I'm part of another group on Good Reads called What's the name of that book???. It is a great group that helps look for forgotten books, you could try posting your message there too. I've found a few forgotten books with them and added (far too many) to my TBR list as well! Good luck, sorry I couldn't help with an actual answer though.

So Far from the Bamboo Grove, I assume you don't mean... Maybe Tales from the Bamboo Grove? But that doesn't look quite right either...

I'm guessing they were published in either the late 1970s or 1980s - 1988 at the latest probably.
Each volume was a different colour - I think. I remember there being one maroon and at least one green cover. They were progressive in terms of reading levels - book 1 was for lower readers compared to book 6.
