I don't know how many of you play games online but I am a huge fan of MMOs because when they're done right (not WoW) they tend to feel like a living book and create deep worlds in the same way Rothfuss does.

The last game I played that felt this deep was EverQuest, but it's an old game now and the graphics are dated. In EverQuest, there were no maps, which meant you had to talk to people (a la Kvothe to Skarpi) to figure things out, and finding your way around this world was like an adventure (think Kvothe making his way to the University, Kvothe finding his way around Tarbean, etc). When you killed things, you learned how your character's class (ranger, druid, bard, etc) fought best and you had to find strategies to avoid your class's weaknesses - like Kvothe being resourceful to avoid being broke (his weakness), like Kvothe calling the name of the wind. And death was a very scary thing because it meant you would lose hard-earned experience, even going so far as to delevel (go backwards a level), and you'd have to run naked to your corpse and hope nothing wanted to kill you while you're vulnerable. All these things made EverQuest feel very real to its players, like you were IN it, the way books can be. There has never been a game that's made its players feel so immersed since then.

I feel like a lot of you would really enjoy that kind of a gaming experience, one where you're not constantly reminded that you're playing a game, where you truly feel like you're exploring a world full of danger and excitement. That's a reader's dream, right?

So there's this Kickstarter for a game called Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen, created by EverQuest's creator, Brad McQuaid. He also did Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, if anyone's familiar. Pantheon is going to revitalize this niche kind of game and I'm really excited about that. I'm hoping you guys might share my interest in it so we can make this a reality. I really think it's worth supporting!

Renee (moon9river) | 6 comments Lots of people seem to be talking about it. Not sure how I feel about it yet. Isn't it supposed to look like Minecraft?
