Probably better off asking what I like in regards to TV shows and Movies.

I love both genres dearly and have no qualms about a bit of magic on my spaceship :-) Or my fantasy realm 'gods' turning out to be an alien species guiding hand! Space Opera Fans is a hospitable place for crossover fans. If you're into gaming, I think you'll enjoy digital marketing once you get past the steep learning curve. Marketing and game theory have a lot in common. We have a poor, neglected gaming folder down towards the bottom of the community. If any game you enjoy is remotely space-operish, you're welcome to go down there to start a thread and REVIEW it, and then I'll link it to my master-thread.
Welcome to Space Opera Fans!
Hello! I am Lissette, and I am new here.My favorite books change constantly. Currently, I am in love with "Master of Crows," by Grace Draven. It is a fantasy book, which is my favorite genre––though space opera has become a close runner up!
I had no idea what space opera was until a couple of months ago; I thought that science fiction was the same, and so I generally didn't read much of it. It just seemed like it was all techno-garble, scientific lecture-fests, and deep space explosions. It was hard for me to find more social, character-based adventures that didn't turn into convoluted political/military drama. (Nothing wrong with that; it's just not for me––though I DID like Star Trek: DS9.) There were a few books I liked, and, thanks to the Goodreads recommendations, I've found many more!
I don't watch television much anymore, but my current favorites are "Empire" and (once the new season starts up again,) SyFy's "Defiance". Why are there not any Defiance novelizations yet? I'd be reading them up, down, and sideways!

Space Opera is the genre of Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars, larger than life, focusing on the interpersonal relationships and drama as much as (or more than) the techno-speak, although most SOF also like their tech-bling :-) Welcome!
Name: I go by Tani on the interwebz. ;) Favorite Books: I go all over. Anything by Lois McMaster Bujold, certainly. Patricia Briggs's urban fantasy (Mercy Thompson and the Alpha and Omega books). Carol Berg's first trilogy (Rai-kirah, I believe it's called) is one of my favorites ever. Recently, I've loved Red Rising by Pierce Brown, Mars Evacuees by Sophia McDougall, The Thousand Names by Django Wexler, and Blindsight by Peter Watts.
Favorite Genres: Epic fantasy tends to be my go-to genre, but I really enjoy urban fantasy as well, and space opera is an old love that I'd like to read more in.
Favorite TV shows: Firefly! House! Bones! Fairy Tail! Skip Beat! Lots of things, in other words. ;)
Favorite Movies: I'm big into Marvel right now, so Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy should be high on that list. I love the musicals too, so things like Pitch Perfect and Hairspray are high on my list. Mulan is my favorite Disney movie.
Favorite Food: Mmm, curry. Gyoza. Tempura. Japanese food, in general.
Day Job: Clerk, seeking an accounting job.
Hobbies: I write, play video games, read, knit occasionally.
Other: Hi!
Tani wrote: "Favorite Movies: I'm big into Marvel right now, so Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy should be high on that list....."Yay!!! Another superhero junkie!!! [*fist bump*]
Welcome to Space Opera Fans, Tani. Poke around and hope into any discussion which interests you.
Hi, my name is Maximillian d'Erembourg, please call me Max. I will spare you all my pseudo and pen-names =}Anna, I have to call you on something you posted. I suppose it may be un-wise or ill-advised to do such a thing in my opening post, eh? =} But no-one else seems to have caught it.
You posted:
"I think you'd enjoy those ... maybe the Expanse series by Peter F. Hamilton?"
The Expanse Series was by COREY, not Hamilton, James S.A. Corey (and is being made into a Syfy Channel series, out later this year. I loved the first book, hope they don't screw it up!)
My young life was changed forever the moment I (at age 9) saw Darth Vader stride through the smoke and laser fire in the opening scenes of A New Hope.Have been a sci-fi and Star Wars geek ever since.
"Do you ever go to genre conferences?" Lately quite a bit. SDCC, SDCBC, ConDor, ConFluence, ConVergence and the La Jolla Writers Conference. Planning on going to Whedonopolis.
"Do you like to do geeky things that co-workers would probably be surprised to learn? Space Opera Fans is the place to get in touch with your inner geek!": I met Ray Bradbury at one of his many traveling lectures, before he died. Gave him a copy of my manuscript, which he later commented on by e-mail (through his grandson, since Ray Bradbury -a silver age sci-fi guru- never owned or used a computer!)
"Here's some suggested stuff we'd love to hear:"
Name: Withheld for tax purposes. =}
Favorite Books: Dune, Shogun (committed to making the SO version before I die) Anything my James S.A. Corey, Hamilton, Bradbury, S.A. Sterling, And Finally: Alfred A Bester's (yes he was more than just a B5 character) 1956 The Stars My Desination, and The Burning Man.
Favorite Genres: Space Opera (duh!), fantasy, NF science such as astonomy and Quantum-physics.
Favorite TV shows: Farscape, SAAB, Firefly, B5, new BSG (which I can claim to have influenced), most things Joss Whedon, Big Bang Theory for laughs.
LEAST favorite TV shows: Lexx & Lost (It hurts most when you WANT to like sci-fi but just CAN'T) anything calling itself "reality."
Favorite Movies:Guardians of the Galaxy, The Avengers, Ice Pirates, Ladyhawke, (Dating Myself), Blade Runner, .
Favorite Food: Asian. Cheese-less Italian. Seafood. BBQ. Wait...anything edible.
Day Job: lost in 2013 when I spent 5 months taking care of my dying mother 24/7, instead of the 3 months state law allows for. Decided to take it as an opportunity to write full time!...and I'm almost out of money now... =}
Hobbies: Used to be computer games and TV watching. Now just writing, and Internet surfing related to writing/self-publishing. Still read sci-fi and SO, though.Oh, still have a D&D group.
Other: I spent 15 years putting on heavy armor and hitting other people with big heavy wooden sticks.
Fear Not! I shall not self-promote! Ok, I couldn't, really, as the Space Opera I JUST finished has not been released yet; my Betas are still reading it over one last time.
I DO think you'll like it, though, Anna: It's a Space Opera with three main characters that each obtain "superpowers" taking it into the realm of SO/Superhero crossover. Also a pinch of romance, though very little in the first book.

