Kai isn’t rude or mean to others unless provoked. If you provoke her or catch her in a foul mood, watch out. She might not react right away, but she eventually will. She tends to dwell on things for a bit, then forgives. Kai just has a hard time forgetting.

Kai has a unique outlook and perspective when she thinks, and is creative in just about everything. She is smart and a quick thinker, which is why some people originally might think she’s a daughter of Athena. Kai has a horrible temper, but tends to bottle up her anger until she has to release it, which comes in many forms. She tries her best to get away from people before this happens, but she sometimes doesn’t. Kai often goes to the water for a sense of clarity. It is one of the only things that clears her mind.

Appearance

Overview: Kai is 5’4”, weighing 119 pounds. She has blue hair, originally a raven black. She has blue eyes that sometimes appear gray. Kai has a scar from mid- thigh to her ankle on her left leg. She has more of a deeper voice, but more on the average side. She doesn’t have a high voice.

History
Kai’s mother Beth had gotten pregnant at the young age of eighteen. She always had a pure love for the ocean. She found it beautiful, mysterious, and purely fascinating. Beth had just been accepted into her top choice college when she met him- Kai’s father. They spent a night together and went their separate ways when Beth got a surprise- Kai! Beth didn’t know exactly what to do. Her parents would be furious and practically disown her, so Beth went to college. She hadn’t told her parents where she was going yet. Beth packed up and left, leaving her home so she could keep her child. For the first few years of Kai’s life, their small family was pretty poor. Beth was still in college, and had two jobs. Beth had a difficult time balancing everything, between work, school, and her daughter, but she got through it. Kai was often watched by several of her mother’s friends while Beth was working or at class. Kai didn’t enjoy not having her parents around, and she didn’t fully comprehend why they weren’t around, her being too young to understand.

When Kai was five years old she was at the store with her mother. She was trailing behind, looking at the toys longingly. She knew not to ask, but there’s no harm in looking, right? Well a man came up behind her and clasped a hand on her mouth. He ran out of the store with Kai kicking and putting up a fight. Her kidnapper threw her into the trunk of a car, hitting her head in the process. Kai was knocked unconscious. She woke up with a groan, rubbing the bruising that had formed on her head. She widened her eyes as she remembered what happened, then began to hear noises coming from the outside of the trunk. Kai tucked into a ball, shaking from fear. Her eyes were wide as she heard a fight occurring. She heard yells, then silence. She scooted to the back of the trunk as she heard it being unlocked. A man opened the trunk, smiling at her. Kai began to cry from fear. The compassionate man picked her up into his arms while she just clung to him, still shaking.
She pulled back and wiped her eyes. “Who are you?” she asked, sniffling.
The man just smiled at her. “You’re safe now. I know your mother, Kailani,” he told her.
Kai brightened up at the mention of her mom. “Do I get to see mommy soon?” she asked hopefully.
“Yes, my dear,” he replied. Poseidon set her down onto the road. He crouched down beside her, talking gently to her. “This road will take you straight to a police station. Continue down the road and tell the kind people your name and your mother’s phone number. She must be worried sick. Could you give these to her please?” Her father asked. Kai nodded.
“Why does this one have my name on it?” she asked curiously.
“Well that’s meant for when you’re a bit older. You see, there are some things you need to know then. The other letter is for Beth, your mom. It will explain some things she has to know. Promise you won’t lose them?” Poseidon asked, still smiling.
“I promise,” Kai agreed, wrapping her pinkie finger around his. With a little push she started down the road quickly, and turned back. “Will I see you again?” she asked hopefully.
Poseidon smiled at his daughter, sadness in his eyes. “Maybe. But I will always watch over you,” he promised.
Kai turned back and went to the police station where they called her frantic mother, Beth.

