Anastasia (anastasiiabatyr) Hi there!

I'm Anastasia, and I'm not very good at introducing myself ;)

Favorite Books: most of the novels by Zelazny, Sheckley, some Simak and Asprin.. Culture series by Iain M. Banks has been one of the latest discoveries.
Favorite Genres: I guess I'm not too picky and ready to give anything a try, if the mood is right that is:) So.. history, scandi crime novels, noir, sci fi (bet you didn't see that one coming :) )
Favorite TV shows: Don't think I've got the right attention span for a tv show.. I watch the first few episodes, I love it, and then I never finish one.
Favorite Movies: Blade Runner, Moon 2112, Stoker, Taxi Driver, Night on Earth...
Favorite Food: spicy
Day Job: finance
Hobbies: history of arts, coding, learning languages and random stuff

Pleased to meet you all. Do you, by any chance, know who can recommend a good book around here? ;)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments Of course nowadays after the first few episodes a show might not be around any more. At least when I was a wee laddie shows used to last for at least half a season (16 episodes).

As for a good book here are some suggestions
SF: The Skylark of Space, Too Many Magicians (also a good mystery and a good fantasy), The Time Stream
Mysteries; The Nine Tailors (my absolute favourite mystery)

Sometimes, it's just the other way round: you see something and wonder how (and why) on Earth it's still airing

message 654: by C. John (new)

C. John Kerry (cjkerry) | 621 comments That is true. Of course the show I wonder how it is lasting so long is the show you are avidly watching every week.

Jonathan Bergeron (scifi_jon) | 370 comments Welcome Anastasia! I'm not Big TV fan either, but I do recommend Daredevil. The writing in that show is the best in any tv show.

Definitely better than that overrated Game of Thrones.

Gil (gnakonechny93) | 4 comments Hey guys!

I'm Gil. I've always been a reader unfortunately lately I've been so busy that I haven't had much time to do so. I want to change that, though.

I've been using GoodReads for a while but have never joined any of the groups so I thought I'd give it a chance. I do love books of any and all genres. I never really had a favorite genre. I just read everything that comes my way but lately I have been really, really liking Sci-Fi. Especially ones where there are other planets, other species, inter-planetary governments, etc.

I've been working on the Ender Quintet and I really do like it. And yes, I read Ender's Game much before the movie came out. I thought that was so random! I read the first, Enders Game, Speaker for the Dead, and just finished Xenocide. I just started Children of the Mind. I'm not planning on reading Ender in Exile so I need to start working on finding another book!

Brings me to my question..

Does anyone know or can suggest any books similair to the Ender Quintet? Such as other plants being inhabited, other sentient species, multi-species clashes, etc. I really like this series and want another like it.

If anyone knows of any that I might enjoy I would really, really love any suggestions!

Thanks guys and I'm glad to be here!
Hope to hear from you guys soon!

message 663: by Link (new)

Link Parish (linkparish) | 8 comments 'Lo all!

I'm Link Parish. And filling out this list, for me, was kind of like doing a word problem. And I was never good at word problems. But here goes:

Favorite Books: Arrrrr. Favorite books not yet a movie? Forever War, Selected Stories - Theodore Sturgeon, Chronicles of Amber, Mote in God's Eye

Favorite Genres: Sci-Fi, Fantasy, Historical non-fiction.

Favorite TV shows: The Returned, Lab Rats (yes, you read that correctly), any Joss Whedon vehicle, Walking Dead, Bones, Castle. Any decent improv.

Favorite Movies: Any bad Sci-Fi or horror, all MST3K, any good Sci-Fi or horror; recently Monsters, Another Earth; previously Labyrinth, Princess Bride, Lake Placid, Armageddon, Shaun of the Dead, Stranger than Fiction, The Stand, any Monty Python/Terry Gilliam. And claymation.

Favorite Food: Coffee, followed by espresso, cappuccino, latte, tea in a pinch--and croissants.

Day Job: Retired military, dipping my toe back into writing speculative fiction. And just unwinding.

Hobbies: Papillion concierge, poetry (reading good, writing bad), getting pwned in FPS games by people 1/3 my age, travel (hope to hit the Con circuits again in a few years, huzzah! But I find I no longer handle crowds well), drinking coffee.

Other: Depends on how much coffee I've had.

Also glad this group is here. Go Space Opera!

Welcome Gil! Hmmm... Orson Scott Card's later Ender books are more purely space opera. There's a bit of a traveling-around feel to them, so there are lots of good series that should hit those high notes. What's coming to mind right now is John Scalzi's rewrite of the Little Fuzzy books.

