Sarah | 7 comments I read this book as an abridged version in a Readers Digest compilation.

It was about a 14/15 year old boy called Alex; he one day finds that his family was killed but he survived because his bedroom was a cupboard in the house and the killers didn't look there.

He then ends up living on the street or something with a group of other street kids, and then at one point some of the kids end up in a home that they escape from.

At the end he ends up being adopted by some female teacher he met or something; as you can tell my memory is sketchy!

Done loads of searches to see if this book comes up but nothing has...

Can anyone help?

Reader's Digest has an on-line listing, by year, of all their titles. Unfortunately, it's ONLY the title. Sorry, I have a pounding headache starting or I'd do the search for the web-page for you, but I've found it a couple of times before for others, so it's not hard to find. (You just have to be able to read, fortunately, I'm a touch typist, so don't have to watch what I type. I'm heading for a couple of asprin, then a nice darkened room.)

Sarah | 7 comments Thanks; I'll have to try and find it; go through the titles and see if any of them jog my memory... if they don't I'll just have to guess/ investigate...

When did you read this abridged version?
Why was his family killed? Who were the family members?
Is this a contemporary or historical story (like WW2 holocaust)?
Did it take place in the U.S., England, etc.?

I read this book about ten years ago or more (I was a kid then pretty much) I would say the book was written in the 80s/90s... As I say my memory is sketchy about some of the details but it was in the midst of some sort of conflict or something I think; I know it probably wasn't set in the UK/USA as far as I remember, but I don't remember where! (Is frustrated by terrible memory)... things from childhood are always a blur...
