Welcome Jim. It's nice to have someone of my generation, though there seem to be quite a few of us oldsters here.

Welcome Jim! I like unicorns, wizards and faeries, but I like my spaceships more (and if you can combine them, even better!) Which is why I'm a space opera lover :-)

Leonie (leonierogers) | 342 comments Hi Steve! I've also enjoyed the Battlestar Galactica reboot, and the prequel, which was sadly cut short - Caprica.

Najaf Naqvi (najafnaqvi) | 15 comments Hi, I am Najaf from Lahore and I live and breath space operas. My favorite sf book is Hyperion. I am currently reading Aurora and I am always on the look out for a strong captivating space opera.

i hope to make good friends here and get some decent recs.

Alan (alanb24) | 34 comments My attempt at trying to follow the guidelines:

Name: Alan Blank

Favorite Books: Barrayar, Foundation, Ender's Game, Starship Troopers, Shoeless Joe and way too many that I'm not recalling. I began reading science fiction as a kid with the Tom Swift Jr. and Dig Allen Space Explorer books.

Favorite Genre: Science Fiction, especially space opera, mystery, historical fiction, light fantasy, thrillers.

Favorite television shows: Current-Supernatural, Agent Carter, Luther, Sherlock, SH.I.EL.D. (I probably should be watching the Expanse). Old: Star Trek TOS and DS9, Battlestar Galactica (Edward James Olmos rules). Firefly, Hill Street Blues, Justified and The Shield. I'll try almost any science fiction show at least once, no matter bad it is.

Favorite movies: New-Star Wars The Force Awakens (we just saw it last weekend). Old-Star Wars (original), Casablanca, Adventures of Robin Hood, Forbidden Planet, Doc Savage, Buckaroo Banzai and whole lot more.

Favorite Food-doesn't chocolate and coffee count as food groups?

Day job: I have one.

2016 books I'm looking forward too: Gentlemen Jole and the Red Queen (Bujold); The Twice and Future Cesar (Meluch) The End of All Things (Scalzi) and the final Temeraire book. Unless I find this at the library then it will probably be 2017 until I read these as I wait for the paperback.

message 859: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments I read the Tom Swift, Jr as well, probably started in grade 5 or 6 but the Dig Allen are new to me. I also have some of the earlier Tom Swift books as well as a couple of Tom Corbetts.

message 860: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanb24) | 34 comments I can't believe that I forgot the Tom Corbett books. I discovered those at the library because of my older brother.

Ye elder brother used me as his cover for meeting his girlfriend at the library. So he would make our parents happy by taking me, and I had run of the place.

Besides the Tom Corbett books I found an old hardcover Hawk Carse pulp adventure.

message 861: by Jason (new)

Jason Braida | 51 comments I devoured Tom Swift Jr when I was growing up. Still have some of them kicking around the house or at my parents' house. They were a great intro to science fiction.

message 862: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanb24) | 34 comments I had to move 4 months ago, and part of the process was clearing out a storage unit that I was renting.

The Tom Swift Jr. survived a massive purge. Unfortunately most of my hard copy comics are gone.

Actually a Mack Reynolds Star Trek YA and the two book YA series Space Eagle also made it to my new home.

message 863: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments I have most of the Tom Swift, Jr books. My original copies did not move out here with me but I was able to purchase almost the entire run. Missing only a couple I think. I also have a couple of the earlier Tom Swift series as well as some of the later incarnations, including two which team up Jr with the Hardy Boys. As I said I have a couple of the Corbetts and there may be some other stuff. Have to look at my shelf of such fiction some day and take inventory.

message 866: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Scott I also liked the Rick Brant book series (along with Tom Corbett and Tow Swift, Jr.) It wasn't SO much science fiction but science and adventure, yes. When the Jonny Quest TV series came along, I always thought I detected a LOT of resemblance to the basics of the Rick Brant books, although the main character was younger in the TV show.

message 867: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanb24) | 34 comments Many years ago I got my daughter to watch some original Johnny Quest episodes because she had seen some of the remake shows at her father's one weekend. she much preferred the original series.

Then I corrupted her with Firefly, The Trouble with Tribbles and Warren Ellis.

I found a pdf copy of one the Rick Brant books and it is my TBR folder. Along those same lines did you, or anyone else here remember the Winston science fiction books-Winston was the publisher and there were no series characters. I have three of them, two of which were read to the kid as she was growing up.

Jeez-this just made me remember Asimov's Lucky Starr books. What can I say? I read a lot of bad space opera (Perry Rhodan, Cap Kennedy, and Doc Bones) growing up.

message 868: by C. John (last edited Jan 08, 2016 10:58AM) (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Man I love the Perry Rhodan books. I have all the Ace paperbacks and five of the first six from the successor publisher, as well as one of four from a much later publisher. I wish I had learned German to be able to read some of the later ones. When I was the University of Toronto (Wycliffe College) I found a bookstore that had tons of the German Perry Rhodans. Only problem was they weren't in any order. I am currently re-reading what I have and I am on book 7. Cap Kennedy I have seen but never read any of them and the Doc Bones are new to me.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments On the matter of Jonny Quest my kids like both the original series and The Real Adventures series but haven't seen any of the episodes from the 1980s revival. I've also seen both animated movies. Does anyone know if the live action film has been released.

I'm probably being a little unfair in regards to Perry Rhodan. I liked the early books, and the first ones with Atlan as the main character. As the books got to around the late 90s early 100s in English I felt the quality was really lacking.

