plans to make nuclear weapons, the U.S. would surely demand Japan cease and desist.

What would Japan do to thwart the U.S.’ demands?
