Absolutely not. Nothing wrong with that and it's a good solution. I did the same thing since i'm first here. I have varieties of old books in my collections. Half of them are in 1st printed editions, also with original cover, ® versions and the ancient languages.
the problem is when i can't find the same editions in the goodreads. Same titles but different covers. Same authors but different publishers, including the published year.

so with the 'ghost' books in my shelves, i make it 'real-exist' in goodreads shelves. Done!

I've just uploaded a second edition of my book Beguiled (Frost Trilogy # 1). I hope I've done it right - it's a bit scary having to create a whole new book with no ratings or reviews!
I hit submit and got the message that it will take a couple of hours before it appears on the site. Is this the stage when it's combined by the librarians with the original edition that I uploaded last month and the revised edition will be available and my ratings and reviews remain intact?

For new edition of the book you've submit before, you need to combined it manually or you can put the request on Goodreads Librarians' thread about combining books by giving links of the editions you want to combine.

You have two editions of Beguiled which I assume are different. I'll combine it for you.

Sorry to be a pain, but after reading a little more about combining editions I'm not sure that this is what I want to do. What I uploaded was an edited copy of my book. I thought this would overwrite the original copy I uploaded, but am I right in thinking this isn't what happens?

I've uploaded the 2nd edition onto Amazon (and Smashwords) so anyone clicking on that link to check it out will only see the 2nd edited version which is what I want.

So maybe I don't need to do anything with the edition that's uploaded to Goodreads. Maybe the 2nd edition could just be deleted? Trouble is I don't know how to do that.

Natasha has it right. This is the second edition of your book. It would get combined with the original edition of that work. If you want the second edition to be the book people find when they do a search you can follow the steps here:

Thanks. I think I've done it right. The only thing is that now this edition isn't showing on listopia. The original was # 11 on Romance Debuts 2014 and # 240 on Best Erotica.
I really don't want to lose this. How do I get this back - can I get this back?

If you mean that you want the new edition to replace the old edition on a Listopia, then it won't. Listopia is edition specific. Both of the lists still have the original book but I'm pretty sure there is no way to replace the edition.
