Kenza, You already asked this in another thread and I just posted an answer.A full answer would be a spoiler for those readers who haven't read the book so I hope nobody answers in detail.
Kenza, Well, the other thread is going strong so maybe we can let others post in that thread. As I said, it's been years since I've read the book so I'm not sure.

It's been years since I read it as well, but thematically, utopian societies by their nature are dystopian. Why that would cause banning I can't say. Perhaps if there were a true utopia then one wouldn't yearn for heaven?
P.S. Ursula K. LeGuin has a short story with very similar themes to the The Giver "Those that Walk with the Omelas."

yea i remember talking about that with my friends...and when i looked up some sites they said the exact same thing. and im not sure why its banned either, i was wondering.
I'm moving this to another folder because this folder is for discussing the books we're reading as a group.

You really think so? I think we are extremely fortunate but I really don't think our society is perfect by any means. I don't think the 4 cops who were shot and murdered in a coffee shop while drinking coffee two days ago would agree. Nor would those who are unemployed and have run out of benefits or those without healthcare.

"Utopian society that relies on euthanasia and suicide to create the perfect community"
i dont see that in the book (i'm only a blissfully unaware teenager, so i obviously wouldn't quite yet haha) and how do they use suicide to create a perfect community? i am extremely confused. although that is very interesting, how DO they create a perfect society? please explain!
