message 1101: by Maren Eliason (new)

Maren Eliason Hello all! New here. Not new to Sci-Fi/Fantasy at all, but just recently tore through the Mandrake Company series by Ruby Lionsdrake and decided I needed more Sci-Fi romance. Those have sex scenes, be warned if you don't like that. I don't usually care for that -- in the Eve Dallas books I always skip over those -- but for some reason I don't mind them in Lionsdrake.

I live in Oklahoma, much like Nebraska with similar "settler" preconceived notions from people. I don't ride a horse *or* a covered wagon to town. I actually live in a college town of about 120,000.

Name: Maren
Favorite Books: Harry Potter, Rowling's (Galbraith's) Cormoran Strike books, all of Robin Hobb's books, all of Lindsay Buroker's books (EMPEROR'S EDGE especially), Patrick Rothfuss's two, Kevin Hearne's Iron Druid series, Scott Lynch's Gentleman Bastard series, so much more.
Favorite Genres: fantasy
Favorite TV shows: of all time? STTNG currently? Survivor
Favorite Movies: I don't really like movies
Favorite Food: chocolate
Day Job: English teacher, mom & wife
Hobbies: teaching Zumba
Other: ?

Abby (dildev) Hello everyone!

Name: Abby

Favorite Books: It's hard to pick favorites, but these are ones that definitely made an impact on me: Shadow of Intent by Joseph Staten, The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell, the Imperial Radch Trilogy by Ann Leckie, Starship Troopers by Robert A. Heinlein, and The Flood by William C. Deitz.

Favorite Genres: If I'm not consuming some form of science fiction, I'm usually reading/watching some period piece.

Favorite TV shows: Man in High Castle, the A&E Pride and Prejudice miniseries, Agent Carter

Favorite Movies: Lord of the Rings, District 9, the Captain America films, Hunt for Red October, 'Great Performances' version of Macbeth

Day Job: Currently training student workers at an academic library, but also job hunting as my position ends when I wave goodbye to grad school

Hobbies: I blog about video games and science fiction, research random topics

Other: I firmly believe we need more giant spiders as actual characters.

Welcome Maren! You made me giggle. We have some great sci-fi romance writers in the community and maintain a Listopia if you want to find some more. Also, one of this month's group reads dances along that line:https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

Welcome Abby! You'll find lots of great recommendations here for space opera. Also, we have a fledgling little gaming section. As long as it's space opera related and not self-promotional, you can post a theoretical gaming discussion topic up in Member Discussions and then, once it winds down, I'll move it down to our Gaming section so casual browsers can find it.

I know I am getting old when of all those books and authors you mentioned Heinlein is the only one I recognize (and the book is the only one I have read),

To be fair, two of those are tie-ins to a video game series so they're rather niche.

Hey! Nice to meet you Abby!
There's a lot of fun and intelligent discussion around here and on the site in general - I'm sure you'll get a kick out of it.

Where do you write about scifi? Do you review it here?

And regarding giant spiders - well so long as you mean intelligent spiders and not just big creepies, then yes, that is something to experiment with!

You might want to check out a comic series called Wayward. It is quite special and fun and the most recently concluded story arc brought in mystical spiders, 8-legged arachnids who walk and talk and plot and go to war - might be right up your alley! :)
Cheers!

Yeah, I know that feeling - been making a concerted effort to read some relatively more current stuff recently, both scifi and otherwise.

Welcome Brian! Of all the authors to have read, Asimov is a good one to have under your belt. He was my gateway author for scifi too. See you on the discussion boards!

I'm still trying to get into the habit of posting reviews here, but a link to my blog is on my profile, which, in turn, links out to all the places I've posted.

