If Miss Mac took the role of Mother, of authority and guidance, the damage a second abandonment would cause to Vera would be incalculable.

Are we being told that repression of the imagination, of dreaming, leads to death? As does abandonment of oneself to it. Should we be saying temperance in all things - life should be spent dancing on the thin line between illusion and reality, and not at either pole?
