Please suggest any group reads that you would like to be entered into the poll for January's group read.

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments I may be the only one on goodreads that has not read The Help yet.

My reason is that I wanted to read Like One of the Family: Conversations from a Domestic's Life FIRST. Originally written in 1956, it was recommended by the Association of Black Women Historians as a more accurate portrayal of black domestic workers.

So my nomination is for Like One of the Family

Londa, that sound interesting.

I have had Cane River on my Kindle for a while.

message 4: by Londa (new)

Londa (londalocs) | 1526 comments Cane River is one of my favorite books. Great read! I had another book in mind for January but somehow got sidetracked. If I can nominate 2, great, if I can't please replace the one above with All Different Kinds of Free and I will renominate One of the Family later.

Like Twelve Years a Slave, this novel deals with a free black that was kidnapped and her fight to obtain her freedom. It is a historical fiction, but it is based on a true case. It might be interesting to read about this from a woman's perspective.

All Different Kinds of Free by Jessica McCann

Cinzia | 5 comments I have just read that 'The good lord bird' by James McBride won the National Book Award for fiction 2013.
The book is narrated by the young slave Little Onion, who joins the abolitionist John Brown in his anti-slavery mission.
Maybe we could add it to our to read list for this year.....
