Anne Hagins Make up your own endings. I'm curious to see what everyone else thinks; I thought of a really detailed and happy ending, but not everyone has the same idea. Express your opinions :)

Paula You know there are three other books following The Giver right? :) (Gathering Blue, Messenger, and Son)

Mackenzie Yup, they are sooo good.

Skylar P. My English class had a huge argument about the ending. Most of my class said that he died, but the others said that he found life where he saw the lights.

Anne Hagins I heard about the three others, but I just prefer to come up with my own. And so did my English class :)

Iris I thought, initially, that he died because it was so vague. Then I thought that he might have lived, but he definitely passed out. If he lived it was because someone went out and found him and brought him back to the safety of the village.

Samantha Yea, I honestly believed he lived but he just happened to pass out. The other three books that follow, I heard they just took place in the same universe but they weren't direct sequels...

Skylar P. They were saying that the other 2 books had nothing to do with Jonas, just the community he was living in.

Paula Gathering Blue and Messenger (the two following sequels) don't have a lot to do with Jonas and Gabe, though they are briefly mentioned... Son (the 4th book), however, kinda ties everything up :) you guys should read the sequels, they're great! The Giver is better though hahaha :P

I liked it better as a mystery. I wish Lowry would have stuck to the original plan and kept Jonas and Gabe out of the sequels instead of trying to please her fans!

Meena I haven't read the other books, and. I kind of like the mystery too, but. I like to think that he starts a new life where the lights are.

Jonas takes Gabe off the sled with him to remember the beautiful celebration of people just down by the village. He opens the first door to see presents under what looks like a pine tree. The vocals stop and eyes are on him. Jonas takes a step forward. No one moves.

"Hi" He shutters.
The silence is finally broken.
"It's cold sweetie, What are you doing out there? Come in, I'll warm you up with some Hot Chocolate. "

Ashley-Anne Iif you read the other books (especially Son) you find out what happens but I personally think they ruin the story (there are even some bits that don't actually line up) so in my mind The Giver is stand alone and Jonas died but Gabe survived.

Rebecca Way back in the day, before Gathering Blue was even a twinkle in Lois Lowry's eye, I had this argument with an English teacher. She told me some people thought he died, and that the welcoming arms at the end were the angels receiving them into paradise. I told her she was crazy.

After Gathering Blue came out, she told me some people thought that it was set in the same universe as The Giver. I told her she was crazy.

As a grown-up reader, I think Jonas was probably hallucinating by the end, and I think that Lois Lowry probably wasn't sure herself whether he'd made it or not, because sometimes stories have a mind of their own. Heck, she was pretty sure there wasn't going to be a fourth book, and then Son happened. I think her own website was still calling Messenger the end of the trilogy the day I preordered Son.
