I loved Blake's 7, too. I thought it was one of the most intelligent of the sci-fi shows from that era.
Betsy wrote: "I loved Blake's 7, too. I thought it was one of the most intelligent of the sci-fi shows from that era."Exactly. It really had deep characterization and raised tough issues about leadership, motivation, etc. Even the 'hero' Blake has a crisis about how much he is willing to sacrifice.

In fact, I'm a fan of all the old movie serials, like the Flash Gordons, Phantom, Mandrake, etc. The Buck Rogers serial introduced matter transporter technology to the screen as well, at least 25 years before Star Trek used it. Nothing beats a bit of Buster Crabbe when you're feeling down.
I keep a photo of Buster C as Flash (with Ming, Dale and Barin) in a scene from the original 1930's serial on my writing desk!

Welcome Sadie! Now that you've finished Harry Potter, yes, Space Opera is the way to go with that balance of technology and 'stuff we don't need to explain.'

Welcome Mike! I'm also a Stargate fan! I miss that 'we can solve that problem' feel of the show! If you enjoyed Stargate and Star Wars as well as both EU's, you might also enjoy the Farscape series and the Farscape EU.

@Adam - I liked Flash Gordon, too ... both the original and also the reboot that was on SciFi channel for a while.

Really happy to have found this group. I love the space opera genre but have hardly scratched the surface. I'm seeking something with the epic sweep and detail of Herman Wouk's "The Winds of War" but done up in sci-fi trappings. Any suggestions?
Robert wrote: " I'm seeking something with the epic sweep and detail of Herman Wouk's "The Winds of War" but done up in sci-fi trappings."
I'd recommend the Honor Harrington series. It's much longer than the The Winds of War series, but definitely has epic sweep and detail.

That was one of those family sagas popular during the 1970's if I remember right, along the epic veins of the Thornbirds and Shogun and Roots. Only set between the clashing Axis and Allies of WWII?
Maybe Dune by Frank Herbert? It's not exactly what you're looking for, but it's got a bit of that clashing 'great houses' crushing the hero (and his family). I'll have to think on it some more and see if anything comes to me.
Anyways, welcome to Space Opera Fans!!

Welcome Michael! A Clockwork Orange and Apocalypse Now? That's some heavy stuff :-) I bet you'll enjoy some of the military sci-fi suggestions? I was just reading up on Das Boot for some other topic I've been researching. Not space opera, but similar to a spaceship I would think?
Welcome to Space Opera Fans!

Yes, a sub is very much like a spaceship. It's small, enclosed, and you need to keep the outside out. Not weightless, though.
Thanks for the recs! The Honor Harrington series sounds fantastic; I will definitely be checking it out. Also, I've been meaning to dip back into Dune for a while. I made two attempts in earlier years but couldn't fully wrap my head around it at the time. I think I'm now in the proper space to grapple with the mysticism of Herbert's vision. Looking forward to our discussions!
Hi. I'm R. K. MannI follow what's current in science as well as sci fi. I enjoy doing it and it's helped me as a writer.
I've read a lot of the same great books that others have listed here and I'm a serious Heinlein fan. I also read escapist funny chick lit, mysteries and some historical fiction.
I really identified with what Jeffrey posted about current sf.
Hello everyone, my name is Paul. Here are the essentials about me:Favorite Authors: Larry Niven, John Scalzi, Robert Heinlein, Roger Zelazny, Jules Verne, Jerry Pournelle
Favorite Shows: Firefly, Buffy, Warehouse 13, Futurama, Psych
Favorite Books: Ringworld, Redshirts, The Prefect, The Magician Trilogy, Starship Troopers
I grew up reading science fiction. I tend to find an author I like and read his or her entire catalog of works.
Greetings All,I grew up in a house of books. There were shelves in every room. Downstairs in what was called the 'den' by the realtor but my parents found too cold to do anything but store some more books in, pulp magazines and sci-fi lined the walls.
I've loved books and sci-fi all my life and I have never been bored. Always had a book to read or a story to think about.
Favortie sci-fi Author is H. Beam Piper, but there are a legion more that are neck and neck, Bujold, Pournelle, Heinlein, Drake... it is a long list.

Welcome R.K.! I think a lot of us can relate to the unfortunate trend of earth-based dystopia being labeled 'sci-fi' when it really isn't. There was a hopefulness to the classic sci-fi which seems to be lacking in most entertainment today, whether it's movies, television, gaming or literature. Part of this is public perception, but part of it is also the corporate machinery of the entertainment industry which decides which projects to throw money behind. All we can do (here, on Space Opera fans) is encourage authors to write the kind of sci-fi stories they love and readers to keep looking if that book they want isn't available on the Barnes & Noble bookshelf. There's a TON of indie authors out there who still write these kinds of stories, you just have to look for them.

