Hello, my name is Mike Bergen and I am semi-retired with a long background and interest in history. I was born during WW 2 in Croydon, England, grew up in Montreal Canada and have spent most of my adult life living in Europe (UK, France and Germany) and South Africa. My interest in history was awakened by my 4th grade teacher who introduced us to the Romans, about whom I have been fascinated ever since. I have travelled extensively and visited many historical sites around the world. My more recent interest and reading has been on the Victorian and Edwardian Eras, the South African wars, WW 1, WW 2 and the Cold War. I am busy working my way in detail from one end of the 20th century to the other.

Hello there! I'm 24 - Indian - PhD scholar in Transportation.
One of my favorite past times in my high-school had been reading my history textbook. It was an outgrowth of my obsession with watching old South-Indian (Telugu) movies based on Hindu mythology. I stopped reading altogether after high-school for various reasons.
I only started reading again recently. My love for history is also rekindled by watching so many World War II movies. But I think my perspective of history is different from before: earlier, Adolf Hitler was as real to me as a ten-headed monster in Ramayana; now, he's a human being just like me who did terrible things to people just like me.

I guess I'm too late to the party, but I'm looking forward to learn from you. And have a good time, too. :)

Hi everyone,

My name is Qing and new to this group. I grew up in China and now have been working as a tech author in the Netherlands for more than three years.

About two-thirds of my reading is non-fiction, history reading a sizable chunk, providing a good context and shedding light on things I do not understand well or even unaware of before. An amazing thing about history books is that the more I read them, the more I want to know.

Currently I'm reading A History of Christianity: The First Three Thousand Years. In its introduction the author writes : "(modern historians) have a moral task. They should seek to promote sanity and to curb the rhetoric which breeds fanaticism. There is no surer basis for fanaticism than bad history, which is invariably history oversimplified." It's really important to have good historians and history books.

My main motivation to join this group is not to miss good history books and interesting discussions.

Hello, I'm Wendy Lestina, from Ferndale, California, in far-northern Humboldt County. I live in the country, four miles outside of the town of 1,500 where I was born. After 35 years of living and working in Los Angeles and New York (loved both places), I inherited the family farm and returned. I am under contract from the Ferndale Museum to produce regional documentary videos (have done 14; one, "Letters Home," the story of both the home front and the men and women in uniform during WW2, won the Western History Assn.'s prize for public history in 2011). I also produce the museum's bimonthly history magazine. I am interested in all aspects of history, including natural history -- and that includes the range from such books as Bill Bryson's Home: A Short History of Private Life to the history of the development of global nuclear policy in the 1950s (Wizards of Armageddon) to a biographies of Supreme Court justices Earl Warren and Harry Blackmun to Barbara Tuchman's Guns of August and David Fromkin's Europe's Last Summer. After taking the Coursera offering from Princeton, "The History of Globalization from 1300 to the Present," I have widened my range to include Latin American history, and the history of India and China. I've never put all that down in one place before just now, and I don't think I have ever been aware of how passionate I am about all the tiny pieces of our collective lives slowly coming together.

Hi! I'm Hande.

I'm a junior history student who is very fond of almost every period -though 'periodization is a very problematic phenomenon in history classes', I assume I roughly have to use this word- but nowadays, I'm seriously thinking about stuying more on the Roman and Byzantine times, also due to my Latin classes, early structures in Transoxiana, and also the late Ottoman period through the modern times. (Pre and post-WWII included. And I know these seem totally varied in a large spectrum but I think it's possible to do them together). I'm also interested in archaeology, linguistics, literature and etimology -as a subgenre.

While I am interested in reading about all periods of history all around the world, my interest lies chiefly in colonial America and the lives of the Founding Fathers. Other interests of mine deal with the English monarchy and the wars between houses, and Napoleon's conquests. My favorite time period to learn about is Colonial America & The Revolutionary War. Hi,
My name is Adam, I'm from the U.S.A. I've enjoyed reading all my life, but for many years most of my reading was fiction. Over the last 10 years, I've been reading a lot more history. History is challenging because it can sometimes be dry and requires some patience, but it teaches you a lot about the world around you, and can give you a deeper understanding of people, places and current events. It seems like the older I get, the more interesting and important history seems.

I've been reading a bit of everything, trying to fill in my background knowledge on many countries, regions and epochs. My primary interest is American history, followed closely by European history, especially Spain. I am especially interested in reading about the regions and countries that I have had the privilege of visiting, including Spain, Central Europe, Turkey, Japan, Mexico, to name a few. And I like nothing more than learning a bit about the history of an area before taking a trip there.

As you can see, I'm pretty eclectic in my interests, and thought joining this group would give me a chance to discover more interesting histories to read, and exchange impressions on what I've already read.

Hello everybody - I'm Danny, a life-long history nerd and more recent Civil War buff. I've always been fascinated by history, especially American history. My step mom has taught American History for years, so that's the environment I grew up in. I minored in History at the University of Florida, with a special focus on American foreign policy. Over the last few years, I've developed a huge interest in the Civil War, so that consumes most of what I read now (as my GoodReads profile can attest...). I have an interest in Space History as well, though social/military history is a more immediate passion.

I'm excited to join a group of other history buffs for some great book recommendations and lively conversations!
