Clara A short chapter, and not a long going on, but we learn something is happening Beyond the Wall.

1-They are in a village called Whitetree, and it's shaded by the canopy of a tree that seems to be enormous. The village is not that big, but still! Jon described the tree to have a giant mouth, big enough to fit a sheep. That's crazy!

2-Lord Commander Mormont brought his raven with him, he seems to be with him all the time.

3-I liked Jon and Jeor's fathers both thought you can't lie in front of a tree, because the gods would know. I liked Jeor told that about his father.

4-They found skulls in the ashes, thw wildlings burn their dead. Jon knows it's because they don't want more wights, but Jeor wonders why that might be. I am sure everyone knows what happened back at Castle Black, but I guess their Commander doesn't say so so they won't be that scared.

5-Introduction to Dolorous Edd! I liked him I think. And lol at what he thought dead people would say if they could speak.

6-Jon and Edd enter a house, that's empty and it looks like nobody lived there except for some ashes they so. A lor of ashes in this chapter. Also, they thought there was an "old dung smell".

7-This was the fourth village they past, and this one was empty like the others. People were leaving, and they don't know why. I was so interested in why the first time I read it, it's so creepy! There wasn't much to hunt as well. Even the animals are leaving.

8-Jon and Chett crossed stares, and they won't get along in this journey at all. Chett's an idiot.

9-The raven is very smart, he said "gone" by himself. Seems like he can analyze situations, at least a little bit.

10-I forgot about Bedwyck, a man they call giant because I assume looks like one. He climbed to a tree, and saw water ahead. Mormont does not want to stay in the village, Jon later said they wouldn't fit, but I guess Mormont didn't like the place.

11-Mormont wrote to Aemon telling him about the situation, and I can't quite remember if the Maester responds to the letters or not.

12-They were 200 men, with half the mounts. It must be hard to walk there, so I guess they take turns.

13-The men were unease, to not say afraid. I would too. Even the most seasoned men thought the haunted forest never looked so haunted. I would be so damn scared!

14-He thinks about Arya when he sees his hand and my hearts breaks. He wonders how she is faring, and he's afraid he won't ever see her again. The feels man. If he doesn't toss her hair again, I can't even think about it! I love them so much!

15-Sam is teaching the birds some words, and one of those words was snow. Interesting Jon thought it was enough with Mormont's raven, since snow meant death sometimes in the north.

16-Very interesting Sam is not scared anymore, or at least not as scared as the other men. Poor boy, he thought the first night the wildlings were there to kill him everytime a brother stood up. He is hardly scared. I don't know how, I would cry.

17-Also, interesting Mormont said his raven "never said a thing worth hearing". I disagree.

18-Qhoron will join them at some point, with 100 more men. Jeor tols Jon they will find out what's going on, and why are the people leaving. Jon thinks maybe his uncle passed through those empty villages, and Jeor told him maybe something or someone didn't want his uncle to find more. Jon thinks that something or someone might find them first. Such a creepy end for this chapter!

The heart tree is the largest tree Jon’s ever seen. The trunk is 8 feet wide, wow! The face on it has a hollowed out mouth so large it could swallow a sheep. Jon can feel its power. A very old and powerful tree, mysterious!

2. Thoren Smallwood for some reason wants to chop the thing down. Wtf... Jon says his father believed you couldn’t lie in front of a heart tree; the gods knew when men were lying. :)

3. “A bastard sword for a bastard, the men joked.” I absolutely love this!

4. Creepy! Inside the hollow mouth of the tree are two skulls. The mouth was blackened by fire, very interesting. The tree didn’t burn down when they used it as a hearth? They find two skulls inside the mouth among ashes with bits of bone, a funeral cremation, then. One skull is smaller than the other. Was one just a child? :( Lord Mormont says it’s no secret the wildlings burn their dead, pity there aren’t any around to explain why, but I think they all know, not just Jon.

5. Mormont says it’s said the children of hte forest could speak to the dead; wish I knew if that were true.

6. Didn’t remember Dolorous Edd’s real name is Eddison Tollett. I smiled when he wonders out loud what the dead complain about. Funny.

7. When Jon remarks how dismal these homes are, Dolorous Edd tells him he used to live in a home like this, and that was the best time of his life. Jon asks if he calls a pile of straw a bed and Edd says it is if it’s softer than the ground and has a roof over it. :) Seems Jon was spoiled growing up. Most people don’t get to live in fine castles.

8. Apparently Whitetree is the fourth empty village they’ve come across. There’s nothing in any of them. There are no signs of being attacked. Everyone and everything just took off and disappeared. Creepy.

9. Mormont’s raven says “Gone,” without being prompted. Hmm...

10. Thoren says wildlings were living here last year, so it hasn’t been abandoned too long ago. Ugh, Thoren’s wearing Ser Jaremy Rykkar’s old cloak. The Night’s Watch wastes nothing, bu of all people...this man looks and wants to be Lord Commander.

11. A scout sees a lake north of them so they head up there to make camp. When they left they were in good spirits, but the longer they’re in the forest the more somber they’re getting. Hmm... With no wildlings about and this being called the Haunted Forest, makes everyone uneasy. Even the game is scarce.

12. Jon airs out his burnt fingers and suddenly thinks of Arya and how he used to muss up her hair. :) Interesting how they both keep thinking about each other. :)

13. Jon comes up to talk to Sam and the birds freak out when they see him. Some sound suspiciously like words. What words? Sam has been teaching them how to say “Snow.” :)

14. Interesting how the farther Sam goes north of the Wall the less scared he gets, the completely opposite from the rest of the men. I like how Jon jokes saying they’ll make a ranger out of Sam yet and Sam says, “Don’t you dare!” Ha!

15. Ha! When Jon reaches Mormont again, after telling him Sam sent the latest news to Maester Aemon, he says he’s been teaching the birds to talk. I love how Mormont snorts and says he’ll regret that. “Damned things make a lot of noise, but they never say a thing worth hearing.” Or do they?

16. Mormont knows that Benjen Stark would have made it his business to find out why these villages are all empty, so they must keep searching, maybe they’ll find him on the way. They’re also going to team up soon with another 100 rangers led by Qhorin Halfhand, famed commander of the Shadow Tower.

Clara Your point 10 it's interesting, I haven't thought about it.
