Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 4472 comments It was a beautiful day here today. We were able to have the windows open for air without worrying that the degus and gerbils would get too cold, and the dog was constantly asking to go outside in our little yard. Luckily my sleep pattern worked so that I was awake for most of the day to enjoy it.

Rose (The_Calm_Reader) (roselittlebookowl75) | 1372 comments @Jenny I know right! From 80 degrees to snow & cold....that is just so wrong!

Jenn This is a little off subject for the minute but I have to ask: anyone that has a Nook, have you had any problems getting into B&N ? I can't get in to my account and my battery on my nook dies so fast even off wi-fi so I've just been using my kindle mostly.

@ Jenn--I have had no problem getting into B&N--maybe try a different browser? I never use my Nook anymore, I just read the books off of my phone (Samsung Galaxy S3)

@Oda-- It finally feels like spring here!! YAY! Not been too bad, ready for it to stay warmer though! Supposed to be in the 60s and 70s F all week, so that's good!

Got my hair cut today. Took of 10 INCHES!! Holy crap, no idea it was getting that long!

Kaylani (cityeclectics) | 297 comments I'm not totally okay. Hopefully I can perk up a bit and get back to doing some normal people stuff soon. But I almost died from anaphylaxis and I have had really low lung function for a long time. They are having a hard time figuring out what is causing it but I keep going low with oxygen with a lot of movement or anything strenuous. I feel sort of like a prisoner in my home and body and I keep getting worse. And lots of stupid 'you're too young for x y z'

Yes. I'm 27. I *shouldn't* have all these health issues that are mostly 'older people' things. But lets be real. I do. Its lab and test and time proven so just do something and shut up about arbitrary numbers when it comes to me declining. Is it normal!? No. But you sitting on your ass and saying 'you're too young for this' isn't helping. I saw a nurse practitioner on friday that basically laughed at the notion I had low lung function without even looking at my chart or pulmonology visit. I wanted to scream. If I had the lung function I probably would have.

Oh, Kaylani, I'm so so sorry :( Anyone can be sick at any age. Believe me, I know! You poor thing! I'm sorry things feel really low right now. People who say you are too young for this affliction are idiots. Nuff said. Do you have someone to advocate for you? A parent, or other relative, or close friend? I would suggest if you do, you get them to come with you to your appointments. When you are sick, its hard to stick up for your rights as a patient, and sometimes you need someone else there to help you. Again, I know this from experience. Its sad, but there are a lot of people in the healthcare field that forget that their business is people.

And if you need to vent about anything, feel free to shoot me a message :) I really do not mind at all! *hugs*

message 221: by Kaylani (new)

Kaylani (cityeclectics) | 297 comments Thanks Jenny. I have a lot of doctors who would have told her off had they heard her attitude. It is part of the reason I didn't want to see her because I'd never met her before and people assume I have to be making it up because I have so much going on.

All my main systems are messed up, and its hard because when my lungs and heart affect my already poor vision I really don't have hardly anything I can do.

I have some really good doctors on my side and I am super glad that I will be seeing another person at the clinic that actually listens to me on Tuesday. I just really wish I would have had some resolve from the person I saw Friday. I know this weekend would be going better but there isn't much I can do.

One good thing is I have a lot of health professionals willing to write letters and move ass if I need to. I might go to most of my appointments alone but if they don't go well and there isn't resolution, they will move ass, tell those people what they did wrong and aren't willing to turn someone in even if they are a close co-worker.

I just have to hang in there until Tuesday and hopefully* the doctor and I can come up with a solution to make it to the pulmonolgy appointment that had to be cancelled because my medical ride decided they could cancel for no reason like an hour before the appointment.

I wish I could say something comforting, but I know from personal experience that no words can help. I am sorry you have to deal with such poor health though, and even more sorry you have to deal with people who wear blinkers and think only the old have to deal with serious health issues!

