RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Seems like Blu-Ray movies/players are coming down in price. I look at DVD definition and I think..."How could they make this even clearer?" but then I see Blu-Rays in action in stores and think well, yes, that does look clearer. What do you think? Anybody got one? Worth it?

Félix (habitseven) Shouldn't this be under RA wants to know?

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8993 comments I would skip Blu-Ray, RA. I think it's all going streaming digital within the next five years. Save your money for the new equipment you're going to need.

Dave Russell I'm so glad I never bought a laserdisk player.

Félix (habitseven) I'm still keeping my Betamax. Just in case.

Matthieu | 1009 comments Betamax! I have a wonderful story about a drunken eBay Betamax purchase, but that's for another day...

Félix (habitseven) Okay ....

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Weren't Betamaxes supposed to be high-quality?

I bet Jackie's still mad a lightning strike killed her VCR.

Gus Sanchez (gussanchez) Blu-Ray comes with the option of allowing the viewer to record and share their own commentary. That would be perfect for someone like me, who enjoys tearing a movie a new asshole as he's watching it.

RA, yes, Betamax were indeed higher quality, but their short recording span - usually no more than 2-3 hours - and their prohibitive cost killed it. Plus, it was the porn industry's embrace of VHS that led to that format, not Betamax, becoming the then-industry standard.

message 10: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Betamax had it all over VHS. It was, after all, the next level of development of that kind of thing. VHS just overwhelmed it because ... hell, who knows why?

message 11: by Gus (new)

Gus Sanchez (gussanchez) Uh, I just explained why, Larry... :-)

Same thing with HD-DVD. It was a better technology than Blu-Ray. Along with the porn industry, gamers warmed to Blu-Ray faster because the B-R discs were game console compatible. Had HD-DVD been compatible with the PS3 or XBox, we probably wouldn't be talking about Blu-Ray.

(That theory was also explained in Tropic Thunder, but it is generally accepted as fact)

message 12: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) You sneaked that one in there, Gus, as I was typing.

You actually could record longer on Beta if you set it up that way. But yeah, I can see how the porn folks would have that kind of influence at the time.

I paid over $700 for my first Beta machine in '79. I think I had the first one in Albany county! Believe it or not I sold it for almost as much with an ad in the paper.

Julie | 568 comments It's funny how much influence the porn industry has.

I wonder what the latest figures are for Internet traffic, as far as percentage of porn. I bet it's pretty high.

Not that I would know ... or anything.