And I'll definitely look into Wayward! Thanks for the recommendation!

message 1121: by Monika (new)

Monika Kelemen | 34 comments Hi everyone. I just found the goodreads community a few days ago, and when I saw this group, I knew I was home :). I thought I'd say hi and introduce myself a bit.
Name: Monika
I'm a stay at home mom to two small children, so I don't get to read nearly as much as I'd like. I usually have a hardcopy (ideally paperback) in progress that I take places and I read ebooks on my phone while getting the kids to nap/bed and in the middle of the night. I take a couple of months usually to finish a book because I can't devote much uninterrupted time to reading and my attention is always divided.
Favorite Books: The Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy series, Gateway, Ringworld, anything by Terry Pratchett or Peter F Hamilton, the Foundation novels. the Hyperion series... I'm sure I'm forgetting some. I just started reading Leviathan Wakes and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.
Favorite Genres: I enjoy most science fiction, but space opera is definitely my wheelhouse.
Favorite TV shows: Doctor Who, Star Trek (TNG is my favourite), Firefly
Favorite Movies: Star Wars, the Matrix, Spaceballs ;)
Favorite Food: chinese takeout
Hobbies: sewing, painting, gardening (ask me how often I get to any of these lol)

I used to be mostly a library and thrift store reader, but recently I decided that books will be my one indulgence and actually bought a couple of new paperbacks. Reading on my phone is fine and all but I feel strongly about having my kids see me read paper books and enjoying them to hopefully raise a couple of voracious little readers :)

I look forward to getting to know all of you

Can sympathize with the kids bit as I have four myself ages 5 to 12. The oldest is a voracious reader and can easily read the same book over and over again. The two youngest like books/reading as well so it will be interesting to see how that goes. Myself I prefer actual books while my wife likes her ereader (a Kobo). Welcome to our group and hopefully the stay will be a long one,

Welcome Maren,

I'm new myself. I totally understand about preconceived notions about the Midwest. I'm originally from California, but live in Maryland now. However, I spent two years in Oklahoma (courtesy of the Navy - go figure). OKC has more colleges and cultural things to do than I would have believed possible before living there. Windy though, real windy!

Found Lindsay Buroker's stories about 2 or 3 years ago and fell in love with them. Another author I've been following in the past few years is Michelle Sagara and her "Cast" books. They are fun to read fantasy. The main character seems to be perpetually in trouble.

I'm the author of YA sci-fi, "Mystical Aria: Seeking the Gallion Queen," about a 12-year old psychic girl who connects with good aliens who want to visit her, but the military sends her SEAL father to capture the Gallions or destroy their superspaceship. It's a first-contact, girl's version of "ET."

message 1133: by Heather (last edited Apr 14, 2016 12:21PM) (new)

Heather (bruyere) Hi everyone. I believe I am a space opera fan and joined this group hoping for some good recommendations/ group reads. I love discussions! My favorite space opera was Hyperion series and Dune. I seem to like sci-fi with philosophical elements most notably. Not fond of only military battle types. I really have a hard time tolerating lame prose or stock/cliche characters.

I work in a graduate school in California, mostly doing assessment. I'm from Wisconsin originally.

I read a combination of canon literature, sci-fi, fantasy, and dystopia. I have been reading older sci-fi the last four years. Not sure I like very much of it, but I keep trying...

Currently enjoying on tv: Killjoys, The 100, iZombie, The Expanse, Hemlock Grove, Haven. I'm a big X-files and Star Trek fan as well.

Hi Heather, nice to meet you, and also cool to see another person mention liking Hyperion (and I read your review of it -- thank you for not including a bunch of spoilers!). That book keeps getting higher and higher on my to-read list. I read The Terror, and it's easily one of the top three most well-written novels I've come across in the past decade, if not longer... so I know the author can write. I might just decide to read Hyperion next :-) So thanks in advance for reminding me about it / reasserting it in my consciousness!

Incidentally, my dad's from Wiscaaaaansin. :-p

Heather (bruyere) John - If you're really curious, check out my shelf "vintage sci-fi." I like Asimov, Clarke, Burroughs, Niven, Zelazny, Priest, to name a few.

Gains - Definitely check out Hyperion. The first one is fairly literary, but if that's not your thing, don't worry as the next three are less so.

Heather you might like to try Poul Anderson. If you enjoy Burroughs you could try Otis Adlebert Kline who wrote similiar material. A couple of other names that come to mind are Edmond Hamilton and Jack Williamson. I have shelves for Anderson, Hamilton, Williamson and Burroughs. My author shelves are at the top of my list.

message 1146: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments With the exception of Burroughs who dates from an earlier age they all started their careers at the same time as Asimov (give or take a few years). Their are a few other SF authors there as well, but Hans Kung and Pierre Teilhard deChardin are most assuredly not SF. The other problem is that I have had to get rid of books due to moves a couple of times, so the shelves are a bit sparser than they should be.