Kaylani, this made me literally laugh out loud. Your health issues are certainly not funny but your commentary on it sure was! Seriously, your life sucks. You have a great attitude about it though, in that you're highly impatient with these idiots who can't seem to figure it out. Keep after them! I'll be praying for you (that's what I do, I'm a pastor's wife, yada yada yada) for healing. Be prepared to feel better soon. : )

In other news, I just wanted to scream and shout about how awesome our moderators are in this group. I've been MIA lately with life here and BookTube - and even though I drop in and out I am just amazed at how consistent and encouraging Jenny and Karen are. I mean, seriously. Wow. Jenny, how you keep up with everything (4 kids, life, job, injured hubby who is probably better by now) is really something. Same with you Karen - I know you're buried under running your own company (again, no small feat).

So I just wanted to get on my soapbox for a minute and yell about how awesome I think you both are. Everybody pay attention now and may I have some applause please? Thank you. Virtual drinks all around and a toast to our wonderful mods, Jenny and Karen. You ladies are amazing. Let's all go to Hawaii and see Adele and David, shall we?

Jen, Karen and I were going to talk to you in June about that ;)

THANK YOU so so much, Jen, you are so super sweet! How do I keep up with everything? I'm honestly not sure, its just habit I think. My life has always been crazy busy! Of course there are times I can't keep up with everything. I am not perfect, and do fail on occasion. And then I beat myself up for it, so it doesn't happen that often :)

And as for the injured hubby--he's still healing. He's mostly back to normal, but his foot is still purple and black. Seriously, you guys, I have never seen a foot look so gross. I kept pushing for him to go to the doctor, but he never did. He started walking on it okay, so I dropped it. His toes are black. His whole darn foot and ankle are bruised--its pretty nasty looking and seriously makes my heart hurt just to look at it!

He's been sleeping on the couch, to keep it propped up. I'm also a very restless sleeper, so I'm worried I might kick it in my sleep. Its funny, because during the day I get soooo annoyed with him (I can only handle so much whining) but then I night I really miss him. :( I have not been sleeping well at all.

And in other news, Tessa is home from school for awhile--she has the chicken pox. Poor kid!

We have had horrible weather in the midwest, but the worst has been these insanely strong winds--seriously, they about blow you over! A few days ago, something hit our screen door in the middle of the night, and we woke up to shattered glass all over the deck. That was fun to clean up! And guess who got to do it? Darryl definitely isn't able to!

Okay, that was a lot of whining on my part, sorry you guys! On the positive, I have am off for a 4 day weekend this weekend for my birthday!!!! Off from Sat-Tues. And Monday (my bday) its Cinco de Mayo--which means I can go out and have me a nice big margarita since I don't work the next day ;)

Hey girl you just whine away - and here I thought I was the only one feeling like I live in Kansas Indiana with all this wind. Jeesh! Thank you April, you can blow right out of here as of this minute.

I can't believe he hasn't gone to the doctor. Put him in the car and take him right now. He's icing it, isn't he? What a mess. And chicken pox? Was she not vaccinated for that? I can't remember when they started doing it - but Makaela is 18 and never had it because she got the shots.

Anyway . . . go have a fantastic birthday! 29, right? Have a margarita for me too, and we will think wonderful thoughts about the margaritas to come in June. Aaaahhhh . . . looking SO forward to that . . .

I got chicken pox after being vaccinated against it too. Luckily for me I was really young and don't really remember it, though I'm sure it was no fun for my Mam with me being so young.

I think your hubby should get that foot looked at before he ends up losing it or something!

message 234: by Kaylani (new)

Kaylani (cityeclectics) | 297 comments Thank you for all the well wishes.

Jen: If I didn't have humor I wouldn't be able to make it some days.

I saw a good doctor today. One I really like. I found out why the official yes or no on Multiple Sclerosis was delayed until September, its because they think my lung problem is potentially much worse. I found out that they are only one lung test away from diagnosing late onset cystic fibrosis.

I told the doctor I saw today I think my lungs and heart are trying to kill me... and she said 'They are trying to kill you, and they are capable of it too, which is why we are going to fight to not have that happen, and if you start to die here we are going to shove you in (Friday Doctor's) office and blame it on her :) "

That's why I love her. She can always make me giggle and take the pressure off when she sees on my face I just need a bit of a mental break.