After this experience, Beth and Kai grew closer. She had finished college and searched for a job. Beth finally found a position as a marine biologist, and they lived comfortably from then on. Kai loved living on the open sea. The only downside was that Beth and Kai had to share a room. But Kai didn’t mind- she got along well with her mother. Since that experience when she was five, Kai felt like she was being protected and watched. She didn’t know exactly how to explain it. Beth and Kai, as the traveled the seas were never caught in the middle of a huge storm. Sure there were some, but very few. Kai grew up with a passion for the ocean, like her parents. Beth and the other crew members got nervous when Kai swam in the open ocean. When Kai was seven she discovered her ability to communicate with the creatures of the sea in her mind. She hid this from everyone, thinking that the others would see her as a freak. Kai was homeschooled practically all her life, rarely around other children. When she was nine, she discovered her love for photography. Her mother gave her an underwater camera, and from then on Kai’s walls were plastered with photos of sea creatures, sunsets, the ocean or her mother. Kai’s mother and her colleagues would travel around the worlds, observing the ocean. They would stop everywhere around the world, and she would always buy a souvenir. This is the reason why monsters never found her. Beth and Kai were always on the move.

Kai was growing up, and Beth was afraid. She had read the letter Poseidon had wrote for her, stashing Kai’s away until the time would come to part. Beth knew that once her daughter entered Camp Half Blood, she most likely wouldn’t be able to see her again. For this reason, Beth wasn’t planning on telling Kai until something bad happened, like a monster attack. Beth was cherishing the days, never knowing which would be the last. Kai was growing up a pretty emotionally stable child, all except for her temper. Beth began teaching her daughter to fight and channel her energy. She soon surpassed her mother in fighting, learning much. Kai was looking for her mother’s binoculars one day, looking through Beth’s bins. Well she never did find the binoculars, but did find a letter addressed to her. She carefully opened it when she was alone.

My dearest Kailani,
I’d first like to introduce myself. I am your father, Poseidon. I know your mother has given you this and I hope to be able to explain what she cannot. Your mother most likely has already explained everything, but if not, continue to read this. This is vital information that you must use to survive.

Kailani, you are what they call a half-blood. Half human from your mother, and half god from me. Creatures may find you on your journey to camp, and you must know how to fight or you will not survive. I hope you are still around to read this. Please use the fighting spirit I know you have. It will help you through the darkest of times. Now that you know your true heritage, you must be quick. Once you have knowledge of this, there is only so much time. Go with haste to Camp Half Blood or I fear your life will be in peril. I will protect you as best I can, but I can only do so much. Leave now to Long Island, New York. There you will find Camp Half Blood. As soon as you cross the border, you will be safe. I love you daughter, and wish you the best.
Your father,
Poseidon

Kailani ran over to her mother. “Is this true?” she asked, wide eyed.
Beth looked at her daughter with tears in her eyes. “Where did you get that?” she whispered, clearly upset.
“I.. I found it. It was addressed to me,” she pointed out.
“Kailani..” Beth trailed off. “We need to go. Now.” They were in New York Harbor, getting more supplies. Beth gave a quick goodbye to her friends and gave Kai five minutes to pack. Kailani shoved her clothes, some of her pictures, her box of makeup and her shower bag into a duffel. She grabbed a box of sentimental things too. She had her Sai’s concealed while her sword was in her bag. They quickly went to the shore and tied the boat. Beth pulled Kailani along. Beth told the man to drive, giving him an address of a house a little outside of the camp. They drove with haste, getting there about half an hour after Kai had read the letter. Beth and Kai said their goodbyes. Beth went back to the taxi and drove away, crying. Kai had her duffel bag, a bit shocked about all that had happened. She entered into camp, only days after her birthday. And now the present will occur and the future will unfold, becoming the past.

But don't think that's going to stop her from trying to find out in other ways. Never gives up and is determined in everything she does. She tries to act strong most of the time, but if you somehow offend or hurt her, it'll take some serious work to get her to forgive you. Hurt her friends, and you'd better sleep with one eye open. She always wants to be involved in something, and it's a miracle if you get her to sit still.

