On page 45, footnote number 3 states that Straka is unable to hear frequencies in the range of 2710 to 2760 Hz due to frequent ear infections. I looked this up and this range is between E and F on the piano, three octaves above middle C.

I have no idea if this helps solve what seems to be a puzzle, but I figured I throw this out there.

Good catch. Might it also have something to do with the constant references to birds and whistles and the pitch level they emit?

Yes it's between the sixth and fifth white keys from the right, E7+47cents to F7-21 cents. There's a picture here:
