Thanks Erin!"
You're welcome!
Hello everyoneI'm Rajeev from India, an avid reader and now an author. My interest in horror was born in the early 90s when I used to watch pulpy Bollywood horror movies and TV series as a kid. (one look at this movie poster will quantify exactly how pulpy they were:
https://qph.fs.quoracdn.net/main-qimg...)
My exposure to literary, and perhaps more subtle, horror began with classic authors like Poe. I can never forget The Tell-Tale Heart and The Masque of the Red Death, nor the terror inherent in stories belonging to other genres. Just look at The Hound of the Baskervilles with the eyes of a teen.
Stephen King was my introduction to modern horror. Henceforth, I was led to other, somewhat lesser known practitioners of the genre like Clive Barker, Tim Curran and Edward Lee.
The darker and more unapologetic a tale, the more I like it. Hence my current affair with extreme horror, a field where new writers are cropping up like mushrooms, spawning a gorefest of sorts.
I hope to gain both knowledge and like-minded friends in this group, not to mention a few tons of fun.
Best regards
Rajeev Singh

Hi, Krystal. Glad to be here.
Chimney wrote: "Rajeev are you fan of Ramsay bro movies like Tehakhana, Saamri, Purana Mandar etc?"I used to be a fan of a bunch of these movies, although now I can't exactly recall the contents associated with each name - which was which, I hope you get the drift. If Tehkhana is the one starring Hemant Birje, then yes, I've seen it. I was actually in awe of that tall, imposing demonic actor Anirudh Agarwal who played Saamri and many other roles in Ramsey brothers'movies.
I might have dismissed old Indian horror cinema as pulp but there was some really good stuff too, like the TV series, Mano Ya Na Mano, which featured weird tales, one of which starred Anirudh Agarwal as the personification of a man's fear in his dreams. My own novel, The Erotic Muse, has drawn upon that image which refuses to go away.

Welcome Rajeev! That's really cool; I didn't know India had that kind of a pulpy horror movie tradition. Are they like the kind of grindhouse/exploitation movies that came out of America and Europe in the 70s?

Hi Maura.
From what I've seen of grindhouse/exploitation/giallo movies of US and Europe, (Ilsa, She-Wolf of the SS probably qualifies), their level of bawdiness and violence was only present in traces in the Indian films. You could say it was B-grade horror but Indian cinema has always had its limits when it comes to depiction of nudity. Also, there were very few production houses in the business in India, unlike, I believe, in the west where loads of such stuff was being churned out by a plethora of film-makers.
Actually, Indian cinema hasn't come a very long way in the horror genre. The traditional ghostly possession and haunted house themes are still being rebottled and served, although with better technology and hence better presentation. If you want a dose of subtle horror, Bollywood is the last place to look. :)

It's a weird western verging into horror involving a premature burial:
