Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments And here is week 7 with 'Emma' by Jane Austen.

Since it was seemingly quite a challenge to chose just one of Austen's novels Robert McCrum gives three reasons for his decision:

"First, it's my personal favourite, a mature and brilliant comedy of manners (and much more besides) completed towards the end of her life. Second, published by John Murray, Emma takes us into a new literary landscape, the beginnings of a book world that lingers unto the 21st century. And third, most importantly of all, Austen's last novel has the sparkle of early books such as Pride and Prejudice, mixed with a sharper and deeper sensibility. There's no accounting for taste: I simply prefer it to the others."

Ahhh! I was waiting for her!!!!
Definitly I couldn't live without reading, and rerererereading her novels once in a while ...

Shirley | 4177 comments At last! A book I have read!! Even though it's my least favourite I have read from Jane Austen...

It is my LEAST favourite by her! But I know that it is generally recognized as her masterpiece, along with P&P.

I need to read this. I didn't love P&P but want to give Emma a go. It's on my TBR for next week

Really? I just find Emma so irritating as a character. Much prefer P&P and Sense & Sensibility.

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments I need to read this too: another huge gap in my literary horizon this Jane Austen.

Hmmm, I don't know if I would say it is my least favorite. Perhaps my least favorite of her most famous novels... but I would put it about Northanger Abbey and Mansfield Park, not to mention the lesser known works such as Lady Susan or Sanditon.

I hate to say this, as I am a Jane Austen fan, but if you didn't like P&P you probably won't like Emma either. I agree with Shirley that the character of Emma is pretty annoying.

I probably won't like it but I still feel I should give it a try. I am trying to be open minded and not have a pre conceived idea that i won't love it. I will give up on Austen if I don't like two of her books!

Then I would recommend Persuasion over Emma

Emma is really irritating!!! That's why this is my least favourite: I'm in love with Elisabeth and Darcy and Anne Eliot and Frederick Wentworth. Also Marianne Dashwood is "a bit of a bore", don't you think?

That's going to be my next Jane Austen read...

Thanks for the recommendation, Leslie. I will certainly add Persuasion to the list and get to it next year

Definitly one of Austen best novel!
As a teenager I used to go around with Major Wentworth's letter in my purse!!!!

I was given this book several years ago now by my grandma, and have seen parts of the movie. Of all the Jane Austen novels, this one seems to have the worst reviews. My sister is a huge Austen fan, but disliked "Emma" strongly. As a result, I am sort of hesitant to read it.

Usually it is considered one of her best! Bu it is the same with me Maggie: one of the least favourite of my favourite author

While I think that Emma is a bit of a twit, this book is still worth reading imo. Give it a try!

Robin P No accounting for tastes -Emma is my favorite Austen. I find Emma adorable even when she is being obnoxious - she is very young. It might help that I first read it on my own rather than in a class which put a damper on P&P for me. My least favorite is definitely Mansfield Park - no humor and that heroine is such a wimp. Emma is many things but not a wimp!
