Non-Fiction Sub-genres:
Art & Photography: An art book may mean a conventional book on art or art history, or an artist’s book, which is a work of art in the form of a book, usually produced in a small limited edition, often not just using normal printing techniques. You may select a book from either topic, or one that combines them both. A photo-book or photobook is a book in which photographs make a significant contribution to the overall content. A photo-book is related to and also often used as a “coffee table book.” However, due to crossover, we will also list this option under the Gifts sub-genre. (Examples: GRs’ shelf has Art; Photography; Art & Photography; Coffee Table Books.)

Autobiography: This is a book where the biography of a person narrated by himself or herself. (Examples on GRs’ shelf Autobiography has several, but be careful, as some are Autobiographical, which is NOT part of the non-fiction sub-genre challenge. According to Wiki Autobiographical is:
A literary technique distinguished from an autobiography or memoir by the stipulation of being fiction. Because an autobiographical novel is partially fiction, the author does not ask the reader to expect the text to fulfill the “autobiographical pact.”
Biography: This is a written account of another person’s life. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Best Biographies.)

Diary & Memoirs: A true account of someone’s life, usually chronological. (Examples may be found sprinkled among auto & bio on GRs’ listopia Best Memoir / Biography / Autobiography. Also on GRs’ shelf Popular Non-Fiction Diaries.)

Business & Finance: These would be money books, real estate, investing, understanding stocks, accounting, banking, etc. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Best Business Books; The 100 Best Business Books of All Time; Best Books About Money; Best Investing & Trading Books.)

Cookbooks / Food & Lifestyle: Non-fiction books written about preparation of meals, snacks, and other food items. (Examples are way too many to post, but you may start with GRs’ listopia Best Cookbooks; Best Ethnic Cookbooks; Vegetarian Cooksbooks That Non-Vegetarians Will Enjoy Too; Best Vegan Cookbooks; Historical Cookery.)

Cultural/Social Issues: With this sub-genre, investigate the cultures of the world and the social issues affecting them. See how an issue affects the leadership of a community, or investigate other factors affecting the social organization of a community. These also cover a broad range of social-justice topics throughout history: being poor, being gay, being black, etc. For a specific culture, you’ll have to look under that country.

Current Affairs & Politics: Keep up to date with world affairs with this sub-genre: health policy issues, fast-food, global-warming, ethnic violence in South Sudan, recent Supreme Court decisions, etc. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Best Books to Become an Informed Voter; Politics; Foreign Service Officers Reading List.)

Gardening: These books contain expert garden advice, tips, and inspiration on planning. Be it getting rid of pests and diseases, or to growing vegetables in a small garden, or going organic, making a kid-friendly vegetable bed, there’s something for everyone who wants to try this hobby. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Gardening Books - and more!)

General Non-Fiction: A “catch-all” category for anything we haven’t covered. (For example, GRs’ listopia Best Books on Enlightenment; Notable Atheist Book; Best Essays/Essayists.)

Gift Book / Coffee Table Book: These are keepsake books and are often lavishly decorated and with elaborate bindings. Or will certainly be a more luxurious edition than prior ones. They are also usually not a self-purchase. (Examples GRs’ shelf Best Books to Gift and Coffee Table Books.)

Health, & Fitness / Medical (for the lay-person): This sub-genre offer practical guides to diet, exercise, healthy aging, illness prevention, and sexual well-being, to name a few topics. (There are a plethora of these, but here is a start: Best Fitness Books, Instructional; It's All About Being Fit & Healthy; A Nutrition Reading List.)

History: History is the discovery, collection, organization, and presentation of information about past events. (An example is GRs’ shelf History.)

Home Decorating & Design / Architecture: Name pretty much says it all, plus, all those beautiful books about all kinds of buildings. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Best Traditional Interior Design; Must Read Architecture Books; Feng Shui.)

How To: A “how-to” book is an informal, often short, description of how to accomplish a specific task. It is usually meant to help non-experts, may leave out details that are only important to experts; it may also be greatly simplified from an overall discussion of the topic. Some books focus on how to do a particular hobby. (Examples on GRs’ listopia The Best How To's. Also on Lifestyle Updated The Best How-To Books Ever Written.)

Non-Fiction Sub-genres: ...continued.
Humor: While often a work of fiction, there are some non-fiction around. Here the writer seeks to amuse the reader, sometimes with subtlety and as part of a carefully woven narrative, sometimes above all other considerations. (For examples you’ll have to weed through GRs’ shelf Humor for the Non-Fiction novels.)

Journalism: Written by a reporter. This one has many sub-sub-genres within it, as noted by Wiki: Ambush; Celebrity or People; Churnalism (wire stories); Convergence; Gonzo, Investigative, New, Sports, and more. Whatever you choose, make sure it falls under non-fiction. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Best Books by Journalists; Books by Journalists.)

