I know this is short notice but the National Book Awards will be shown live on CSpan 2

I am rooting for:
Fiction - The Good Lord Bird by James McBride
NF - The Internal Enemy: Slavery and the War in VA 1772 - 1832 by Alan Taylor
Poetry - The Big Smoke by Adrian Matejka (narrative poems on the myth and history of Jack Johnson)

Yes, the build-up for this is crazy. I read 3 articles about it today alone. Said it's the Oscars of the book world. I think it's great. I hope McBride wins as well and if not him then Lahiri for The Lowlands.

I have not yet read The Lowland (its sitting on my kindle saying read me) but that would be my second choice based on liking her prior work.

It was good to see Toni Morrison introduce Dr. Maya Angelou, the recipient of the 2013 Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community

That was my favorite part!

I also realized that I need to stop putting off reading James McBride. I have been talking myself out of reading his books since the early 2000s and For the life of me, I don't know why.

Thanks for sharing this.
PW also interviewed the authors they picked as their 10 and asked them what their fav book of 2013.
James McBride says he has a weakness for spy novels and his pick was A Delicate Truth by John le Carre.
