One thing I found culturally relevant about Cameroon, and the French Congo is that when a wife gives birth, whether it be a son or daughter, she is absolved of all previous sins. The true religion has not yet been revealed, so I know not of all of the penalties faced for each sin, but I didn't know simply having a kid could change and help their lives so much.

The main character Medza failed his baccalaureate in Europe, and returns to his village in disgrace. His cousin Zambo is trying to get him to go to Kala to recollect his wife. Kala is Zambos wife's home village; she fled there after Zambo beat her.

I personally find any kind of abuse wrong. Specifically physical abuse. No matter the customs or rules of a society, an abused woman should have the right to flee as she wishes. I disagree with some of the customs in this novel, and feel that due to the lack of knowledge and availability of obtaining knowledge in these lands, their rules and regulations are vastly outdated.
