Jen (jeninseattle) | 140 comments I just started into this section last night, so am only a chapter plus a few pages in.

Scarlett is loving being married to Rhett for sure. And pretty much purely because of his money. I have to wonder if it's going to last. Rhett is fairly cutting of Scarlett and while it seems that she doesn't know enough to know that it's not a compliment there are some hints that something might be wrong.

Becky Sometimes I just don't understand how Scarlett can be so naïve! I mean, she is so manipulative, and usually manipulative people have a really good understanding of those around them. Or maybe I'm wrong, and she isn't manipulative, she is just a bully. I am just so shocked that she didn't understand the Old Guard. Or how they would react once Governor Bullock set up.

I did love, however, how Rhett takes care of his little girl. In his conversation with Will though I am now convinced that he does have a son with Belle Watling that he is putting up in New Orleans. I think Rhett really does just want to be part of a loving family, something he feels that he never had.

What did you think about Scarlett and Ashley's encounter, and how she thought she would swear off sleeping with Rhett? I continue to fail to see what she sees in Ashley. Rhett must be secretly heartbroken, I think that's why he acts with such contempt. Scarlett is such a fool.

Jen (jeninseattle) | 140 comments Becky - I agree I think that Rhett has a child set up in New Orleans. I suppose we probably won't ever really find out, b/c it doesn't really matter hugely to the story, but I agree.

I found the encounter with Ashley fascinating. I'm not sure that I trust Scarlett as a narrator, but if she is to be trusted, then this was a purely friendly encounter. And that said something to me about Scarlett and how maybe she's grown up a bit. We start to see flashes here about how much she might actually care about Rhett, and I think Rhett is madly in love with her and that's why he treats her so poorly - because it's not returned in the least.

Alana (alanasbooks) | 456 comments Ashley is ridiculous. It's past the point of annoyance by now. Melanie is the most amazing woman in the world, and neither of them can see it. And Rhett is so obviously in love with Scarlett! But both of them are so darn stubborn that neither of them can admit their love for each other. But I feel like their relationship is extremely dysfunctional and unhealthy, for all their being perfect for each other. So frustrating!

I totally agree with this. It would have been better if she had been able to get Ashley out of her system early, then she could have ruined that first and moved on instead of what she is doing now.
