message 1: by Mandy Sue (new)

Mandy Sue (mettakaruna) | 811 comments I know...totally off topic from books but really. Which five actors do you think are the greatest of all time?? My hubby and me love discussing this.

message 2: by Lisa (new)

Lisa My five: Laurence Olivier, Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, Gene Hackman and Peter O'Toole. That's my quick off the top of my head list. Five minutes from now it might be different! Because this list doesn't include Paul Newman, Morgan Freeman, Kenneth Branagh, or Orson Welles.

ohhh good question. Five best or five favorite? Because two totally different lists.
Best I would say Paul Newman, Johnny Depp, Jimmy Stewart, Denzel Washington, Maybe Henry Fonda or Dustin Hoffman

message 4: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (SarahSaysRead) Well, I'm sure this isn't a "greatest of all time" list, but here's my 5 favorite:

Will Smith
Johnny Depp
Adam Sandler
Morgan Freeman

Hmmm...5th is a tough one. I guess I'll leave my 5th spot open in case I'm forgetting someone brilliant, but I just seem to be thinking of all the hilarious, fairly new actors I've seen lately. Maybe Steve Carrell? (I don't even think I spelled that right...)

Katie (cowgirl-up) | 319 comments Great question!

Humphrey Bogart
Cary Grant
Jimmy Stewart
Marlon Brando
Dustin Hoffman

I'm a sucker for Old Hollywood so my list is a bit biased. Newer movies and actors just don't do it for me the way those oldies, but goodies do. They were just so...suave. *swoon*

Christy (TheReaderBee) (thereaderbee) | 193 comments Ohhh great question!

Johnny Depp - Always #1 for me!
John Cusack
Tom Hamks
Steve Martin
Branden Frasier

Can you tell I'm a comedy type of person? lol

message 7: by Mandy Sue (new)

Mandy Sue (mettakaruna) | 811 comments Tera ~ It was a best 5. But a best 5 and favorite 5 work too.

My Best 5...
1. Anthony Hopkins
2. Jack Nicholson
3. Al Pacino
4. Morgan Freeman
5. Tom Hanks or Gene Hackman (It's a tie)

My favorite 5....
1. Adam Sandler (I am in love with him)
2. Clint Eastwood (again, I am in love with him)
3. Anthony Hopkins (am I the only one who finds him sexy...even though he's ancient?)
4. Edward Norton (yummmers!)
5. Jason Statham (seriously, he looks exactly identical to my husband otherwise, Morgan Freeman would be in this spot)

Shelby *trains flying monkeys* Oh fun!
Mine are
1. Jack Nicholson. Ok so I have the hots for him
2. Morgan Freeman.
3. Tom Hanks
4. Denzel Washington. Hots for him too
5. George Clooney. Yep him too

I'm with you on the old timers. Cary Grant is my all-time favorite actor!

message 11: by Mandy Sue (new)

Mandy Sue (mettakaruna) | 811 comments Lisa ~ Yeah he does except he's 2 inches shorter and without the yummylicious accent. My stepson saw The Transporter and thought it was his Daddy in the movie. LOL

Katie!

I couldn't agree with you more! I adore classic movies, give me an oldie any day! Your list is pretty darn close to my own. I just love watching Marlon Brando in On the Waterfront, he gives me goosebumps! :)

I think I would have to include Paul Newman in my top five, though, as well as Sidney Poitier.

message 13: by Holli (new)

Holli I think mine are:

1. Anthony Hopkins
2. Robert DeNiro
3. Johnny Depp
4. Jack Nicholson
5. Tom Hanks

Not necessarily my faves but my top 5 best anyway....

message 14: by Dolly (last edited Jun 11, 2009 11:36AM) (new)

Dolly (DollyA) Interesting that Johnny Depp is so popular among everyone, I agree, he is one of my favorites along with Tom Hanks. I also liked Christian Bale in a few of his movies. I also liked Heath Ledger in The Patriot.

Two different ones I haven't seen mentioned above. For his role in "Dr. Who", David Tennant. He does a great job with that one. The second is Lee Pace in "Pushing Daisies".

Ahh--I'm so mad that they cancelled "Pushing Daisies!"

message 16: by Dolly (new)

Dolly (DollyA) I loved that show too, then I haven't gotten to see the final episodes. I heard at least one of them was aired, but never heard exactly when...

message 17: by Holli (new)

Holli Saturday nights Dolly at 10pm I think

message 18: by Dolly (last edited Jun 11, 2009 12:03PM) (new)

Dolly (DollyA) Thanks Holli. I'll have to check to see if it is on here then. I've been waiting on the DVD set to come out.

message 19: by Mandee (new)

Mandee (amandalinajanel) | 69 comments Also at abc.com ...the last three episodes are available for a little while, I think. I loved the artistic feel, and the humor and sweetness of that show! I was a little heart broken when they cancelled it... Lee Pace's character was adorable...

message 20: by Katie (last edited Jun 11, 2009 08:11PM) (new)

Katie Flora Wilkins (Kflora) Sean Penn!!!!, need I say more
Johnny Depp, as mentioned so much before
Tom Hanks, he's great even in bad movies
Leonardo DiCaprio, I've watched him grow up
Robert Redford, he's great even in his golden years
Clive Owen, I just like to look at him
Russell Crowe, controversial, but always gives a great performance
Heath Ledger, we'll always wonder...

And no explanation needed:
Denzel Washington
Al Pacino
Robert DeNiro
Morgan Freeman
Sidney Poitier

message 21: by Lisa (new)

Lisa See, see what I meant! All of these great actors I left off--Sean Penn, Tom Hanks, Redford, Crowe, Ledger, Denzel, Poitier.

message 22: by Lori (last edited Jun 12, 2009 05:23AM) (new)

Lori | 617 comments I have to go with several of the classics on this one:

Clark Gable (he's called the King of Hollywood for a reason!)
Gregory Peck
Paul Newman
Humphrey Bogart
William Holden
James Stewart

message 23: by Dolly (last edited Jun 12, 2009 07:01AM) (new)

Dolly (DollyA) Russell Crowe does give good performances, I have to agree with that one too. :) So many good ones aren't there?

Surely not Javier Bardem when he is in character in No Country for Old Men, you don't have a thing for the 70's do, do you? Actually, I agree he is a really good actor :)

Steve McQueen was cool too, loved Bullitt.
