Zulfiya (ztrotter) This is the schedule for our next big read, and it is very much a Japanese read with its quirkiness, darkness, unwillingness to fit into one specific genre, and hopefully, full of reading FUN.

My idea is to start on March 10, but if you think you need more time, I will be more than happy to wait. I also decided to forgo the break. From my experience, breaks are usually conducive to losing readers rather than giving them a chance to catch up. It is only a suggestion, and if you think we need a break, we can have one after book III

03/10 - Book I, Chapters 1-5
03/17 - Book I, Chapters 6-10
03/24 - Book I, Chapters 11-13/ Book II, Chapters 1 and 2
03/31 - Book II, Chapters 3-7
04/07 - Book II, Chapters 8-12
04/14 - Book II, Chapters 13-16

A Potential Break ???
04/21 - Book III, Chapters 1-9
04/28 - Book III, Chapters 10-19
05/05 - Book III, Chapters 20-29
05/12 - Book III, Chapters 30-39

As usual, feel free to post your opinions and do not forget to sign in.

Linda | 1425 comments I'm looking forward to this read! My opinion on the Break Week is that we don't need one, especially since each week is only ~40 pages or so. Perhaps when week 6 comes around we can ask if people need a break or not. I have not read any Murakami so I don't know how easy or difficult his writing is.

Michelle (michelle8731) I just ordered my copy! I'll be waiting impatiently for it to arrive on Thursday! :)

Deana (ablotial) My copy got delayed by the winter storm, but should arrive before the weekend :) Looking forward to this one!

Miriam I am looking forward to reading this book with you guys. I've been wanting to read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle for awhile now,it's been sitting on my shelf for a month now, and am looking forward to reading it with other people and hearing their thoughts and ideas on it!

Sujit Kolke What a coincidence that I am midway through this book. Would be great to take part in the discussion.

Zulfiya (ztrotter) I hope so:-) I am going to send a message to all members that a new read is on the way.

Deana (ablotial) So I am going to express a little concern over the schedule. I just marked up my book with sticky notes to mark each week's reading, and I notice that the sections at the beginning of the book (parts I and II) are MUCH longer (about twice as long) than the sections in part III. I see that you tried to do it by number of chapters, but the chapters in the second half are quite short.

I feel like when we get close to the end people are willing to read more at once and they end up reading ahead. Bit maybe I am wrong.

In my book at least, the first three sections are:
63 pages, 58 pages, 70 pages.

Whereas the first four sections of part III are
38, 42, 32, 30 ... the last section is only 18 pages.

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Deana, thank you for your input. I purchased an audiobook and looked inside the book on amazon for a content. Would you mind helping me and changing the schedule because you have a physical book. Instead of changing the beginning, how about changing the final chapters and recombining them? It will also give us a chance to finish it quicker.

Good catch! When I said "40 pages" I didn't actually look at the pages, but just averaged the pages by the number of sections there were.

I agree, towards the end I think many people will read quicker, and I am one of them. :)

Deana (ablotial) I will make a suggestion for the post-break sections tomorrow morning. Hopefully that is OK. We have a while before we get there, anyway.

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Thank you!

Lisa (lisadannatt) | 105 comments Exciting?

Deana (ablotial) I think I will recommend doing them in chunks of 10 (well, 9 on the first one, no chapter 0).

Part III, ch 1-9: 74pp
Part III, ch 10-19: 74pp
Part III, ch 20-29: 64pp
Part III, ch 30-39(end): 73pp

Seem reasonable?

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Thank you. It looks great! I will update ASAP.

Glynis (missgmad) | 0 comments Haven't checked in for a while. This looks good and it starts today! A stroke of luck. Plus I like Murakami :)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) I will open the discussion thread later this evening after my classes and a pile of papers that I have to grade. The book is typical Murakami - mystery upon weirdness and thoroughly enjoyable :-)

Zulfiya (ztrotter) Jut post here in this thread or here

saying that you want to participate. Nothing special. it is all informal, but with the hope that people will honor their word and will participate.

Rebecca (inexplicablybookish) Hmm, I am late to the game, but I was just thinking of picking this book up as my next read. I was so excited to see this group was reading it!

I think I might treat myself to the Kindle version and see if I can catch up :)