Cap Kennedy, despite apparently being written by the well regarded E.C. Tubb, struck me as a knock-off of Edmond Hamilton's Captain Future stories (Hamilton is one of my big guilty pleasures). Doc Bones was sort of a mix of Captain Future with some Lucky Starr (best one sentence description I can come up with)

message 872: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments I have read a few of the Captain Future stories when they were reprinted in paperback some years past and have even watched quite a few of the animated series episodes (but in French a language I don't understand for the most part). I saw the Lucky Starr's in paperback but never read them for one reason or another.

message 873: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanb24) | 34 comments If you liked the Captain Future stories I feel comfortable recommending The Best of Edmond Hamilton and his Starwolf trilogy.

message 874: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Have the best of Edmond Hamilton and I had at least one of the Starwolf books. The former survived the move out west the latter didn't. Hamilton just happens to be one of my favourite SF writers. Of course I am also a fan of his stories for The Legion of Super-Heroes in Adventure Comics in the early to mid sixties.

I think you would like Hamilton's work on Superman 2965 later retconned to Superman 2465. He also had an essay, which I loved, in weird Heroes Volume 6.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Are those the stories set in the future with the villain Muto. They were good. They are collected in the volume Superman Past and Future which my library has a copy of. Hmm, if we keep this conversation going I am going to forget if I am on my Space Opera forum or my DC Comics forum.

message 877: by Alan (new)

Alan (alanb24) | 34 comments Sorry about the digression.

Yep those are the stories I was referencing. Hamilton is among the writers I sort of fanboy about at times.

message 878: by Veronica (new)

Veronica Scott I LOVED the Starwolf books! Some of the first science fiction I ever read. My Dad was a total SF fan and had a huge library of the old paperbacks. Lensmen series as well...

Don't worry about the digression. I use to post on a forum site that sadly no longer exists. It was often amazing the twists and turns a thread could take.

And if you're a Star Trek / Star Wars fan, you are definitely in the right place!

West Coast Eagles. I live on the west coast of Canada and we have eagles here so it sort of made sense. Don't get to see the game anymore (mainly because we chopped the cord to cut costs) but I still like the game. Much better than the NFL or the CFL.

Go the Dockers? I originally came from WA, but now reside in NSW, where people tend to call Rugby League 'football' despite rarely touching the ball with their feet...

J. | 5 comments Hi all, my name is Josh, it's nice to meet you guys.

Favorite Books: Probably The Wind-Up Girl and American Gods, but as far as Space Opera stuff goes, I've been enjoying The Expanse books. The comic book series Saga is also incredible, one of my favorites.

Favorite Genres: Anything sci-fi or fantasy, but I particularly like space opera and cyberpunk.

Favorite TV shows: Firefly, Cowboy Bebop, True Detective (season one), Justified...I currently watch most of the superhero shows, most of the new Syfy shows (now that they're actually good again), and really anything with some supernatural element. Also several procedurals because I'm a sucker for those things.

Favorite Movies: Stars Wars (Episode IV is probably my favorite, but I acknowledge that V is undoubtedly the best of all the films) and Brick (yay for Rian Johnson directing future SW films). The Princess Bride and The Fifth Element are also up there, you know, because.

Favorite Food: Things made from potatoes

Day Job: Freelance writer and aspiring author

Hobbies: I game a lot, mostly League of Legends recently. I also love Mass Effect, and I'm super excited for the next game at the end of this year. I enjoy watching various sports-ball games (and some e-sports) as well.

Deb Omnivorous Reader | 41 comments Hi all, pleased to meet you!

I stumbled across this group while I was looking for a Marine group, but I read sci-fi more often than Marine-sci, so I guess that works.

So introducing myself off the recommended list: You can see my name.

Favorite Books and Genres: Waaaay too many to list, but relevant to this group...
For Space Opera I really can't go past Tanya Huff's Valor series.

In classic sci-fi, last year I started obsessively collecting and re-reading E C Tubb's Dumarest series. How obscure is that?

For cyberpunk: If there were nominations for godhood I would put forward William Gibson.

Favorite TV shows: While I sometimes watch stuff online I don't have a Teeve. What's the point anyway, when they canned Firefly?

Favorite Movies: Many, often sci-fi. GATTACA would be probably my all time favorite.

Day Job: I pretend to be a scientist in a Histology Laboratory.

Other stuff, yoga and sword fighting and diving and reading. Mostly, a lot of reading.

On groups I mostly lurk and I vanish for long periods of time when reading consumes me.

Welcome Jon! I went 8 years with no television, then I got married and watched for a couple of years, but then they killed the Stargate, so I've been pretty much boycotting it ever since. I -do- binge-watch entire series from time to time, Battlestar Galactica, Walking Dead, whatnot.

Deborah wrote: "I stumbled across this group while I was looking for a Marine group, but I read sci-fi more often than Marine-sci, so I guess that works..."

Welcome Deborah! Would that be marine biology sci-fi? Or space marines? Both are cool! The movie Leviathan (1989 version) comes to mind. I live near the Woods Hole Research Center and sometimes attend their Oceans Alive seminars (or whatever they call it ... the sponsor changes every couple of years and they change the name).

message 898: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Deborah I did a compare books with your shelves. I think you are the first person I have done that with that has read any of the Dr. Syn books. Have you ever seen the version Disney did back in the sixties with "No. 6" [mind has gone blank on actor's name] in the lead role. It was done as a three parter for the televison show but it was released as a movie in non-US markets. It uses the third book as its basis as I recall. Hope you enjoy are rather eclectic group.

Mathew J | 4 comments Hello everyone,

My name is Mathew Workman and I am a big fan of space opera and hard military SF. The first opera I ever read was "Bio Of a Space Tyrant by Piers Anthony" and I discovered that one by accident. A few years later and I found the Baen free library and I didn't see daylight for a few months. It was there that I first encountered my favorite author David Weber. I am here in SOF to find like-minded readers and new SF authors, to expand my horizons, and to have lively discussions about the science of the future.
