Nine Sacred Scars? Buddhist Symbol?

Stephen When Wang Lung's eldest boy gets married there's a reference to having both Taoist and Buddhist monks at the ceremony and it refers to the nine sacred scars of the Buddhist monks. I've never heard of these before and a quick web search turned up nothing helpful.

Can someone who's better informed, fill me in?

Kenneth I'm guessing, although I'm not hundred percent sure, that the nine sacred scars refer to the dots you see on the top of the heads of monks in Asia which are made with smouldering incense sticks. They are burned into three rows.

Chinese religious practice tends to mix different, conflicting ideologies quite happily. Buddhism and daoism have been mixed together since Buddhism first started to get a foothold in china.
