Most of us haven't been on here much lately so I don't think you missed much! As for me the kids just started school again. Alison is a senior, Noah and Logan (the twins) are juniors, and Tessa is a fifth grader :)

That's awesome, Jenny!

My two granddaughters did it today too. And they challenged my grandson. I haven't seen if he did it yet. It's a good cause. I've done their walks to raise money before.

It's not so bad in Arizona. By the time you get to the challenge, the ice is all melted in our 109°F. But still a shock as the water is still really cold!

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 4472 comments I'm glad a lot of people are doing this, but there's no way I would! If it was as hot as it is with Karen then maybe, but since it's not that warm here to start with... No thanks! I may prefer to be hot rather than cold, and love snowy and icy weather, but even I have my limits, LOL!

I'm OK. Well, at least, I'm as OK as I possibly can be, bearing in mind I had to put my dog to sleep two weeks ago today and twisted my ankle on Friday (the ankle is weak from a childhood injury, so pain in it isn't anything new). But, yeah, other than those things I'm doing pretty good!

How are you?

Victoria, sorry about your ankle, too. Between your beloved Kero and now your ankle, geeezzzz? Hope it feels better soon!

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 4472 comments Thanks, Karen!

The ankle will never be completely better, but I'm looking forward to when the pain eases off some again!

Can't believe Kero's been gone two weeks... I still expect to hear the jingle of the tags on his collar, like I used to whenever he was walking about.

I still miss my dogs I had while growing up...and they've been gone a long time now. I don't think you ever stop loving your pets :)

R.B. (short for Redgie-BuBu--Don't ask, my sister and I were YOUNG when we got him and named him) was a mix of a Pomeranian and a Cockapoo. He was the stupidest, hyper dog you would ever meet, but he was fiercely loyal. He had a little round bunny rabbit type tail, that shook up and down instead of back and forth. And when he was really excited, it would go round and round :) I was 17 when he died. My best friend accidentally hit him with her car. He didn't die right away, either, poor little guy--I sat with him until he passed. That was a hard day.

Penny was our other dog, she was part German shepherd. She was the sweetest dog, and very smart. She was not very aggressive, for a German shepherd anyway, and very friendly with people. Although one time when I was a teenager and home alone in the summer, some strange guy came to the door, wanting permission to hunt on our property (we had acres of timber on our property) which we did not allow hunters unless they were relatives or really good friends, for safety reasons with our horses and of course, us! He came the door carrying his rifle (stupid jerk) and I think he had been drinking, and wasn't backing down or leaving...Penny was right next to me the whole time and all the of the sudden, she must have sensed that I was getting scared because her fur bristled and she GROWLED...and it was pretty scary! That dude took one look at her, and then ran for his truck and left! Good dog :) She died when I was about 21 I think? She disappeared in the timber and never came back.

Anyways, I still miss both of them, they were wonderful dogs :)

They sound like really great dogs!

I've los pets before and miss them all, but Kero's death seems to have hit me harder. I'm not sure if it's because we were so close (he was practically my shadow, and slept with me and everything) or if it's because he's the only one I've had to make the decision for... It was let them put him to sleep or have him suffer a lot, so I know it was the right decision, but every other pet's death has been out of my hands.

Hi Jenny, hope no one minds me joining in on the thread here. I recently joined the group, but haven't much chance to chat to folk. Usually can only dip in to discussions when I'm not writing or doing all the stuff us mum's have to do. My two boys went back to school last week, only to pick up colds after a few days of being back, which they've now kindly passed onto me. So hence, I'm sitting here with a head like cotton wool, and sucking my way through a box of Strepsils when I should be working on my next chapter.

Ps, Love the expression on your daughter's face after her ice bucket challenge. Hopefully it won't give her a cold, though. When you live in Scotland, usually just setting foot outside the door is an ice bucket challenge :)

message 483: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (pickyreader1) | 1925 comments I have a question for all of you.
I've never been a re-reader. In fact, I don't think I have ever re-read a book voluntarily. I think that because I already know what happens, a book won't move me as much as it did the first time, and it won't be as entertaining as reading another book for the first time. However, there are a couple of books coming out in the fall that are series continuations/finales, and I can't really remember every detail from the previous books in the series. So is it worth reading all the previous books again to remember what happened? Or is that a waste of time? Should I just go straight into the new books and expect everything to come back to me?

message 484: by Victoria (new)

Victoria Zigler (toriz) | 4472 comments W.J: Feel free to jump in wherever you want on the group! Hope you get over your cold soon!