Military: All about war. (There are tons of books on GRs’ plain “military” shelf that are NOT Non-Fiction; a better bet would be Military-History.

Music, Film, & Entertainment: Title says it all. This sub-genre is for the music buffs and star gazers of the big or small screen. May be a book with reviews on these. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Best Non-Fiction About Music; Books ABOUT Movies.)

Nature & Ecology: Nature is everything that was not made by man. Ecology is essentially the study of the workings of the planet Earth. Or the science of the relationships between organisms and their environments. (Examples on GRs’ shelf Nature & Ecology.)

Outdoor Adventuring: Story of outdoor activities such as hiking, trekking, and adventurous sports. More of a how to and where to; not as extreme as True Adventure. [Contrast with Travel and True Adventure.]

Parenting: These go a little deeper than the typical “how-to” books, but not as deep as the Psychology sub-genre. They include expert advice on pregnancy, babies, and childcare. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Most Influential Parenting Books.)

Pets: Be it pet memoirs or training guides, these books are not just for children.(Examples on GRs’ listopia Animal Memoirs.)

Pop Culture & Celebrity: These books often document the rapid changes reflected in and informed by popular culture and celebrity. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Best Show Business Memoirs & Biographies.)

Psychology: Starting way back in 1890, these “science of mind” books captured the imagination of a vast range of thinkers: philosophers, alienists, neurologists, psychologists, as well as the new human or social scientists. (GRs’ listopia Books Every Psychology and/or Counseling Doctoral Student Should Read; Greatest Psychology Books.)

Reference: Edited and authored by the most highly regarded experts in their fields, these books are intended to be consulted for information on specific matters rather than read from beginning to end, so it may be a little harder to finish. We’ll allow, if you’ve read 60% of the book, or used it as a frequent reference for a course taken. (Examples on RUSA, by year. Also on GRs’ listopia Best Writing Reference; Best Refernece Books Ever.)

Relationship & Dating: These books run the gamut from contain advice for married couples trying to improve the communication in their marriage, the newly divorced looking for advice on “getting back in the game” after a decade away from the dating scene, to singles of both sexes navigating the rapidly changing mores in today’s tech-savvy world. (Examples on GRs’ shelf Popular Dating & Relationships Books. GRs’ listopia Best Relationship Non-Fiction.)

Religion & Spirituality: Focus on religion and customs, or spirituality. May be with themes or inspiration from religion and spirituality ...whether introspective or irreverent. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Different Takes on Religion & Spirituality.)

Science & Technology: This sub-genre geared toward researchers, professionals and students across life sciences, physical sciences, engineering, and computing. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Best Science Book: Non-Fiction Only.)

Self-Help: ‘Self-help books’ are books written with the intention to instruct readers on a number of personal problems. They take their name from Self-Help, by Samuel Smiles, the Victorian best-seller, but are also known and classified under “self-improvement,” a term that is a modernized version of self-help. (Example on GRs’ listopia Best Self Help Books.)

Sports: Pick a sport, any sport, and read about it. From Baseball, Basketball, Cycling, Figure Skating, Fitness, Gymnastics, Hockey, Horse Racing, Mountaineering, Racing, Skateboarding, Skiing, Snowboarding, Olympic Games... the types are endless. There are lots of Memoirs in the sub-genre. You’ll have to look under specific sport, otherwise you’ll run into a lot of fiction. (Examples on GRs’ listopia Best Sports History Books; Cricket; Tales from the Hardwood; Baseball Books to Love; The Olympic Games; Books on Tennis; Best (American) Football Books.)

Travel: Be they top travel destinations or an exclusive yoga hide-away, these books are great guides designed for use by visitors or tourists and have information about places; usually with sections on what not to miss and why. (Many examples on GRs’ shelf Travel; however, make sure the place really exists, as there are some non-fiction listed there.) [Contrast with Outdoor Adventure and True Adventure.]

True Adventure: The name tells us everything! (Examples on GRs’ shelf True Adventure. Also on National Geographic Adventure Magazine: Extreme Classics: The 100 Greatest Adventure Books of All Time.) [Contrast with Outdoor Adventure and Travel.]

True Crime: True crime is a non-fiction literary genre in which the author examines an actual crime and details the actions of real people. The crimes most commonly include murder, but true crime works have also touched on other legal cases. Still others revisit historic crimes (or alleged crimes) and propose solutions, such as books examining political assassinations, well-known unsolved murders, or the deaths of celebrities. (Examples on GRs’ shelf True Crime.)

Women’s Issues: Issues affecting women: from spousal abuse, to anatomy, to dealing with male chauvinism in the workplace. (Examples on GRs’ shelf Women’s Issues.)
