Looking at your television list and see that you list Space: Above and Beyond and Quantum Leap as golden oldies. Now I feel old. Think I shall go and download a Limeliters album from freegal (while listening to disco on my iTunes library). But welcome to the asylum. The inmates are running the place right now.

Other: I've been a sci-fi reader for over 50 years and enjoyed many writers over the years. In the recent past a friend got me started in military sci-fi, and I haven't looked back. Weber, Campbell, Douglas, to name a few authors. Presently reading the Void trilogy by Hamilton

message 715: by Brad (new)

Brad Cash | 24 comments I have read, and like, probably 30 Honorverse books. I am having a hard time finding anything as good. I've tried Cherryh, Reynolds,Flynn. They weren't interesting to me. I do like David Weber's "partners" Flint and Zahn. And the Safehold series. I am trying the Kris Longknife series. So far so good. If I can't find something good to read I might have to start all over with the Honor books. Any ideas on a new series to try?

My hobbies include reading, gaming (tabletop not video) I love punk/alternative music as well. Have two german sheppherds who are my "kids". Favorite book....hard to say. In this genre probably Dune or The Artifact. I am new to goodreads (actually joined years ago but just started to actually use the site). Thanks for having this group as space opera is one of my favorite genres.

I didn't think anyone played table top games anymore. What type do you play? I have quite a few and my son is interested in trying out some of my conflict simulations/wargames.

message 718: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi, my name is David Collins-Rivera. I'm a writer, podcaster, and voice actor. I've visited Goodreads for a few years now, off and on, but I never seemed to have anything to say, so didn't participated very much. That hasn't changed really, but Space Opera is my favorite SF sub-genre, so here I am anyway.

Favorite Books: Wuthering Heights (more so as a teen), 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, War Of The Worlds, Treasure Island, pretty much all of Burroughs' Mars and Pellucidar series, Rendezvous With Rama, Ringworld, Downbelow Station (big time)...gee, the list goes on.

Favorite Genres: Space Opera, Victorian Romance and Adventure, Super-hero stuff, Fantasy

Favorite TV shows: Millennium (very uneven, but when it was good, it was great), Real Humans (the Swedish version of the show), Firefly, the BSG reboot, Blake's 7, Thunderbirds, The Prisoner, Star Trek TOS, The Bridge (Broen/Bron -- the joint Danish/Swedish detective series), Wolfblood, Alice (a Brazilian drama series), Barney Miller...many more.

Favorite Movies: Citizen Kane, Night Of The Hunter, 2001: A Space Odyssey, French Connection, Soylent Green, Solaris (both the 1972 and 2002 versions), Star Wars (4,5,6), Apocalypse Now, Godfather, Star Trek movies Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country, Radar Men From The Moon (the whole serial), Predestination...way more.

Favorite Food: Indian, Italian, Mexican, Thai, some Japanese, my own special rice omelet (though no one else in the house likes it).

Day Job: Stay-at-home dad to my homeschooled autistic son.

Hobbies: I guess it's writing/podcasting/voice acting, since it hasn't become my career yet.

Other: I don't like traveling, and do what I can to avoid it.

Welcome Lucas!

I'm a big Chutes and Ladders guy, my 6 year old loves the game. :)

I remember playing Axis and Allies and Castle Risk with friends during high school, on the nights we didn't play D&D. We didn't play Risk, and thank God too, because I suck at that game.

R. Michael Litchfield (rmichaellitchfield) | 28 comments Couple of people have mentioned safehold, and since it's technically space opera (even though it is really alternate universe napoleanic/civil war) and since I just finished re-reading it in preparation of the release of _Hells Foundations Quiver_ in October I thought I'd babble about it.

It's another huge series by Weber, very different in setting than his Honorverse books, but similar tone and style. If you hated the info dumps and wordiness of Harringtonland this is even worse.

One of the things about the series is how many characters it has, seriously. He has a dramatist personae you need just to keep track (even though he kills em off as fast as George RR Martin with a toothache) that runs to over 65! Pages in the most recent ones. And, to make matters worse one of his conceits is a degenerated orthography so all the names are spelled weird: Clynthan for Clinton, Nahrman for Norman, Wylsynn for Wilson.

If you like Webber it's great, if not it is horrible.

message 726: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments That is a good one. I should have no problem getting my 5 & 7 year old daughters into SF as The Backyardigans series has had several episodes that were science fiction oriented. Come to think of it they both love Transformers and Star Wars so what convincing do I need to do. (They have 11 and 10 year old brothers)

Jolie Mason | 6 comments Hi,
I am a goodreads author who writes in this genre, in the interest of full disclosure here. Well, let's see. I'm still waiting for my second season of Firefly. That's what got me started. Right now, I'm reading Ruby Lionsdrake, but I think I'm about to run out of books there.

Just realized this entire post sounds like space opera anonymous. I don't play favorites with food. I love them all equally. Okay, not ALL, but most. I'm willing to try anything that isn't bizarre once.

Mostly, I love to write. It's like breathing, and I know that sounds pretentious. I can disappear into my writing for hours. I only recently decided it was time to actually try to sell some of it. I hate the time selling takes away from it actually. However, I find I'm reading more, making time to read even. I'd fallen off a bit. (realize when I say fallen off I mean down to like one book a month. I can read a couple a week on a bender. lol)

Good to meet everyone.

David | 5 comments Hello my name is David and I'm a space opera junkie. In my youth my parents allowed me unrestricted access to TV (all 4 channels) I started with Star Trek and progressed to Space 1999. When I could not get a fix I found myself hanging out at the library. Through the years since then and the advent of the internet my addiction has only grown. I'm hoping to gain support from this group with my addiction.
Thank you.

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Ah yes, the days when there was ABC, CBS, NBC & PBS in the US and CBC & CTV here in Canada, plus the odd independent in both countries and various provincial channels. Now one can't even begin to count the number of networks/channels available.

I feel the same way about writing. Not only do I love it, but it's also therapeutic. My general anxiety flares up when I don't write any fiction during any given day, and when I do write my anxiety vanishes.

After I post the above I think to check iTunes and there it is. I suspect the last time I looked I typed in John Barry not Barry Gray. I am forever confusing those two. Anyway for the musically inclined there is a lot of Barry Gray material available there. Added stuff to my wishlist.
