We noticed that when my class read it last year. We came to the conclusion that its either a translation problem or that it was done to highlight different parts of Emma's personality, depending on what she's doing - either being a caring mother/wife (or at least having a crack at it) or having an affair and spending money that she doesn't have on people who eventually leave her anyway.

I'm about half way through this book and I'm really intrigued and so I keep reading it, but I can't tell if i like it or not. I've read some pretty difficult books and this one isn't really hard to understand in it's context but in its fragmented thought. sometimes it just goes off on tangents that don't really seem applicable to anything. And other times, I find a great piece that I have to write down in my quote book. I enjoy the writing, But I can't quite follow its imagery sometimes.
