Okay, here is all I remember:
1. The protagonist is a little girl called Adelaide.
2. She had a coloured friend, more or less the same age, who believes in voodoo.
3. Her mother is dead. Her father is too. She was born in Africa or Brazil or somewhere where her father owned a plantation or colonies.
4. She lives with her two unmarried aunts. Another aunt is married. After Adelaide's birth, she was not happy with her marriage. There was a big catastrophe or something soon after.
5. Younger of the two aunts she lives with was originally wooed by her father.
6. Her mother was very full of herself. Adelaide would imagine being in her mother's shoes. She had a doll(pretty one) whom she called mother.
7. One of her unmarried aunts die at the end.
8. The name of the book had "Secret". I'm speculating it was "Secret Lives" but I don't remember.