Welcome Link! Another bad sci-fi movie fan! Yay! My husband laughs at me, especially when Bruce Campbell comes on with Alien Apocalypse or the 2005 C. Thomas Howell remake of War of the Worlds (which I liked much batter than the Tom Cruise version later).

Watch everything by Asylum, they are the grand masters of terrible cheesy sci-fi movies. They got big mainstream attention for a while with Sharknado, but they have been doing terrible crap for years.

Some of my favorites.
MegaPiranha
2-headed Shark Attack
Moby Dick 2010
Ghost Shark

Space opera is one of my favourite genres, in books, tv shows, films and video games.

Welcome Erika! A mystery-space opera fan. Now that's an interesting combination! I'm totally blanking out at the moment, but there's this great space opera-ish / mystery series about a galactic detective/agent who goes hunting for stuff like stolen art. And then of course a quasar or something blows up and they have to shield the planet from destruction (it -is- space opera).

Gah! Help me out, peeps! Who the heck wrote that series?

message 687: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Ellis I've always followed science fiction in general, and space opera in particular. I have all the Star Wars books, too many Trek books, and since being introduced to Kindle, have read a lot of good SO I'd never seen before.

I watch anything SO on tv or dvd. I'm also a space based computer game player, beginning with the original Star Trek game on a university mainframe, and with the Apple II and a game called Warp Factor.

The Wing Commander series got me through a dark time in my life. The X2/X3 series through another.

Last year I started writing a space opera novel, using my game playing experiences as base for the combat. It had been in my head for 20 years. Today, I'm a full time author writing a series which is turning into something a lot larger than I planned.

Wasn't Tomorrow People an ITV show. I remember watching the series on CBC and I am sure that old ITV logo and sound effect played at the beginning of the show. I enjoyed the first few seasons but I found it got sort of silly near the end. It got shown on YTV when that station got up and running but it has been years since I saw it.
And yes "Stranger in a Strange Land" is a great book. It was one of the books we read in our Grade 13 English B class. Thank god Rev. Ken Campbell didn't know about that one. (any and all references will be explained if anyone is actually that interested)

I loved the original Tomorrow People. I think it was originally made in the 70s. I saw it in the 90s (I think) on Nickelodeon.

There have been two remakes though.

R. Michael Litchfield (rmichaellitchfield) | 28 comments Wasn't Tomorrow People an ITV show?

That's right, I automatically assign any Brit show to the beeb but this was an exception.

I liked the innocent hopeful vibe of the original, the Wb remake that's on netflix isn't horrible but it suffers the too-pretty-for-words curse that all WB shows have. Also the stories don't work nearly as well when you have twentysomethings (and a few 30somethings) pretending to be late teenagers rather than gawky early teens like in the original.

Welcome Lucas.

So 70s and 80s Cold War spy flicks? Have you seen Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy? It's easily one of the top 3 spy movies ever made.
The Bourne trilogy is the top action spy movies.

Good taste in movies.

message 695: by Lucas (new)

Lucas Bale (lucasbale) Jonathan, I'm actually holding off on watching the Oldman version (just came onto Danish Netflix, what timing!) as I need to write an alternative history piece for an anthology that presupposes Philby was never caught and became Chief of Six (whereupon he took Angleton's life and the CIA became perforated by a series of moles). A few other historical liberties for the alternative history and we have Russia and China in control of much of Europe and Asia, and a vastly-weakened US. Might be fun. I watched the Alec Guinness version years ago, but I rather like the idea of watching it again, and then the Oldman version, to get me in the mood for the story. But I agree, fantastic film. I also loved Richard Burton in The Spy Who Came In From The Cold. Well worth your time.

Wesley F Hello, my name is Wesley Fox and I am a self-published author as well as a huge sci-fi fan. It started with a Star Trek: The Next Generation marathon on TV when I was in second grade and grew from there.

Gene Roddenberry was a huge influence on me then later came Frank Herbert's Dune, Star Wars (of course), and Michael Crichton. I love all forms of science fiction, and lately have had a taste for cyberpunk, space opera, and biotech.

Here are favorites: Dune, Star Trek movies, Matrix, Jurassic Park, Walking Dead, and Game of Thrones.

As a day job, I work as a consultant helping small biotech companies develop life-saving therapies. That is the cool way of saying I am a regulatory affairs specialist.

Check out my website at Prescientscifi.com for the blog, reviews, and information on my books. I also have a podcast named Thoughtcrime available at iTunes and Soundcloud.