In my defense, most of my moderating is done after 11:00 p.m. at night, after working all day and chasing around the kids, so , yeah ... Peter F. Hamilton ... awesome ... James S.A. Corey ... awesome ... my brain just hit awesome overload and merged it all into a sleep deprived singularity.

Hi all. I'm Jon Bergeron.Favorite Books are quite a few: The Ocean at the End of the Lane is all my all time favorite book ever. I have no idea how it will ever be topped. Next to that is Redshirts, Fuzzy Nation, Robopocalypse, Revelation Space, American Gods and that paragraph long short story about Santa Claus being a slaver written by Neil Gaiman. I love that one.
Favorite Genres: sci-fi. not a big fan of fantasy anymore, though when I was in high school I read 1 - 2 fantasy books a week. It was the ONLY genre I would read. now I primarily read sci-fi though I will slip in a fantasy book a time or two a year, and a Patterson book when I'm feeling brain dead.
Favorite TV shows: Brooklyn Nine-Nine (so happy I started watching that show) and Battlestar Galactica (best movie/tv show of all time) and The Daily Show.
Favorite Movies: The Dark Knight, I get chills at certain parts because of how great it is. Three Kings, I've seen that movie about a hundred times. Snatch, Fight Club, Boondock Saints, First Contact, the first Abrams Star Trek and Princess Bride.
Favorite Food: don't have one. but the best dish I have ever had is from Columbia a restaurant in Tampa Florida. It was an orgy of flavors. I'm talking so many flavors I actually savored my bites, and that's big because every time I eat I eat like I'm still in the Marine Corps right out of bootcamp.
Day Job: stay at home dad and author
Hobbies: writing and thinking up new stories. I'm not joking about that. writing is my hobby because of how much I love it.
Other: I have one book out right now with another one out by the end of the year maybe early next year, though if I had my druthers I would put it out as fast as I could.
My book should probably be on my profile. I'll be sad if it isn't :)
I play videogames every now and then. Uncharted is the best videogame series ever created.
and I don't bother much with grammar in comment posts :) :)

