Horror Aficionados discussion
Introduce Yourself!
You can say that last one again, I miss the time when we had hours upon hours every day to read.I have added pretty much all the books you linked to my reading lists, and will start with King. Thank you so much for every single recommendation, so interested to get more!
Hello and welcome to Saha, Adam and Bigmas!Adam, the story you're describing doesn't ring a bell with me, but if you don't find help here, there is a Goodreads group devoted to finding the titles of books. I believe it's name is "What's the name of that book?", or something similar.
Hey! I am Lena and I'm 21 years old. I have loved horror since I was a kid, and it is something me and mom always watched together! I took a long break from horror when I went to highschool, but I recently got back in to it. I love horror movies and books! everything macabre and scary is a favorite.
Hi Lena, welcome to HA.I just finished
The Library at Mount Char and it was very good. You might like to check it out.
Hi, I'm Danny and I'm 37 year old. I've been a horror fan since 8 years old, when I watched American Werewolf in London. I'm a massive fan of 80s and 90s horror movies, but i do try and keep up with new releases. I love reading. My favourites are John Connolly, Richard Laymon and Stephen King.

Hi, I'm Cody! I'm a HUGE horror fiction fan, but love (almost) every other genre as well. I'm a Booklikes regular, but decided to give Goodreads a shot. I'm not leaving BL. Just wanted to try this site out! :) I'm still feeling my way around this place. Add me if you'd like!
Hi everyone! I'm Jessica, and I don't profess to be Horror Aficionado, but I do LOVE it so so much. I can't wait to participate in some awesome reads with all of you!
Preeti wrote: "Hi Everyone - I recently fell in love with horror. Right now, I'm especially into zombies, the occult, and Japanese folklore. I just joined GR and saw HA. I think that this is the biggest and most ..."I believe that it is, Preeti. (It's certainly the BEST, but, of course, that's a subjective opinion.) Welcome to HA!
Hi Duncan,This is an excellent site for horror. I just checked your book list, and you may like to read
The Library at Mount Char which I enjoyed a lot. My Review is here.
Hello! I'm Scott, I'm a long time Horror reader trying to find more authors now that I've read most of King's stuff. I have good faith in this group, now that I see the current reading group books - The Troop and Devil's Rock are both already on my list, and The Terror is one of my all time favorites.
Welcome to HA, Louisa! Check out our list of Best Horror Books, under the section "Lists and Challenges."
Hey there. I am a horror fan from Austin. I am new to GR, and especially groups. I went straight to the horror section and found you guys. I'm always looking to talk about the scares, and looking for recommendations. I am a writer myself, though I promise not to annoy you with self promotion. Hopefully I will meet a few people, and have a few good discussions. Cheers.
Hi All,My name is Josh and I am new to the group. i would really like some friends to discuss books as I only have a small amount on the site, even though I have been a member for a while :(. I generally like sci-fi and Fantasy novels, Horror/Thriller novels, and I have been diving into a lot of the classics. Right now I am reading 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King, since it falls into Horror and Classic. Again, hit me up and I will gladly discuss with you our favorite books!!!
Louisa wrote: "Hi, I'm a horror/thriller fan and I was looking for some new books to read; any suggestions?"You're already reading one of my all time favorites, It. So there's that. :)
A favorite 'round these parts is Robert McCammon's Boy's Life. No end of folks who'll champion that one (including me).
If you want to read some classic stuff that often gets referenced in a great many other horror novels, the work of H. P. Lovecraft will educate you whenever you see references to the Cthulhu mythos. He's mostly known for his short fiction, like The Call of Cthulhu and a favorite of mine, The Color Out of Space, both of which you could probably find online if you want a taste of his work.
If you like haunted house novels, one of the best is Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House.
That should be enough to get you started. :)
Ok, I'm old, been here a while, just haven't been here in a while...probably cause I am hiding under your bed or in your closet...hope that's ok...I haven't tried on any of your clothes or read any of your questionable reading material hiding under your bed...or was that just your dirty laundry I was seeing :) So, I'm a haunter from the west coast, love horror, but read all types of stuff. Recently I've been reading everything I can find by Toby Tate and well I think I found everything that Amazon has to offer by him. Any Jeff Strand junkies in here? Comic books, manga...whats up!! ??
Steven wrote: "Ok, I'm old, been here a while, just haven't been here in a while...probably cause I am hiding under your bed or in your closet...hope that's ok...I haven't tried on any of your clothes or read any..."Hello, Steven, and welcome to HA!
I love Jeff Strand and have read a few of Toby Tate's books as well. Right now, I'm making my way through the Preacher and the Sandman series' of graphic novels. :)
You'll find a bit of everything around here.

From the classics I do enjoy Poe and Lovecraft, though I have not had much experience with anyone more contemporary than Stephen King (and I have only read the Dark Towe..."
For many of us, myself included, Stephen King was our first venture into the macabre and let's be honest, you could do a lot worse than pick up anything that King has written and start from there. But, you didn't join Horror Afficionados to throw a dart at a dartboard, did you?
So, if you wanted to start with King and his horror offerings, his older works are generally considered his best. From your description of your tastes, I'd say that 'Salem's Lot, The Shining, or The Stand would all be great ones to cut your teeth on.
If you're wanting to venture out from King and still keep a toe in the classics with more of an emphasis on story and atmosphere rather than the red stuff, I'd suggest Robert McCammon's Usher's Passing, especially if you enjoy Poe.
If you're in the mood for a multi-layered haunted tale that reads more like literature, Peter Straub's Ghost Story is considered the finest in many circles.
If you'd like to try a more modern author that is pumping out quality atmospheric horror as we speak, I'd recommend Greg F. Gifune. My favorites of his are The Rain Dancers and Rogue.
The list is endless and I'm sure others on here would be happy to give you their interpretations of what is good horror. Horror Afficionados is a great site on Goodreads where you'll meet so many knowledgable fans and authors on here too. Have a blast and be prepared to watch your shelves swell to maximum capacity with all the recommendations. The worst part of it is finding the time to read them all!
