Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 1260 comments One thing I love about Goodreads is that it doesn't matter where you live in the world we can all share our love of books! It's great partly because you get to learn about different cultures and traditions in the process :)
So I thought, given how much I love Christmas, it would be great to hear about how you all celebrate it!

In this thread, post your answers to the below questions about this festive season!

1. Do you do anything to countdown to the day?
2. When do you put up your Christmas tree and/or other decorations?
3. What goes on top of your tree?
4. What do you eat for your Christmas meal and when do you eat it?
5. Do you have any meal time traditions (eg. crackers, playing a game etc.)
6. Do you leave anything out for Santa? If so what?
7. When do you open your gifts?
8. What's on top of your Christmas list?
9. Do you go to any Christmas services? Religious or otherwise?
10. Don't celebrate Christmas? Tell us what else you celebrate at this time of year?
and finally...
11. Where do you live?

If anyone else has any questions they'd like to add, do let me know and I'll add them to the list

message 12: by Joy (new)

Joy Daniels (joy_daniels) I'm Jewish but I'm not going to let that stop me from doing a Q & A! :-)

In fact I LOVE Christmas decorations. We used to go to Manhattan every year when I was a kid to see the store windows.

And I love carols. I was at a celebration at my yoga studio the other day and I was coaching everyone in "Winter Wonderland" and "12 Days of Christmas", LOL

1. Do you do anything to countdown to the day?

Go to lots of holiday parties - and wheedle myself an invite to someone else's house for X-mas :-)

In high school I had two Jewish friends whose b-days were on Xmas so I would often spend the holiday partying with them :-)

2. When do you put up your Christmas tree and/or other decorations?

This year Hanukkah coincided with Thanksgiving so we put up decorations for both the day before Thanksgiving. (While taking down the last of the Halloween stragglers!) They'll probably come down sometime in February...

(OKay looks like I'm jumping ahead to the non-Xmas questions now...)

10. Don't celebrate Christmas? Tell us what else you celebrate at this time of year?

Hanukkah, although it is not nearly as important a holiday to Jews as Christmas is to Christians. (Our biggies are Rosh Hashannah/Yom Kippur in the early fall, and Passover in the Spring)

and finally...

11. Where do you live? In Maryland, just outside of Washington, DC

message 13: by Sarah (new)

Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 1260 comments I'm going to my first Christmas event today!
So excited, the Christmas lights are being turned on in my small town. By Santa of course! And we're going to watch carol singers and drink mulled wine and eat mince pies and be very cold and maybe go ice skating!

I ♥ Christmas!

Sarah Oxford (sarahloxford) | 1260 comments We did thanks. It rained but it didn't dampen the Christmas spirit.

Jackie Williams | 11 comments 1. Do you do anything to countdown to the day?

Not if I can get away with doing nothing!

2. When do you put up your Christmas tree and/or other decorations?

24th if I can be bothered (it all comes back down on the 26th)last year I forgot to take down the fairy lights around the front door so they have been up all year! I may just take them down for the 2 days and then put them back up again just for a change!

3. What goes on top of your tree?

A floppy untidy fairy with blonde plaits and a patchwork dress(she was bought like that and I like her very much.)

4. What do you eat for your Christmas meal and when do you eat it?

Prosciutto or shellfish salad starter. Roast rib of beef and a ton of veg and Yorkshires for main. Cheesecake or pavlova and cream for pud, cheese and biscuits. All had when we have rolled back in from the pub at about 4.00pm

5. Do you have any meal time traditions (eg. crackers, playing a game etc.)

We give each other the most stupid pointless gifts we can buy for less than £1 each. (this can get very funny. My husband gave his 80 yr old mother a condom last year!!! She nearly died from laughing!)

6. Do you leave anything out for Santa? If so what?

A bottle of beer and a carrot for Rudolf!

7. When do you open your gifts?

Santa's stocking in morning and silly ones after dinner at the table.

8. What's on top of your Christmas list?

Champagne in bed on Christmas morning!

9. Do you go to any Christmas services? Religious or otherwise?

Not if I can help it unless you call going to the pub a religious experience! (I am being very tongue in cheek here!)

10. Don't celebrate Christmas? Tell us what else you celebrate at this time of year?

I do, but in a very daft manner.
and finally...

11. Where do you live?

La La land most of the time but Chelmsford in Essex U.K. when I have to be an adult!