Childhood: Lived with her father, Nathan Waldrop, until she was 14. He was usually away on business, but to his credit stayed in touch a lot more than would have been expected. Marley's older brother, Woodrow, took care of her most of the time. For a while they had nannies, but since they never liked them and enjoyed getting rid of them, their dad just gave up when Wood turned 16. He was her example growing up, and was a very good one at that. Woodrow's mother died when he was three. They lived in a pretty big two-story house, a result of their father's job. Her father never really understood her and her interests. Whenever he was home, Nathan tried to do fun things with his children and did his best to understand them. Wood protected Marley in school, as almost all of the boys liked her, and she only had one close friend, Dylan. Although they weren't close, she loved her dad very much, and her brother more than anyone.
Teen Years: Marley had only just started her freshman year in high school before being taken to Camp Half-Blood. A keeper in her school found her and there wasn't much trouble getting her to Camp except convincing her brother. She goes home for birthdays and still hangs out with Dylan about once every other month.

::Description::
Personality:
Wynter has always been seen as a strange girl. She doesn't speak much to others, but can often be seen whispering to herself as though she's having a conversation with someone that isn't there. She is quiet and a loner, usually keeping her distance from crowds and having one friend around, if any at all. This part of her personality can often make her seem gloomy or lonely, yet if you try to talk to her, she will often push you away anyways. She prefers being alone, mostly because she enjoys being able to think, and she always does that best in silence.

For a more realistic version of her personality, Wynter is very intelligent yet also quite shy. She spends most of her time reading alone, or studying maps and other things. She has an incredible ability of being able to take a random fact or story she learned about from the depths of her mind and telling it perfectly to the point to whoever's listening. People sometimes call this having a photographic memory, and it is unclear if that is what she really has or if she is just that smart. Wynter is also very clever and witty, and can come up with a plan to fix a problem and take herself away from danger almost immediately. She's never been much of a fighter, but she can always tell others how to win.

It’s obvious that Wynter is happiest when she can have her dragon, Cryzz with her, or when the ability of possibly visiting her father comes up. While Cryzz is not truly a dragon, rather a demon taken the form of such a creature created by her father, Wynter loves him will more passion than she has ever loved anyone or anything. This is not simply because he is her pet, but also because of what he represents. Her father presented Cryzz to her when he was merely a glossy red and black egg at a time in her life that she was terribly lonely and depressed. Now she looks at her baby dragon and knows that someone is watching out for her, caring for her, loving her. She takes him as a sign that she is not alone in the world. Wynter, unlike many Demi-gods, has a strong connection with her father, Hades, and many know it. She can ask him for anything and he will give it to her, though she rarely takes advantage of this. Hades has become very defensive and protective of his daughter, as she is one of his only children that does not reject him. Wynter does not think her father is a bad man, only a good man who has made some bad choices, just as everyone does. While many think it strange for her to be so close to the God of the Underworld, despite him being her father, she doesn’t care. She knows who she loves and who loves her and is happy for that and just that.

Strengths: Wynter is incredibly intelligent, and she knows it. She uses her wits and cleverness to her and her friend’s advantage. She seems to always have a way out or a way to win. She is also very dedicated and puts all of herself into the simplest of tasks, causing the product—whatever it may be—to come out as perfect as possible. She also has a pet dragon who is loyal to her and only her and she knows how to use him to her advantage as well as her wits.
Weaknesses: Wynter can grow much too attached to people or things, as she feels she has too little in the world not to grasp that what she wants or needs. She is also not a fabulous fighter. She knows how to hold a sword in her hand, but that’s about it. This is when her dragon tends to come in handy.
Fears: Losing Cryzz, losing her connection with her father.
Goals: To expand her knowledge base even further, to raise Cryzz to be strong and powerful so she no longer has to defend herself.
Likes:
Spending time with Cryzz
Visiting her father
Reading, both to herself and to Cryzz
Dislikes:
Fighting
Training
Large crowds

::Background::
Childhood:
Wynter and her twin brother Wesley were born early morning on December 27th, 1999 to a young Elizabeth Harlem and a handsomely disguised Hades. While the twins were a surprise to her and unwanted at the time in her life, Elizabeth loved them more than anything. She did not know the man she conceived the two with until after they were born and Hades visited her again, explaining to her what would happen when the twins reached the correct age.

Elizabeth raised the two on her own for four long, rough years. She loved her children and told them both that they were very special every day. But she knew she could not keep raising them on her own while she worked two full time and one part time jobs. So she began to open herself up to dating again. Most of them men ran as soon as she said “twin four-year-olds”, but she was determined to give her babies a better life.

