I have read Pride and Prejudice (and Wuthering Heights) although it was only in high school and not my cup of tea. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, however...

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments My copy used to belong to my mother. Sort of inherited when we cleaned out the house after my father passed away (my mother was already deceased). Forget now why I kept the book as it really isn't my type of book either. The Zombie one doesn't interest me too, but then I am tired of people thinking that the way Zombies were portrayed in that movie is the way they have to be done, which is totally not the way they are in actual voodoo.

Hi all,
My name's Pat and I'm a bookaholic. I'm also a writer, my first two indie novels (Perigee and Farside) were recently picked up by Baen.
Some of my current favorite authors are James S.A. Corey (all both of 'em), Douglas Preston, and Neal Stephenson. Major influences on my own writing are Tom Clancy, Michael Crichton, Stephen Baxter, and Pat Conroy.
Musically I'm into blues (mostly Texas style) and occasionally play guitar. When writing I find that movie soundtracks get my brain going.
Just finished Karl Gallagher's Torchship and really enjoyed it, right up there with The Expanse series.

Lizzie | 303 comments I got sidetracked by Jim and John - I always spelled it dilemna and never knew it was wrong until their posts. I had to confirm it was wrong so then was reading on the phenomenon as to the why it happened (someone traced it to the NE and the early 1900s). I grew up and attended school in NJ, starting kindergarten in 1964.

Tom Krug (thomas_krug) | 24 comments Hey guys, I'm Tom. I'm a newcomer to writing Sci Fi and honestly I'm pretty conflicted about whether my first novel technically qualifies as a Space Opera. But, you seem like great people, so I thought what the hell, let's give this a try.

My favorite book at the moment is Old Man's War by John Scalzi. Favorite movie is either Shawshank or Gravity (because I'm a sucker for redemption themes), while for TV series, I always seem to find my way back to Battlestar Galactica. I tend to jam out to instrumental bluegrass because I grew up hearing my dad's bagpipes, and I got weirdly fond of the chord progressions. I'm an Army veteran, and my experiences tend to inform a lot of my writing. Hence why I can't figure out what genre my book is.

Anyway, really glad to be here, and looking forward to hanging out!

message 1270: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (shadowjack) | 3 comments Hello. I am Andrew. Which is, oddly enough, the name of a children's book.
Favorite Books: Tough one. Anything by Gordon Dickson or Harry Harrison. I wish I could find all of the Lockridge mysteries for less than a couple of hundred dollars each. "Doc" Smith or George O. Smith. I don't think I have a favorite, I am more like an English Setter Oh look, another book! (Setters prefer birds.)
Favorite Genres: Hard Sci-Fi, classic mysteries
Favorite TV shows: Game of Thrones? Blacklist? Maybe Diners, Drive-ins and Dives
Favorite Movies: No questions here. The best movie ever is The Bicycle Thief
Favorite Food:If I am ever wrongfully accused of murder and wind up on death row, I am going to eat all the raw oysters I can get. (Heck, they'll probably let me go rather than pay for my last meal—either way, I win.) Otherwise, both my wife and I are excellent cooks and most meals are excellent.
Day Job: Working on that.
Hobbies: Sailing, fitness, reading, playing with computers.
Other: How nice to find a bunch of people who share at least one of my, umm, idiosyncrasies. This is going to be fun.

Before we can give you good choices, it would be nice to know what it was that turned you on in Dune. Was it the sweep of history, the royalty conflict, the mental powers, the harshness of the planet's ecology? Something else? With those clues, others can probably do a better job of picking other series for your consideration.

It's the lead-in book to the series and is pretty good.

Now, back to your problem: Something by Asimov??? It seems to me that he had a detective, Elijah Baley, who was teamed up with R. Daneel Olivaw (the robot).

- The Caves of Steel
- The Naked Sun
- short story "Mirror Image"
- The Robots of Dawn

My mother (and my father, to a lesser extent) are big fans of Dune. In fact, they wanted me to read it when I was still in middle school. I couldn't make it. I eventually read it after high school and enjoyed it.

I like it because of the scope and the intrigue.

Anna Erishkigal (annaerishkigal) The original DUNE novel is awesome. The rest of them? They're okay. I enjoyed them when I read them, but they didn't have the same cutting-edge impact that the first one had.

Excellent detective trope, but that's not the one I have in mind. This was a male-female professional pairing. In one of them, while tracking down stolen art or something they discovered a star that had disappeared was really the blast from a hypernova coming right at a planet. Gah! I can remember the story, but not the author or the name!

To me all of what you listed and the author's ability to intertwine those aspects together with a political / government based on fiefdoms, is what made Dune so enticing and raised Dine to a literary masterpiece when I read it at age 17 in the mid70s. Any of the aspects you mentioned would have made it an interesting story but the combination wowed me.

You might enjoy James Blish's Cities in Flight and F.M. Busby"s Rissa series if you haven't read them before. I think they were published in the 80s.

message 1300: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments The stories that formed Cities in Flight were actually written in the 1950s. There have been several collections since.
