Team 2 (Team Gold)
This looks very exciting! But I have no idea what the genres "steampunk" or "dystopian" even are, so I doubt I will be reading those!
Ann, to find books with unfamiliar genres, just click the down arrow by "Explore" on the Goodreads bar above, then click on genres. That will bring up a page where you can type in any genre you'd like and get a list of books that fit. We're both on Team 2 and will have to figure out how to discuss who's doing what!
There are ten of us, so even if we each read only one book, we should be able to manage at least two strings. If a couple of people read two books, and we make judicious use of the free space, we should be able to manage three.I suggest we start by having each team-member pick their top 3 choices of genres they would like to read, and then listing another three they would be willing to read. We can compare all the choices and see if they add up to a BINGO or two. We can all think about it, and confer online tomorrow.
Goodreads' genre lists don't specifically include Steampunk, but here is a link to a list of popular steampunk books:https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/6...
I do know I need to read a Fantasy for my Chunkster during this Toppler. Other than that, I can be quite flexible. My top three genres are:
1. Fantasy
2. Historical Fiction
3. Classics
Next three:
4. Mystery
5. Romance
6. Short Stories
Also can do:
7. Horror
8. Suspense/Thriller
9. Paranormal
10. Cultural
My top 3 picks would be:1. Contemporary
2. Historical fiction
3. Humour
I would also read:
1. Mystery
2. Crime
3. Classics
I'm open to reading, if need be:
1. Biography
2. Non-fiction
3. Paranormal
I will have a look at my pile tonight an post favorites. But I am game for anything, but i could do without the romance.I know i have a contemporary one that i can read in one sitting.
I have some fantasy, SF, sort story, science fiction, mystery, paranormal in my pile.
Anyone has a clever team name in mind?
I am up for anything. I have never read any steampunk... I wouldn't mind giving that a go. I guess my preferred genres would be1. contemporary
2. classic
3. historical fiction
In general I don't enjoy chick lit much, which is funny because I rather enjoy a good romance from time to time. Anyway, use me to fill in whatever holes may appear if you need me to. It all sounds like fun to me!
My top three choices would be:1. Biography
2. Non-fiction
3. Memoir
I could also go for fantasy, action/adventure, and sci fi!
My top three would be:1. Horror
2. Mystery
3. Cultural
My next three would be:
4. Steampunk
5. Fantasy
6. Short Stories
Has anyone thought of a team name?
Janice - how did you copy and paste this. I tried but it didn't work for me. It did come up with a link and maybe if I clicked on that the board would appear?
My top three would be1. Mystery
2. Fantasy
3. Paranormal
I'm also willing to read
4. Science/nature
5. Chick Lit (heaven help me)
6. Romance
Many books qualify in multiple categories. I poked around in "genres" last night and was surprised by the results. I'm interested in reading Lost Lake, by Sarah Addison Allen. It seems to fit in contemporary, fantasy, and chick lit. I read a fair number of paranormal mysteries, and the line between fantasy and paranormal is highly debatable. Almost any YA book also fits some other category (mystery, fantasy, culture, etc.). And "cultural" seems to take in just about anything featuring characters from any identifiable culture. The crime category overlaps mystery and suspense/thriller. What makes this really challenging is the rule about no one reading two books in the same line. People reading a book on a corner, or a book on a diagonal corner-to-corner line, are cut off from about a dozen categories.
I can't get to GR's "genres" section on my iPhone...I may have to guess as to the genre of whatever I'm reading...
I'm thinking a fast reader should do the "free" space. I am likely only good for one, MAYBE two if they're short, books in a week.
Alrighty *rolls up sleeves*My Top Three Genres
Horror
Dystopian
Young Adult
Can also read
Paranormal
Non-Fiction
Contemporary
Historical Fiction
Sci-Fi
Suspense/Thriller
I'm pretty confident I could get through three books in the week, maybe up to 5 (depending on the genres!)
GO TEAM 2! (until we have a catchier name!)
I've been prowling the other teams' feeds (strategies) and they are discussing that a speedier reader should take the free spot. Perhaps we should get this clarified...
Nancy wrote: "Janice - how did you copy and paste this. I tried but it didn't work for me. You'll note that there is a blank card there too. You'd have to download that one to your computer and use Paint to slot people's names.
Wait a minute! Here am I giving trade secrets away to a person on another team! LOL!
Ann wrote: "I've been prowling the other teams' feeds (strategies) and they are discussing that a speedier reader should take the free spot. Perhaps we should get this clarified..."message 114 mentions the Free space
"Five different team members have to read the books in a line (four if the free space is in the line)."
Janice wrote: "Wait a minute! Here am I giving trade secrets away to a person on another team! LOL! ..."
Me too!☺
The free spot is a given, just like in the game of Bingo. You mark it as book read, but no book is actually read. I'm not sure why other teams would assign the free spot to speedier readers. If anything, it should be assigned to a slow poke like me, because then I would have completed my obligation without having read a book. Hehehehe! Can I have the free spot? Can I, can I, huh?
So we still need a name. How about Team Gold since we're going to win?
Theresa~OctoberLace wrote: "I'm not great at names but I am with matrices. Maybe I can volunteer to lay out our Bingo plan."Yay... we'll just call you our team captain.