Hi! My name is Jason Hendricks. Science Fiction is my favorite genre, and Space Opera is my favorite sub genre in it (Yep, I'm that nerdy). This group was recommended when I searched Space Opera. I'm always looking for new Space Operas to read and this seemed like a great place to get suggestions, even though my to read list is already ridiculous.Favorite Books: Lord of the Rings, Dune, A Song of Ice and Fire, Shogun, The Count of Monte Cristo. Specifically Space Opera: The Hyperion Cantos, Revelation Space, Saturn's Children, The Alliance-Union Universe, The Expanse, Known Space.
Favorite Genres: Science Fiction (obviously). Particularly Space Opera, Cyberpunk/Post-Cyberpunk an Post-Apocalypse. But I'll read anything that looks interesting. I also love Fantasy and Horror. Non-Fiction wise I read a lot of History (what I minored in) and Politics. I'm pretty politically mined, but I'm not here to debate/argue. I'm just here for the Starships.
Favorite TV shows: Currently Game of Thrones, The Walking Dead, Last Week Tonight, Flash, Arrow, Archer, Vikings. Past favorites are the usual: Star Trek, Stargate, BSG, Firefly, Babylon 5, Avatar/Korra.
Favorite Movies: Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Stark Trek (even numbered), Marvel Films, Ghost in the Shell, Akira,
James Bond, The Book of Eli, Mad Max, Jurassic Park, Alien/s, Predator, Terminator, Anything by Hayao Miyazaki.
Favorite Food: Italian, Mexican, Chinese, American (burgers, fries, etc...).
Day Job: Paralegal
Hobbies: Reading, Tabletop Gaming, Video Games, Movies and TV, Hanging with friends, Trolling Statists.
Other: So the major Space Operas on my to read list are Dread Empire's Fall by Walter Jon Williams, The Night's Dawn Trilogy by Peter F. Hamilton (honestly everything else by Peter F. Hamilton but that trilogy is suppose to be his best), The Uplift Saga by David Brin, The Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold. I'd love to hear suggestions from anyone. Thanks!

Jason wrote: "Hi! My name is Jason Hendricks. Science Fiction is my favorite genre, and Space Opera is my favorite sub genre in it (Yep, I'm that nerdy). This group was recommended when I searched Space Opera. I..."Hmmmm. Suggestions? Okay:
- By John Bowers: The Fighter Queen saga (starts with "The Fighter King"), The Starport series. Warning: graphic sex in both series.
- By Bruce Davis (single): That Which is Human. There is more than one "Bruce Davis". This one is the trauma surgeon who writes SciFi and (true) doctor books. He has a series (The Profit Logbook) that is kinda "space opera", but mostly takes place in various ports.
- By Al Philipson: "Children of Destruction". It starts with a post-apocalyptic "ground pounder" story, but the second half of the book is a space opera. Warning: a fair amount of graphic sex.
- By Piers Anthony: His Space Tyrant series.
-By Steven Campbell: Hard Luck Hank series (I've just read the first one: "Screw the Galaxy").
-Alan Dean Foster: His Pip and Flinx adventures. Start with "For Love of Mother-Not" (limited to a planet, but he eventually gets space-born in other books)
-Heinlein: The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, Starship Troopers (nothing like the crappy movie)
-Gene N. McMurtry: Commodore Farmer (a single).
-Richard Winder: Stella (a single)
-E. E. "Doc" Smith: the Lensman series. Campy by today's standards, but a true classic series that was well-done for its time.
That's all I can think of for Space Operas off the top of my head at this time. Sorry about the volume. I hope I didn't make any messes on your carpet.
