message 17: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (finegael) | 283 comments I'll post Free Space as they come up. We've all played before, but as a refresher, here are the rules for the Free Space...

To get free space credit, each team member must pick a book from one of these options:

1. A Cozy Mystery Featured Author of the Month: Any month can be used while the game is in play

OR

2. A book off of the group's bookshelf: Any theme; no restriction - books added at any time may be chosen

Be sure to post on your team's thread:
• which book you chose for FREE SPACE credit
• which of the three options above you chose to pick your book
• your rating and your review.

Once all members of your team have posted the above information, your team will get "a stamp" in the FREE SPACE!

Members don't have to pick and read a book right away, they can, but it's not required. This is not a team read, each member chooses their own book TBR for their team's free space credit. You can choose which book to read and when to read it, but no team will get free space credit until all members have read, rated & reviewed a book chosen from one those options.

Death Crosses the Border Death Crosses the Border (Margo Simon, #2) by Janice Steinberg
2 stars (it was ok)
finished 26 August

Rev. Zeke is taking Margo, a reporter with NPR in San Diego, across the border to Mexico so that Margo can interview workers in the factories about their conditions. Rev. Zeke regularly travels to Mexico and ministers to the workers. When they visit, someone throws a rock at the car, injuring Rev. Zeke. Back in San Diego, Margo gets some disturbing news about Rev. Zeke, and travels back to Mexico to solve what turns out to be several mysteries and a couple of red herrings thrown in to fool us readers.

This book was written in 1995 and feels very dated. References to Joni Mitchell, Ronald Regan, and several events kept this book from resonating with me. I also found some parts of the book to actually detract from the story line...so 2 stars only.

Queen of Hearts, by Rhys Bowen
Queen of Hearts (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries, #8) by Rhys Bowen

Georgie (Lady Georgiana Rannoch, 35th in line for the British throne) is off to America accompanying her mother, actress Claire Daniels, who is headed to Reno for a quickie divorce. Their Atlantic crossing is marred by a jewel thief and a possible murder that only Georgie witnesses. Danger follows them when they hit America and head to Hollywood so Claire can star in Cy Goldman’s next movie. Murder and mayhem ensue.

I adored this 1930’s era story. The first part of the book took place on the transatlantic voyage where most of the glamorous characters meet. Then it is on to Beverly Hills and the Hollywood movie set. The final part of the story takes place at a house party at a Malibu castle (think Hearst Castle with a Hearst-type millionaire, an unexpected wife and a mistress to boot). It was a fun, dazzling romp across the two continents where Wallis Simpson and Charlie Chaplin are part of the group. I had so much fun reading this story and loved the characters.

An Island of Illusions
An Island of Illusions (A Sarah Woods Mystery # 3) by Jennifer L. Jennings
An Island of Illusions finds our budding sleuth immersed in the tropical splendor of Oahu. However, what begins as an island getaway for Sarah quickly morphs into a desperate search for the missing infant of a wealthy Boston family. Just when the detectives believe they’ve made a breakthrough in the case, a shocking death shakes their investigation to the core. With the only witness gone, will the team ever discover the truth behind the abduction?

I really liked this book because I found the main character Sarah relatable. The book was a little slow in the beginning but once it picked up I could not put it down. The book kept me guessing to the end and that is important to me in a mystery. It was nice picking a book up that is not the first in the series and feeling completely lost. I will be reading the rest of the books in the series.

If Fried Chicken Could Fly (Gram’s Country Cooking School Mystery #1) by Paige Shelton
3 stars
I am on the fence about this book so I gave it 3 stars. I had a very hard time getting into it & I really didn't like any of the characters. But I did like reading about the cooking school & the recipes. & I did get more into the book near the end. I'm not sure if i'll read the 2nd book in the series. If I do it will be because I'm curious about the recipes.

Fudging the Books Fudging the Books by Daryl Wood Gerber
4 stars
Finished 31 August

Note - I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway - pretty timely for BINGO

It's Pirate Week in Crystal Cove and the Cookbook Nook is in full celebration. There's some mischief afoot matey as the pirate's pot of dubloons keep going missing. That's important to the celebration of Pirate Week. But that's not all... This book has murder, infidelity, romance, cats (of course), vandalism, you name it, this book has it. It's all woven together well and the characters are pretty good. Bailey makes me crazy but otherwise the characters all seemed like folks you might run into in a small town. Add to that there are a couple of recipes I might actually try. And at the end, the title of the book actually makes sense! Will probably read subsequent installments.

This looks like a fun book! I haven't read any of this series but am putting it on the list.

The quality time, car dealership or no, sounds great! Did you get a new car to go along with all of your read pages? That's what I need as my reading time has been sparse this week. I am trying to finish up my free space book and get onto the bakery selection. I am looking forward to a long holiday weekend of reading.

(3.5 stars)
Finished date (9/4/15)

Calamity Jane is exactly that, a hilarious adventure into the depths of her unfortunate calamity. This books is a great "Fun Funny Read". I could not put it down, I just wish it was a bit more serious & less involvement of family friends & the whole town in the hopes of saving the day. The long stolen antique gnome is a vivid lively character, the life of the story. This book even offers a little love amidst all the ridiculously unfortunate chaos !!! Calamity Jayne ( Tressa) & Rick the Ranger end up together, what a great unpredictable book !!!