They are doing a trial of medication to see what kind of affect it has. I have a special lung test May 14th, May 22nd I have another lung test and see the pulmonologist and possibly get sent to the cystic fibrosis clinic.

The good thing is I have an awesome friend. Someone was trying to 'one-up' my physical health issues when they just randomly overheard a friend and I talking in the community room of my assisted living, and I told him "I don't play that 'who's more sick game' it usually ends in other people crying because they feel guilty for trying to compete and your 'pre-diabetes' isn't going to rank up there with any of my even mild health issues.'

And my friend started giggling and made it sound like a game show title... 'NOW ITS TIME FOR THE WHO IS MORE SICK GAME.... :)

He listened to me bitch for a long time and it was just really nice because I just needed to decompress.

Right now I'm poking my service cat and trying to convince him I'm not going to die from low blood glucose in the time it takes to finish typing this, even though he is very convinced.

Also the meds for my eyes are helping a bit and I might be able to read more a bit in a day or two which will help a lot of stress :)

Hey.
Thought I`d try to start a conversation here in the chat corner.
so... do you guys have a spesial\cool book store close to you?( a big one, a cheap one etc etc)
the chains in my town isent so great, but thers 2 second hand bookstores. both of which I love, and the books are cheap and always a big variety.

message 237: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (pickyreader1) | 1925 comments I don't buy used books very often; if I buy, I want it to be brand new. It feels more like it's mine.
I get about 90% of my physical books from the library, but the other 10 is from bookstores like Chapters, which is near my place.

message 238: by [deleted user] (new)

I find a lot of the time second hand books in great condition and since its way cheaper than new books, thats how I often buy books.( its expensive to buy books here in norway)

message 239: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (pickyreader1) | 1925 comments That's logical, Oda.
I just don't like buying used books for some reason. The new books in Canada aren't cheap either, so I try not to buy.

message 240: by Kaylani (new)

Kaylani (cityeclectics) | 297 comments I buy almost all my books from used book stores, thrift stores or the library bookstore.

Sometimes they are library copies but I am fine with that. I generally don't pay more than 1-2 dollars at the library book store even if it is a library copy.

I love my local savers for books, I also love Arc's Valu Village, a small book store located underneath a cheapo in my area called booksmart but not apart of the chain in the states, a small book store called mager's and quinn and a book store near one of the universities that I forgot the name of.

I also really like half price books sometimes but they can be harder to get to... and goodwill can be great for books as well as well as unique thrift store.

Depends on the types of books and how much i care about the physical condition o the book.

I have too many library fines to be able to check them out right now so I am in the process of doing paperwork to see if I can get them expunged. Which means all books need to be bought right now and it makes it a little more difficult. However I should be able to get them taken off and then I will be able to download ebooks again and get physical copies and it will help.

I just find sometimes a book comes available and I'm not ready for that kind of book when it comes available and so sometimes it is easier for me to just find a cheap copy if I am almost positive i'm going to want a copy down the road anyways. Especially with series or books I think I will reference again.

I used to only by new books from Amazon, all hardcover when they released. That was when I had a very high paying job! (although I was seriously miserable)

Now I have to shop thrift stores, used bookstores, etc. I do buy some books new, usually online when they release, but I am much more selective now! And I buy a lot more ebooks now, especially when they go on sale for 1.99 or .99 cents!

Even when I buy books online I usually buy used ones. It's partly because I don't have a lot of money, but I also just find used book stores a lot more appealing. Don't get me wrong, I love going to Barnes & Noble and whatnot, but there's just something satisfying about going through older and/or pre-owned books. I feel like also there's more of an interesting variety at used book stores and I never know what I'm going to find there, whereas at a regular book store it's just a lot of shelves of popular books. What's also nice about used books is, I'm much more willing to take a chance on a book I haven't heard of before––and I've found a lot of great books that way!

I prefer to buy my books new, but I really love borrowing old/well-read/well-loved books. It's always interesting to read a book you borrowed from a friend and imagine their reactions to the same thing you're holding in your hands.
