Jack Pramitte | 105 comments Hello,

The cover is missing for this edition:
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...

You will find it here:
http://images.noosfere.org/couv/p/pdf...

Could you please add it to the book?

Thanks

Jack Pramitte | 105 comments Wonderful! Thank you!

lethe | 13731 comments I'm sorry, noosfere doesn't look like a publisher's site and is therefore not a site we can use for book covers.

Jack Pramitte | 105 comments noosfere isn't a bookseller neither. It's a catalog dedicated to sci-fi books. It gives informations about the various editions.
See: http://www.noosfere.com/icarus/livres...

lethe | 13731 comments I don't think we can use that either, publishers, authors' own sites, and public and national libraries are allowed but apart from those it's very difficult. Are there any terms & conditions that you can find about using covers and other info from their site?

lethe | 13731 comments Rivka, I don't think this website is allowed as a source for GR. Could you have a look and confirm?

"encyclopédie francophone de Science-Fiction"
nooSFere is an encyclopedia and bibliographical database. It's not a bookseller or publisher.

It's not clear where they get their images from, so I don't think we can use them.

Jack Pramitte | 105 comments I don't really understand. Nobody own the rights on the cover except the publisher. It is explicitly written on every book published in France that no copy of any part of a book is autorized. That said, there are copies of book covers everywhere on the web and no publisher take offense for that.

message 10: by Jack (new)

Jack Pramitte | 105 comments What I mean: I don't think that noosphere owns the right on the cover in the first place. And I don't understand how Goodreads can own the right to show any cover.

Michael Korleone (michaelkorleone) | 3881 comments I guess we can use the publisher site and I can locate the book here for ISBN 2207245799. But unfortunately, my browser's kicking me out while trying to access denoel.fr and the cached page from Google doesn't load cover image :(

I can access that page, but the image says 'couverture non disponible' (cover not available).

Jack, I don't know if you have the book, but we could use your own scan or photo.

Jack Pramitte | 105 comments Later, maybe. My copy is stored in a cellar far from my apartement.

In the meanwhile, you may ask Noosphere permission to use the scan at this adress: noocontact@noosfere.com

I'm not going to do that. If you want to, feel free. I don't know if that would solve any copyright issues GR might have with this, though.

Jack Pramitte | 105 comments Your answer doesn't help me to understand the issue.

Noosphere doesn't own the rights on the cover in the first place. In France, it is fair to copy something as long as you do not make money with it and the publisher doesn't ask you to remove it.

I assume the publishers agree with the fair use of the covers by Goodreads. Otherwise, Goodreads would have a lot of problems.

Noosphere also collects reviews. It would be a different story if I was trying to copy one of those reviews without permission.

lethe | 13731 comments I think we cannot use covers from noosphere for the same reason we also cannot use covers from readers' personal blogs.

Copyright law is a minefield and I'd rather not concern myself with it, but let GR staff decide what is and isn't permissible. If Rivka/GR staff decide noosphere is not an approved source, we will have to delete the image.