Lonesome Dove? I loved that book. And the mini-series too. Been a l-o-n-g time since I read it though. Welcome to SOF!
Ello peeps! My name is Florence, and you can call me that, or Flo, Flo Jo, Flor, FloDot, or Oni. (Can you guess what it is short for? ;) )My favorite books are the Harry Potter series, pretty much anything by Rick Riordan, the first two books of The Mark of the Lion series (admittedly, I have yet to read the last), tons and tons of manga (Fairy Tail, Naruto, One Piece, Bleach, and Skip Beat, to name a few), and of course LOTR. I have a ton more, but really don't want to make this that long.
Anywho, I don't really have a favorite genre, though I do tend to favor sci-fi and fantasy. My favorite TV shows vary from ones like 'I Love Lucy', to 'Trinity Blood'. I pretty much love anime, heh. Favorite movies would be the entire LOTR and (please don't hate me...) Hobbit series, along with the Studio Ghibli films (my MOST favorite being 'Whisper of the Heart', 'My Neighbor Totoro', 'Howl's Moving Castle', and 'Ponyo'), and 'Ever After' (again, I've got a ton more, but ain't gonna name 'em all).

I am a Ninja by day, and a Guild Wizard by night...wait, what?
Hobbies include, but are not limited to, reading, writing, drawing, hiking, photography, and watching loads of anime.

Name: KevinFavorite Books: Too many to list.
I prefer to think of favorite authors...me being an old-timer, it has to be Heinlein. Although there are many, many others I love as well: Asimov, Gordon Dickson, PK Dick, Niven, Harrison, Pohl, Clark, Sturgeon, etc.
Favorite Genres: Hard Sci-Fi (I don't consider fantasy as sci-fi), Spy/Espionage
Favorite TV shows: As a hard-core geek, of course it's "Big Bang Theory"
Favorite Movies: I don't even know where to start...probably "The Day the Earth Stood Still" original 1951 version
Day Job: IT Consultant
Many years (decades) ago while in high school, I read every single science fiction book in our local library. Shortly after that, I got interested in other things. Started reading sci-fi again about 2 years ago.
If I read a book I really like, I tend to read everything that author has written.
I am a very voracious reader, 1-3 books per week.
Hello group citizens. My name is Arlin Fehr. You know, at first when I was looking over all the groups available on goodreads, it was a bit overwhelming to think of which one I'd like to go with. As soon as I saw a space opera group though, I knew my search was over. These would be my people. :) so let's get to know each other yes?
Favorite Books: This seems to change as time goes on... Presently? I think I'd have to go with an old classic, Rendezvous at Rama by Arthur C Clark. Loved that book.
Favorite Genres: Sci-fi (no surprise), Fantasy, action, comedic, really almost anything will catch my fancy.
Favorite TV shows: Haven't watched a lot of T.V. lately. I rather enjoyed Code Geass, and more recently I've been watching Doctor Who again. It will be a long time until I've caught up with it though.
Favorite Movies: Interstellar was simply amazing in my view. I loved it. But I've also got a soft spot for romps such as Pacific Rim.
Favorite Food: I have a trinity of favorite foods, those being pizza, lasagna, and spaghetti.
Day Job: Grocer presently. Full time lord of the fruit aisle and viceroy of vegetables.
Hobbies: Fixing broken electronics, playing board games, making new things, learning new things, and having interesting conversations with people.
Other: I am an author myself, and pretty easy to get along with. I love a good challenge, I once fixed a T.V. rather than throw it out, even though it was an older T.V. I deiced to do that just so I could see if I could.
I'm rather hoping to be introduced to some good space opera I've never heard before, it's my genre of choice. Plus, you know, it's just fun to read.
Kevin wrote: "I prefer to think of favorite authors...me being an old-timer, it has to be Heinlein. Although there are many, many others I love as well: Asimov, Gor..."Welcome Kevin! Space Opera tends to be softer in nature than 'hard' sci-fi (more about the people than the technology), but we have many fine 'hard' space opera tales as well, military space opera and some of the newer authors who write big fat doorstoppers of sci-fi epics. I think you'd enjoy those ... maybe the Expanse series by Peter F. Hamilton?

Welcome Arlin! It's just the loss of that 'I can fix things through science' attitude that many of us were bemoaning lately, that Arthur C. Clarke optimism. I think you'll like it here.