Finally, she met a young man named Thomas Underwood and about a year later the two were wed. Elizabeth moved in with her new husband with Wynter and Wesley. Tom had two children of his own, two girls named Beth and Leslie, ages eight and eleven respectively. The family was somewhat happy, though the children didn’t get along too much because of their age difference.

When Wynter and Wesley were seven, a flock of harpies sniffed them out. Due to there being two of them and being children of one of the Big Three, it was not hard to find them. And finally, Hades’s ability to keep them hidden from monsters failed. Wynter was inside the house, reading a 12th grade level book as was normal for her, while her brother played outside with his mother. In a matter of seconds, Wesley was killed by the harpies and their mother badly injured from her struggle to defend him from something she couldn’t see. Wynter watched the entire thing from inside on the couch, but couldn’t bring herself to run to their aid. What could she do at age seven?

A funeral was held for Wesley a few weeks later, one that Wynter refused to attend. She sat by her mother’s side day and night at the hospital. What was seen as an untreatable sickness by the mortals, she knew was an unrecoverable wound. About a month after the funeral, Elizabeth passed away and Wynter was left with her step-family.

Now Wynter had never liked her step-sisters and she could’ve cared less for Tom. She didn’t really have a reason other than the fact that they bothered her. She wanted to sit inside all day and read or surf the web, or simply stare out the window. This was quickly thought to be signs of depression to Tom and he sought treatment for his step-daughter.

Teen Years:
After three years of constantly failing therapy, Tom decided to pull her out of it. He suddenly realized he no longer wanted to spend money on something that obviously wasn’t working for a step-daughter that he really wanted nothing to do with. Leslie was getting ready to go to college and never bothered with Wynter. Beth, on the other hand, mocked her strange step-sister for her ghostly attitude and teased her about being more normal. Every time, Wynter’s response to this was, ”But I’m not normal, I’m special,”, repeating what her mother had told her every day before she died.

The young Demi-god didn’t have a fabulous school life either. Friends were non-existent and bullies were plentiful. While she didn’t care what others thought of her, their words still hurt. And so when she was thirteen, Wynter decided to run away. She was smart about it, taking what money was left to her in her mother’s will and everything she might possibly need to stay alive. If any thirteen year old was going to live on her own, it would be the insanely intelligent daughter of Hades.

She did pretty well for a while, skipping out on school as she knew she didn’t really need it, staying in motel rooms and working where she could to make the cash she needed. While she wasn’t likable by many others, she was smart and useful, making many companies and restaurants want her to work for them.

After a year on her own, Hades sent his daughter a note along with a dark red and smoke-colored dragon egg. He explained to her who she was and that if she ever needed anything, to simply call his name and he’d be there for her. He’d been watching over her since Wesley had died and had grown to care for his clever daughter. He wanted her to make it to Camp Half-Blood when she was ready and until then he wanted her to be alive. The dragon egg he’d formed from a demon and had designed to hatch in a year’s time, until then hiding Wynter’s scent from monsters. Wynter was so excited to know the truth about her father. While she’d known for a long time that she was special, even all her wits could not have told her she was a Demi-god.

Winter Shae Harlem, Continued

The egg’s scent kept her safe for a year, and hatched when Wynter was fifteen. She named him Cryzz for the sound he kept making with his mouth as he begged for food. She fed him any meat she could get her hands on, and kept him hidden from mortals best she could. Cryzz grew to love his new mother and became very protective of her even at his young age. His demon scent still kept her hidden from most monsters, yet when the occasional one tracked her down he scared them off, despite being barely larger than a cat. Hades had enchanted the dragon to grow at a very slow pace so that he would always be there for Wynter.

When Wynter turned sixteen, Hades decided it was time for his daughter to be taken to Camp. He urged the leaders there to send a Satyr for her, and him being the God of the Underworld and all, they couldn’t really refuse. A Satyr was sent to fetch Wynter and, after nearly being bitten to death by a baby Cryzz, took her back to Camp. The idea of having a dragon with her was concerning for many of the leaders, but she told them she would not stay if he could not. And they, knowing Hades’s wrath should they have kicked her out, let them both stay.