Janice wrote: "The free spot is a given, just like in the game of Bingo. You mark it as book read, but no book is actually read. I'm not sure why other teams would assign the free spot to speedier readers. I..."
Team Gold - love it!
In no particular order I would ready any of the following:Mystery, Crime, Romance, Classic, Contemporary, Historical Fiction, Fantasy
And I would also consider:
Chick-lit, Non-fiction, Cultural, Short stories, Suspense
Theresa~OctoberLace wrote: "I'm not great at names but I am with matrices. Maybe I can volunteer to lay out our Bingo plan."I'm so glad someone is good with matrices. I've been thinking about this, and it seems to me that the key to maximizing how many strings we read is efficient use of readers who expect to finish multiple books.
For example, Joe has listed biography, memoir and non-fiction, but if he wants to read two books, the only way both count is if the two are non-fiction and biography, since memoir is in a line with both of the others. Nearly everything I listed is in the upper left-hand corner, and it would be tricky to combine more than two of them. That probably does not matter, since I am highly unlikely to read more than two books, but for someone like Kat, who plans to read three or more books, planning is important.
I'm sure I can finish one book, and I might finish two, but more than that is unlikely. How many of us think we might finish three or more books? Setting up multiple reads for those people will require strategy.
This also means that for over-lapping lines, we need multiple people on one category. If we want to read, say, the top line, plus the "B" line on the left, plus the diagonal from Chick lit to biography, we would need three people to read chick lit. This could take a lot of planning.
Here's a quick list. I can read out of this list but these books are from my real tbr that I are not chunkster. La Liste de mes envies: contemporary
Folly: mystery
The House of Scorta: historical fiction
The Warded Man fantasy
The Atrocity Archives: scifi
The Calling: ya, fantasy, parnormal
The Ghost Bride: historical, cultural?
Shards and Ashes: ya, short stories, dystopian
Wow! This is not going to be easy to put together. I'm working on it, though. Would anyone like to volunteer to read a suspense/thriller? Here are links to a couple of lists that include some good ones: THRILLERS and SUSPENSE. As you can see, there's lots of overlap. That would complete the top row, which would have:
Caseil - Chick Lit
Annette - Classic
Theresa - Fantasy
Janice - Horror
Roz (Volunteered, thank you!) - Suspense/Thriller
More to come...
Roz wrote: "I can do that. I was thinking of reading Killing Floor. I think that should fit thriller."Super, Roz! That will take care of one line, so now I have to put together a second for the other 5 team members.
I think I have a second Bingo string set up, second line across:Esther - Science/Nature
Kirila - Mystery
Ann - Paranormal
Kat - Dystopian
Joe - Action/Adventure
If anyone doesn't want the assigned genre or wants help finding books, let me know. With these two strings, everyone has a first book.
I'm happy with being assigned a genre and am thrilled to do horror. I may be able to finish two books, so I could do crime in the third row since I've got a whack of Harry Hole books on my chunkster list. But if that doesn't fit in with the master plan, assign me something different.

Err.. Not in a week.... i can try, but i probably will not make it.
Can someone check is Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs qualifies as a paranormal choice?
Ann wrote: "Can someone check is Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs qualifies as a paranormal choice?"paranormal is 3rd in the genre list so I would say it does.
Ann wrote: "Can someone check is Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs qualifies as a paranormal choice?"Ann, that's a great one for this Bingo! The genres include:
YA
Fantasy
Paranormal
Mystery
Historical Fiction
Science Fiction
Adventure
Apparently I've been reassigned to Team 1. Sorry ladies and gentlemen...I guess there was a mixup between me (Ann) and Anna.
Since Esther doubts she can finish a book in Science/Nature within a week, is anyone else interested in reading Science/Nature for this Bingo? I looked at the list and can highly recommend Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen
by Christopher McDougall. The book is about 287 pages, and the audiobook runs just over 11 hours. There are many more in this genre if you check the library.
Theresa~OctoberLace wrote: "Since Esther doubts she can finish a book in Science/Nature within a week, is anyone else interested in reading Science/Nature for this Bingo? I looked at the list and can highly recommend [book:Bo..."Sorry Theresa. I just notice my missing word in my post this morning (death to ipad keyboard) that should have been science fiction. I may be travelling that week so it means , if i do, that I will restricted to paper books I own and no time for audio. Science books i own are all started and the ones I plan to buy are in English and it takes me usually 3 weeks to get them.
I have a science book I could read in a week: The Grand Design, but someone else would have to take Chick Lit. The book I was going to read for Chick Lit is Lost Lake, which someone else is planning to read for contemporary, but it fits both categories.
Okay false alarm...There are a few Ann's and Anne's involved in this toppler, but J'Mom has given me the green light to stay here with Team 2. So I am good to go with the paranormal genre, if that's still where I'm needed.
Casceil, I'd take Chick Lit, but I really need Fantasy for my Chunkster, so maybe someone else will step up. I believe we may get one or two new players, too. Is anyone planning to read The Rosie Project this month? It's a Group Read on another group and also only $1.99 for Kindle thru 1/31/14. AND....It's got Chick Lit on its home page.
Ann, I'm glad you'll still be with us. Paranormal is fine...unless you'd like to do the Chick Lit?
