I may be the only one on goodreads that has not read The Help yet. My reason is that I wanted to read Like One of the Family: Conversations from a Domestic's Life FIRST. Originally written in 1956, it was recommended by the Association of Black Women Historians as a more accurate portrayal of black domestic workers.

So my nomination is for Like One of the Family
Cane River is one of my favorite books. Great read! I had another book in mind for January but somehow got sidetracked. If I can nominate 2, great, if I can't please replace the one above with All Different Kinds of Free and I will renominate One of the Family later. Like Twelve Years a Slave, this novel deals with a free black that was kidnapped and her fight to obtain her freedom. It is a historical fiction, but it is based on a true case. It might be interesting to read about this from a woman's perspective.
Zena thanks for nominating on this thread!
Londa, omg what HAVEN'T you read!!!!????!!! lol and yes you can nominate as many books as you want!

Ok, so this will be another difficult vote! :) Such wonderful nominations all around. Some I've read; many are on my list to read...and others to be added!! I join with the others and nominate the following January selections...
Cane River
Like One of the Family: Conversations from a Domestic's Life
All Different Kinds of Freeand I add to the January nominations:
Freeman
The Known World
Mudbound
I have just read that 'The good lord bird' by James McBride won the National Book Award for fiction 2013.The book is narrated by the young slave Little Onion, who joins the abolitionist John Brown in his anti-slavery mission.
Maybe we could add it to our to read list for this year.....
Excellent recommendation, Cinzia! That sounds like another really good one. Adding that one to my to read list!
