Tom Webber - I am pleased to join this group. I enjoy reading history - now that school is well behind and I do not have to memorize dates. I should add that the books I read in high school (late 50's) and college (early 60's) are no match for today's books. I believe we are living in a real golden age of history. The authors are very good; research tools are better; and there is so much more information available from government and private sources. In US history, I have found books on early American history to be exceptional, as well as books on WWII.

Hello all... my name is Sam an I started reading history an biography's as a hobby in my early 30's which in my case would be thirty years ago. It was a natural for me as my interest's in school were science & history; not to mention my best grades. My interests are more in 'what got us here' an 'interesting people' more so than what's going on 'while' we're here. I guess you could say it is the things that led up to where we are, decisions made, roads taken with all the stumbles an miscues an sometimes right choices.

Outside of reading I enjoy biking, running, gardening and hiking. I am always amazed by the outdoors and my happiest days are those when I get to sit outside and read (and sometimes nap). I love the ocean and have been exploring the history that surrounds me here in this little state. Recently I visited the Saugus Iron Works outside of Boston.

Hello, I'm Elizabeth (Zab for short), and I'm very excited to join this group.As anyone who's met me can tell you, history and books are my two favorite things (along with my dog). Even when I try to take a break from reading history books and get into something else, I always find myself tempted by another book about the past.

Hello! I go by Publius. I'm in the U.S. My professional area of study is Classical history, but I am also passionate about early U.S. history, from the Revolutionary period to the Civil War. My primary focus is usually on the causes and consequences of slavery and the politics surrounding it, particularly in respect to the founders and their various views, actions, and inaction. As far as Classics, I've read a ton of primary sources, but I'm working on spreading out to some more modern texts.
I'm very shy, but I also have strong opinions about everything (while remaining polite about it), so I'm excited to be in this group.
Hello and thanks for the add to the group, my name is Michael Kuras and I live in Texas at the moment after leaving the Active side of the US Army to join the Reserves. I am Majoring in History where I one day hope to become a curator and help preserve our History. I love reading about War History and can talk on and on about the Civil War and War World 2 but I also love and have a passion for the Space Race and anything to do with Nasa. I also collect anything to deal with History including old magazines, books, pictures and coins to name a few.

Hi, my name's Liz, I'm retired and live in rural Suffolk. I've always been slightly obsessed by the First WorldWar - to the extent of making my reluctant husband spend some of our honeymoon in trenches and cemeteries around Ypres. I possess probably hundreds of WW1 books (mostly, I admit British and Western front) but am always finding there's more to know and read.
Currently I'm interested in what happened when the guns fell silent. I know the system of demobilisation seemed very unfair to the Tommies, huge unemployment followed, and of course the influenza pandemic. I've read 'The Eleventh hour', and 'The great silence' and Adam Thorpe wrote an interesting novel called '1921'. I'm currently reading 'Six Weeks' (life expectancy of a junior officer) by John Lewis-Stempel, which has a good chapter on the aftermath. Has anyone got any recommendations?
I'm also interested to a slightly lesser extent in the American Civil War, the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny - and aspects of WW2.
I may be on the wrong thread here, but I hope not!

Hi, Randy here. I am a US tax lawyer with an interest in all eras and geographies. I do have a particular interest in the American colonial and revolutionary eras, which brings together my interests in constitutional law and theory and political history/theory/philosophy. Joining this group is likely dangerous because I will want to try to read everything mentioned but sadly do not have time to do so.

I've been a sporadic reader for most of my adult life; mostly fiction in the action/adventure genre with some non-fiction sprinkled in, mostly modern military and the War on Terror. Hi everyone, so my name is Jono ... I grew up in the rainbow nation South Africa, with Welsh and English parents. My wife and I moved to the little spot of an island called Mauritius almost 2 years ago after having traveled extensively in Africa and Europe, as well as being based in Florida for a time. Love music, songwriting, sports and have always been extremely inspired and influenced by history ... with all it's characters and plots. I wish I could read 10 times faster and stay up a whole lot later (without getting super grumpy after a few days) ... so I could read everything about History (that's good and well written of course :) )!!
I lean towards history that speaks about empires rising and falling (Mongol, Chin, Roman, British and probably ALL the others), violent and non-violent revolutions and 'righteous' rebellions, major wars and history shaping battles.
Having said that I am open to pretty much anything and am super excited to be a part of this group with all you wonderful people. Officially my first book club ever ... If it wasn't for my wife's awesome geekiness showing me I can actually do this type of thing online ... I would still be sharing my opinions with my attentive Labrador (don't get out much and Boxer aint got time for that)!
Reading the book of the month, The Underground Railroad right now, painful but brilliantly written.

Thank you for having me in the group. I am new to Goodreads.I grew up on the East Coast of the US and have spent a lot of time living and traveling in Asia (Taiwan, China, and Japan). Now I live in Mobile, Alabama, where I teach history.
My youthful influences were C.V. Wedgwood and Francis Parkman, who tended toward the epic. Wedgwood's The Thirty Years War may be the best history I've ever read. In fact, it ruined my neck, for I read it with my chin on my chest and my nose in the book. I have also enjoyed Winston Churchill's books, which are epics, of course.
My favorite historian of China is Timothy Brook. The best book on Japan in my view is The World of the Shining Prince, which brings the classical Heian period to life.
As for what I've been reading recently, I tend to cycle through different genres and subjects, to keep things fresh. I've actually been reading mostly Hungarian and Czech novels, but I work in some history too. I just read A New Illustrated History of Taiwan, by Wan-yao Chou. I'll also be checking in with a Civil War history, Freedom National, by James Oaks (who I heard in a lecture). My favorite recent CW history is 1861: A Civil War Awakening, by Adam Goodheart; and I also got a lot out of What this Cruel War was Over, by Chandra Manning.
As a sub-category of CW history, I'm interested in Southern Unionism. Soon I will read Patriots and Rebels, by John C. Bush.
I'm also into historical fiction.

Also new to GoodReads and am a purely amateur history buff. I grew up and spent most of my life in New Hampshire and now live in central Florida with my wonderful wife and an assortment of horses, dogs, cats, rabbits and chickens. I started my interest in history with The Civil War: A Narrative and more recently have read A History of the English Speaking Peoples, 4 Vols and The World Crisis, 1911-1918. Now reading The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, vol. 1-3: Volumes 1, 2, 3, as well as Armor and Blood: The Battle of Kursk: The Turning Point of World War II.
I'm looking forward to more recommendations and some interesting discussions. Thanks for having me in your group!

You might like Francis Parkman and C.V. Wedgwood. The latter's book on the Thirty Years War is a favorite of mine. The Thirty Years War

I'm Jane from Oregon, USA. I like reading both fiction and non-fiction history and also listening on Audible. I belong to 2 Pulitzer groups, a group reading only books that have won an award, a classics group, and a group that reads across genres in a yearly challenge. I love good mysteries as well. Your group looked so interesting and since it has so many sub historical categories there will be plenty here to keep me going! I usually have 3 books going at a time plus an Audible selection.

I'm better in print than in person, prefer handcrafts and an audiobook to TV, but appreciate a good storyline in a video game, too. My fiction reads tend toward fantasy, but I'm pretty particular.