Daniel: It has to be your choice, but I would say it depends on how much you remember of the earlier books. If you remember all but the finer details then you'll be fine not re-reading them. But, if you only remember a few details and the main plot points are lost to you, then it would be worth re-reading the earlier books first.

I never used to reread, but I'm doing it more and more often now. Often you'll catch details and foreshadowing that you couldn't have caught the first time, or you'll feel even more of a connection to the characters than you did the first time around. I'd recommend re-reading series you've enjoyed, especially if new books are coming out.

I've been doing a lot of audiobook rereads lately because that way it doesn't seem as repetitive as reading the physical book again. Whatever works for you!

W.J. Lennox | 100 comments Thanks for the welcome, Jenny, Karen and everyone else in the group. Yeah, it sucks to have the cold before we're even into autumn, but hopefully a quiet weekend will help fight it off. Scotland is beautiful, especially on the rare occasion that the sun shines. I'm biased of course as to me it's home, but definitely worth a visit, Karen if you get the chance. I live in a tiny village in the countryside, 30 miles from Edinburgh. Plenty of fresh air and rolling hills, so it's a great place to bring up kids, while still being close enough to civilisation! -Wendy

Roger Jackson Hi people. I'm Roger, a first-time poster here in this thread. In this group actually. I've read some of your posts and this seems to be a good place to relax.

Victoria, I'm a dog lover (I'm a cat liker) and we have two, a big dog and a little dog. We lost a golden to liver cancer a few years ago. You really don't forget them.

I have a wife and two kids. The second just went off to college. Missing her a lot :(

Daniel, I'm not a re-reader either. The details usually start coming back to me once I start reading the next book in sequence, even if it's been a while since I read the previous one. You might try just rereading the previous one. It could give you enough boost to your memory.

I'll probably pop in and out a lot. Lots to do, always, but I'll definitely come back.

I LOVE rereading books, especially if I loved them the first time! And its worth noting that you might catch little details that you missed the first time. If the author is any good, and its a deeper read, rereading is always SO rewarding for me!

Hey Roger! Welcome!

I'm a huge rereader of books. For me, they're like old friends! I've worn several books out from rereading them so often. Like Jenny mentioned, I always catch something new that I may have missed the first time around. Especially, books with twists may have a subtle hint that makes complete sense when you reread knowing what the twist is.

message 493: by W.J. (last edited Aug 30, 2014 09:06AM) (new)

W.J. Lennox | 100 comments Roger: Good to meet you. My kids are 13 & 11, so I don't have to think about them leaving home yet, thankfully. I'll probably be a wreck when it happens.

Daniel - I think it depends on the book. If it's been a firm favourite that you haven't read in a while, you can read it with fresh eyes. You might discover something new you missed first time round, get the chance to re-read a beautifully written piece of description or dialogue, which reminds you why you fell in love with the book in the first place.

Often in fantasy or sci-fi books, there are subtle elements that you might not pick up on the first time you read it. These may be key to the overall story arc or the development of a particular character, and it's only when you go back and read it again, you make the connection. This is particularly true of books in a series or Trilogy. In my writing, I've woven in little gems of information that might seem irrelevant at the time, but will later come to play a greater part in the overall story.

Of course, there's plenty of books I've read that didn't leave any lasting impression, and I wouldn't choose to read again, but I think if you feel a connection with a particular book or writing style, it can feel like revisiting an old friend - both special and comforting.

message 494: by Marla (new)

 Marla | 366 comments Welcome W.J. & Roger!

@Daniel - I also am not a re-reader. (There are just too many good books waiting to re-read something I already read.) If I really feel compelled to revisit something, I am like Kritika and tend to listen to them on audiobook. Another little trick I have is to write enough in my GoodReads review so I know things so when I go to the next book, I have those things fresh in my mind. But if I really enjoyed it the first time and it's been a while, I may breakdown and re-read it.

You can also read other people's reviews and many people will list a synopsis of the book and then you'll be ready to read the next one in the series. I think it depends on how much you liked the book the first time and how long it's been which method you choose to follow.
