Ann This was in an anthology I read in about 1982. A young girl (I think she was laplandic) notices tourist girls with pretty cotton dresses. The main character saves her money earned from herding reindeer to by a cotton dress the next time her family travels to to store. This was probably a young adult anthology.

Tab (tabbrown) | 5006 comments Hmm, the best way to find the story is to figure out the anthology it was in. Do you remember anything else about the anthology? Genre, # of stories in book, cover? Were the stories by the same author?

Ann It was a middle school anthology. All different authors.

Tytti | 190 comments I am guessing it wasn't translated? It doesn't really sound like something a Nordic author would right about the Sami people.

Ann I don't know for sure since I can't remember the author. It possibly cold have been. In the end of the story the girl realizes that the new cotton dress doesn't keep her warm and there was value in her traditional clothing.
